Market Day in Payson, AZ

Ahh, the last warm days! Come out and enjoy them at the last community Flea Market of the year. It is held at the Presbyterian Church parking lot on West Main Street, Saturday the 17th from 8 am till noon.

baked goods at Payson MarketYou never know what you may find. In addition to second hand items, there are often various crafts, some real antiques; and at this one I think there will probably be some Farmer's Market vendors since the Market closed the end of September. You might look for some baked goods and jams and jellies.

Payson weather is gorgeous just now. Nights are chilly, so mornings are cool. I figure by noon it will be around 80, though.

I'm planning on coming to sell tomato preserves (the last of my harvest) and maybe some herbs and flowers. I will also be clearancing some candles left from a craft show. I garden and craft for fun sometimes, to get a break from the RE office.

Come on out and enjoy. You might find a treasure!

Change of the seasons- goodbye to my tomatoes. Gardening in Payson.

I love to garden! When we moved to Payson I was so excited- a four season climate! Reasonable temperature summers! I can garden!

Well, yes, Payson has nice daytime temperatures in the Summer, but the nightimes can be down in the low 50s. And we can have storms with high winds and hail. We can have Spring snows and Fall heat. Fruit trees bloom in the Spring and a frost knocks down all the buds. A Fall frost knocks out flowers, and then it gets warm again.

For help with gardening in the Payson area I recommend the local gardening clubs. High Country Gardening Club has a website, as does Rim Area Gardeners. Or contact Plant Fair Nursery in Star Valley. They are very knowledgeable and helpful.

tomato vines in Payson, AZAlas- I pulled my tomato vines last weekend I hated to do it, but twice it got much colder in my backyard than was forecast, and some of the vines froze. Payson is notorious for a killing frost followed by Indian Summer, but I didn't want to have to cover and uncover on the colder nights. So I just gave in. Now I have a counter full of green tomatoes, a freezer full of ripe tomato salsa, and am already thinking what to plant next year!

I DID, however, put pansies out front. They can withstand the cold, even snows. I also put in some of the prettier versions of chard, kale, and mustard. I've got to have something to look at in my flower garden! Besides, they are good eating, and can take a lot of cold.

Arizona has a set of rental laws, do you know where to find them?

By law, when we sign a lease with a tenant, we have to tell them where to find the Arizona Landlord and Tenant Act. We prefer to just give them a copy, even though it is 20some pages and expensive to have copied. We feel we are educating people by doing so.

So many people are SO confused about the law. Tenants think they can just withhold the rent if the Landlord does something wrong or doesn't fix something they want done. WRONG! Owners think they can put anything they want into a lease. WRONG! Tenants think they can give 30 days notice to move, starting anytime of the month. WRONG! Owners think they can just show up at a property anytime they want. WRONG!

Here is a link to Arizona's laws governing rentals, in pdf format.

If your state has something similar, post the link. This would be a good resource.

the Rim Road, in Northern Az. A favorite Fall drive.

I try to make sure that, at least once during the Fall season, we drive the Rim Road. This is a Forest Service road (#300) that goes from Hwy 87 above Strawberry to Hwy 260 near Woods Canyon Lake.
The road starts out in forest, tall Ponderosa pines, with Oak that turn nice yellows and golds. There are spots along where one gets glimpses of reds and oranges where there are pockets of other tree types. The road then winds closer to the edge of the Mogollan Rim. At spots, it also passes through areas of past forest fires.
view from the Mogollan Rim, Arizona

This picture is the view from an outlook point. The day I took it the wind was blowing like a son-of-a-gun! Even on a calm day the wind pours up the side of the Rim, but this day I could hardly stand against it.
Depending on the light and the lookout point one can see many, many layers of mountains. From over near Hwy 260 one can even see the top of Superstition Mountain, down near Phoenix. It's like being on top of the world!

The map below follows the Rim Road. I added the blue line to make it a little easier to see. (Use the "hand" to move it down a touch- for some reason it isn't centered). Try looking at it in the "terrain" version.

The road IS dirt, and can be rough. You don't need 4 wheel drive, but you DO need something with some ground clearance that can take the bumps.
