Atlanta BeltLine URBAN ADVENTURE DREAM COMING TRUE CHECK IT OUT (Part 2 of 3)
In the first part, we learned that The Atlanta BeltLine runs through 45 of Atlanta's intown neighborhoods. As it continues around the City, the Atlanta BeltLine passes through areas that are developed at a high level and others whose development could use a boost. The Atlanta BeltLine is composed of two sections: The Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. and The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership. Each has a separate mission to accomplish. ABI executes and implements the project and ABLP handles fundraising and community issues.
One of the most interesting parts of the Atlanta BeltLine Urban Adventure Dream Coming True is the Bellwood Quarry.
Almost five years ago, The City of Atlanta purchased 137 acres of land to create the future greenspace and reservoir. Eventually, connected to Maddox Park, the new Westside Park will encompass approximately 300 acres and include a new reservoir for the Atlanta area. Westside Park will be larger than Piedmont Park (185 acres) and Grant Park (131 acres) when finished.
The old quarry, in use for over 100 years, and most recently for shooting movies, will be cleaned, prepared and readied to accommodate 1.9 billion gallons of drinking water! The current reservoir is estimated to be an eight day supply and the new one would be 32 days supply of water. WOW!
The Westside Park will provide recreational areas for Atlanta and Fulton County residents and visitors when completed. The central motif for the Atlanta BeltLine Urban Adventure Dream Coming True is the integration of new development along the BeltLine. Connections along the corridor being revamped to serve as the BeltLine is key to its success.
From a City of Atlanta Press release on June 30, 2006:
"To be implemented by the Atlanta Development Authority, the BeltLine is one of the most comprehensive economic development efforts undertaken in the City’s history. The initiative, which involves 22 miles of legacy railroad right-of-way that passes through 45 intown Atlanta neighborhoods, seeks to transform transit, grow greenspace with parks and trails, and ensure livable communities and an attractive business climate in the City over the next quarter century. Economic development, affordable workforce housing, pedestrian mobility, historic preservation, environmental remediation and public art are among the BeltLine’s many visionary components."

Currently, an estimated $2.8 billion project the those funds, $1.3 billion of private development in 40 different areas funds projects underway.
The Atlanta BeltLine runs through 45 of Atlanta's intown neighborhoods.
The Atlanta BeltLine Urban Adventure Dream Coming True relies on the Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (or ABI) to plan and execute the implementation of the BeltLine in partnership with the BeltLine team which includes City of Atlanta departments."Its functions include specifically defining the BeltLine plan; leading efforts to secure federal, state and local funding; continuing the BeltLine community engagement process; and serving as the overall project management office to execute the BeltLine plan, including the coordination of planning and execution activities with other City of Atlanta departments and managing all vendors and suppliers. Atlanta BeltLine Inc. is also responsible for tracking and reporting progress on the BeltLine to the Atlanta City Council, Atlanta Public Schools and Fulton County, the three taxing authorities that authorized the BeltLine TAD legislation in 2005."
The Atlanta BeltLine Urban Adventure Dream Coming True relies on the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership (or ABLP), which is a non-profit organization, to raise funds from "private and philanthropic sources to support the BeltLine; working with neighborhoods, community organizations, faith organizations, businesses and other groups to raise general awareness and broad-based support for the BeltLine, and [to serve] as a catalyst to mobilize resources to address the social concerns raised by new development around the BeltLine."
