Highway 17N - Oakland Plantation Shopping Center - Nearly Complete

The Oakland Plantation Shopping Center off Highway 17N just passed Highway 41, north of Mount Pleasant is finally coming to completion.Courtyard of shops at New Shopping Complex off Hwy 17N, Mount Pleasant The Oakland Plantation Shopping Center is an $80 million dollar commercial development on the northern edge of the town of Mount Pleasant.

It has benn constructed on 75 acres located at the corner of Porchers Bluff Road and Highway 17N. The remaining 225 acres of the historic Oakland Plantation will be set aside as a conservation easement.

The Oak Plantation shopping center will have much the same feel has the current Towne Center shopping center in central Mount Pleasant with it's streets, trees and decorative lighting.

Super Wal-mart, Kolhs and a Wachovia Branch Bank have been open for business for several months already.

Now the rest of the shop units are either awaiting tenants or are being shop fitted at present.

There looks to be a mix of the usual food and retail stores that have already committed to open.

This new shopping complex is primarily going to servive communities off Hwy 17 and Hwy 41 like Dunes West, Park, West, Rivertowne, Planters Pointe, Ivy Hall and Charleston National to name but a few.

It paves the way for further development along Highway 17N and for the completeion of the development around the New Wando High school which has been teaching the local children for the last 4 years.

Hands up-holding Sweetgrass Basket, New Shopping Complex, Hwy 17N, Mount Pleasant

In the center grassed area of the courtyard inspired section of this new development is a statue celebrating the production of Sweetgrass baskets.

This is something the local Gullah community has produced and sold for years, many of these can still be seen being sold along the Hwy 17 corridor and in the market place in Downtown Charleston.

The art, craft and skills involded in producing these baskets are passed from generation to generation and date back to pre slavery, to there origins in Africa.

New Stop Light - Traffic Warning

For those of you who travel the area frequently, you will have noticed that a new Stop Light has been installed at the intersection of Clements Ferry Road and Cainhoy Road, Berkeley County.

This is an improvement to the junction of these roads, especially if you are turning from Cainhoy Road on to Clements ferry Road towards Mount Pleasant. The reasoning behind it, I'm not sure. There have been a few accidents at that spot and there is more traffic coming down Cainhoy Road with the addition of new subdivisions like Brightwood Plantation.

The thing that I have found strange about this new Stop Light, which as from today is fully functional, is this.

I saw the workmen put in the Stop Lights, I have seen them hanging there for a couple of weeks, I even noticed when they were a flashing yellow signal.

So why oh why do I not see them when they are RED.

No crash or No accident or No jumping a red light, just some hard braking. Luckily no one was following me.

So my message is, even if you know it's there still be careful!
