Not your typical museum, the famous La Habra Children's Museum is a place to get involved. It's a fun place for kids of all ages, we've been there many times with our family.
Located in Northern Orange County and housed in the former Union Pacific depot, the building was donated to the city in 1956. After setting vacant for years and the dedication of hard work of many local residents the Children's Museum has become special place of interest in the city. Not your typical museum, this is a "touchy-feely" kind of place where kid's become involved themselves with hands-on exhibits of all types for all ages.
There is so much to see and do at this fun place, complete with a merry-go-round and everything is totally hands-on. It's also a place for youngsters to learn valuable life lessons in "Ocean Adventures" on things like ecology with an under the sea exhibit. Then there's archeology by digging for fossils, uncovering more treasures, in another adventure.
The Orange County Transit District (OCTD) has contributed an actual bus for display (now cut down) for drivers who may want to get behind the wheel and take it for a spin. The kids love it!
In addition there's real live performing stage in the middle of another gallery, kids dress up in a wide variety of costumes complete with hats and accessories. The scenery on the "stage" takes on a different appearance for all to see with budding directors at the controls in the nearby lighting booth. Kids can spend hours in this one exhibit alone.
For the museum's youngest visitors, kids five and under, there's a special gallery, an exhibit just for this special age group. They can play with multiple fun things available for just the little ones.
The nearby train, a 1923 caboose (still on the tracks, right next door to the Depot Theater) offers a look back to earlier days of the railroad coming from Los Angeles into Orange County including stops at La Habra and ending in Yorba Linda. This exhibit is open at selected times for museum. I can tell you personally the kids crawl into almost every nook and cranny of this rail car.
The La Habra Children's Museum is located in Portola Park at 301 South Euclid, La Habra 90631 next door to the La Habra Depot Theater and the La Habra Tennis Center. The area is just South of La Habra Blvd. and North of Lambert Rd in the heart of La Habra.
