Mama Bear Papa Bear Baby Bear - Whose Been Sighted in Your Yard?

Mama Bear Papa Bear Baby Bear - Whose Been Sighted in Your Yard?

Female "mother" Black Bear .........3

I received an email today that was sent out by the Town of Ramapo, NY to alert residents about bears that were sighted in the neighborhood and what to do in case you see one. Of coarse I thought nothing much of it, until I happened home at around 4:00 this afternoon and saw several police cars in my neighbors drive.

Thinking it might be an emergency situation with her family, I headed there to see if there was anything I could do to help, just to find the officers making their way from her yard to mine with rifles in hand.

It seems that the bear was sighted in the wooded area behind my home and they were there to try and get it. Of coarse, all they can do is hit it with pellets to encourage the bear to leave the area and seek greener pastures. Unless they can get the bear trapped in a tree, the DEC will not trap it and physically remove it.

So, fellow Town of Ramapo residents and fellow Rocklanders, read the info below so that just in case its you that meets up with a bear or sights one, you'll know just what to do and more importantly, what not to do.

Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence's office is advising that residents do the following:

1)If you see the bear, call the Ramapo Police Department (357-2400) or Ramapo Animal Control Officer (Cathy McGrath 222-8449) immediately.

DO NOT APPROACH THE BEAR

2)The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regulates the removal of Black Bears from all venues in New York State. During normal business hours 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM call the Wildlife Regional Office (845) 256-3098 or during off-duty hours 4:00 PM - 8:00 AM call 1-877-457-5680 to report a sighting and/or an emergency situation (after calling the local Police).

3)DEC officials will inspect areas in Ramapo where bear sightings have occurred on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. Our Animal Control Officer will lead the inspection tour.

4)The Ramapo Police Department is increasing Police presence in the areas where sightings have occurred, in particular during night time hours.

5)Reminder: Please take down all birdfeeders and cover your garbage cans. These are the two major attractions for black bears.

Jewish Soldier in Blue and Gray - Lafayette Theatre Suffern NY

Jewish Soldier in Blue and Gray - Lafayette Theatre Suffern NY

The Jewish Community Center of Rockland County is hosting its first ever Jewish Cultural Arts Festival. As part of the festival and corresponding with the 150th anniversary of the Civil war, it will be showing the documentary film Jewish Soldiers in Blue and Gray.

Over 10,000 Jews participated in the civil war, whether fighting on the side of the union or as part of the confederates. The film outlines the history of the Jews during the civil war and the sacrifices they made defending their country, whether their allegiance was with the union or the confederacy. It also tells of the little known decision of Ulyssis S. Grant to expel the Jews.
Military historian, Shalom E. Lamm, will be the featured speaker at the event with discussion to follow.
The film will be shown tonight, Thursday November 10 at 7 PM at the Lafayette Theatre in Suffern, NY.
Tickets for the showing are $12 and $9 for students and seniors.

Snow in October? - Town of Ramapo Road Closures as of 10/31/2011

Snow in October? - Town of Ramapo Road Closures as of 10/31/2011

Would you believe snow in October? It seems that fall has bypassed us, or at least that winter has snuck in a quick preview. The prediction of between 5 -9 inches of snow for this weekend was not really taken seriously by too many. After all, we haven't seen snow in October since 1962; to say the least, we were unprepared.

The snow storm that Rockland County experienced this weekend, which left about 6-7 inches of heavy wet snow on the ground, reeked lots of havoc to the county. The trees, still green with leaves un-shed, couldn't withstand the weight of the snow, and fallen limbs and branches were the result, taking with it many of the power lines.

Many of the local streets are still blocked with downed trees and downed electric wires. Thousands are still without power, two days after the storm. The schools have been canceled for today (bet the kids are happy) because school buses can't get through many of the local thoroughfares due to the downed trees and downed wires.

For those of you who plan to be out and about, here's an update on the road closures in the Town of Ramapo as of 10/31/2011:

Highview Road
Brick Church Road
Grove St
Brookside Ave

Brookview @ Carlisle

Carlton @ West Maple
Carlton between Spook Rock and Pine Rd
Hawk Street

If you are one of those without power and are looking for a place to warm up you can take shelter at these warming stations:

The Joseph T. St. Lawrence Center at Torne Valley - open until 10PM tonight

The Ramapo Senior Citizen's Center at 319 Haverstraw Rd in Montebello - open until 3PM today

If you're out and about, be careful, stay warm and most of all, have a safe day!
