Ice Garden in La Quinta

A new ice skating rink is coming to La Quinta! I saw the banner on Highway 111 and Dune Palms Road in the La Quinta Valley Plaza (79-430 Highway Ice Garden in La Quinta111) and drove in to see where it is being built. I love to ice skate, having spent part of my childhood in Chicago ice skating on the Des Plaines River while my brothers played hockey nearby.

The La Quinta Ice Garden rink will have an 11,000 square foot ice surface in a 15,400Ice Garden in La Quinta square foot facility. Gary Steven, the owner, also a La Quinta resident, is quoted as saying the rink will be ready for the start of the hockey season in mid-September. Steven said he expects to have about 2,000 skaters visit each week, or 100,000 a year. The ice rink is scheduled to include a speaker system, laser lights, disco ball, locker room, snack bar and an area to hold birthday parties and will hold 125 skaters. Griffin Ranch - Merv Griffin's Equestrian Community in South La Quinta

Merv_Griffin_ShowI loved growing up watching Merv Griffin on his talk show from 1962 - 1986. I found his interview style to be warm, friendly, informative and his humor contagious. I was fortunate enough to see him at several of the annual La Quinta Art Festivals, which he sponsored over the years, prior to his death in August 2007. He is missed, but his legacy lives on with his shows, his family, and his dream of an equestrian development in La Quinta, aptly named "Griffin Ranch".

Merv Griffin is missed... but his vision, enthusiasm for life and humor will be remembered. Below is his headstone at his gravesite in Los Angeles stating (in words he chose)... "I will not be right back after this message."
