Second Harvest Food Bank appeal

So proclaims the billboard that grabbed my attention last week while driving down Highway 101 from San Francisco to Palo Alto. And the postcard in my office mailbox today. It's a refrain that's hard to ignore.

The need in our seemingly wealthy communities of the Mid-peninsula and Silicon Valley is great.

Hunger in San Mateo and Santa Clara CountiesDid you know that 1 in 10 people in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties receive food aid from Second Harvest Food Bank? I didn't. I had no idea the need was so acute!

Luckily our area also has many generous people who care and have the resources to try to alleviate the hunger. Food barrels are going in many businesses around our towns, and I'm happy to say that my office, Today Sotheby's International Realty, once again has barrels in the lobby, awaiting donations.

Today Sotheby's International RealtyWe're easy to find. Sotheby's International Realty is located at 1250 San Carlos Avenue, Suite 101, in downtown San Carlos. (Corner of San Carlos Avenue and Walnut Street.)

Why not pick up some extra canned goods on your next shopping trip and drop them off at our office? If it's easier for you, call, text or email me and I'll pick them up from your San Carlos, Belmont or Redwood City home.

Please bring non-perishables, not in glass bottles. Especially suitable are:

  • Tuna, canned meats
  • Meals in a can (stew, chili, soup)
  • Peanut butter
  • Low-sugar cereal
  • 100% fruit juices
  • Canned fruit, packed in juice
  • Canned vegetables
  • Cans with pop-top lids

Second Harvest Food Bank collection barrelsLet's fill those barrels, shall we?

I'd love to see our hallway overflowing with bags of cans!

I'd love to take a picture of this year's barrels overflowing with food. I promise to share it with you all.

We can make a real difference in our community!

Living in San Francisco - A November Sunday - 11/13/11

Today the weather was gorgeous, my listings are all sold or pending so it was time to spend the day with my husband.

We took a fast-paced walk down Jackson Street in San Francisco, through Chinatown and the Financial District, about 1.8 miles to the Ferry Building. We enjoyed a 30-minute or so ferry ride to the town (and island) of Alameda, just off the Oakland shore, near Jack London Square. Once there, we walked around the former Naval Air Station, and toured the USS Hornet, the aircraft carrier which is now a museum. Amazing how large it is!

After a fast-paced walk to get a deli sandwich, we high tailed it back to the ferry dock (with 4 minutes to spare!)

Russian HillOur return walk took us to see 6 open houses (what else does a Realtor® do on a Sunday off?) in the Russian Hill area of San Francisco. You can bet we climbed many hills and staircases, both inside and outside of homes.

All in all, a perfect day! We hiked around 10 miles, enjoyed new sights, yummy food, good time together, and I continued my education of the condo market (and one fantastic single-family home) in San Francisco.

Whether you live in San Francisco, San Mateo County or the Silicon Valley, why not spread your wings a bit and take in a new day's adventure?

Living in San Francisco - A November Sunday

November view from our condoThere's always an adventure to be had, something special to enjoy here in San Francisco. Today is no exception, with free time until 1:00 PM, when paperwork chores must get started.

detail, corner of SF City HallAfter a cup of French Roast coffee while surfing the web, we breakfasted on a delicious mushroom omelette, courtesy of my husband, Gene. Then we walked the 1.3 miles to City Hall.

Farmers' Market near City Hall, SFI took advantage of early voting (election day is this coming Tuesday), then enjoyed shopping at the "Heart of the City" farmers' market at International Plaza.

anthuriumBy Noon we were back home, with a kitchen full of fresh vegetables, a variety of mushrooms, some freshly packaged trail mix, a piece of salmon, apples -- even a potted anthurium to brighten up the condo.

Refreshed and nicely exercised, it's time to whip out the work while a nice pot of bean-barley soup simmers on the stove, and vegetables roast in the oven. My kind of November Sunday in San Francisco.

One of my favorite tasks leads to one of my least favorite!

pending sale 20 Sequoia Ct San Carlos 94070This week I've gotten to do one of my favorite real estate tasks -- put a "Sale Pending" rider in front of one of my listings.

Of course, this leads directly to one of my least favorite tasks--paperwork.

I've thought about handing off a file to a transaction coordinator or an assistant, but that causes more anxiety since I don't know the status of signatures, who needs what, etc. It also takes me out of the loop with my clients; and I like my clients and want to continue our direct contact.

So, my solution? Find a day when I can hole up in my home office, put background music on to help settle the brain, and just dig in. For the first hour or two chaos reigns; then order settles in.

That was Monday. Yesterday, I was re-energized, ready to move forward. Onward!

"Why is it taking my San Carlos CA house so long to sell?"

To a homeowner with a house on the market, it can feel like it
has been on the market forever. Chances are, if you have priced the home competitively and are marketing it well (condition, ease of showing, networking within the real estate community as well as online) you're close to the average length of time. It just seems like forever when you're waiting.
It can help to see just what's really happening. This first chart shows the average days on market for all single family homes in San Carlos, CA for the last year:
days on market, San Carlos CA 94070
The second chart breaks it down by price, the $800,000-$999,000 range:

This last chart is for properties listed between $1,000-$1,200,000:
