The news reports from several sources stated that the New Zealand police seized millions of dollars worth of assets from the MEGAUPLOAD group. These included “luxury cars such as a Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe”. In addition, the police seized more than $8 million (NZ$10 million) from financial institutions.

At times, life needs to be looked at in perspective. Share part of these videos that inspire kind thoughts as you admire the majesty of the world in which we live.
A hearty thank-you to Mike Cooper, Winchester, Virginia for directing my thoughts toward this subject tonight. And, of course, to ActiveRain University teachers - where would I be without their lessons? Certainly not adding HTML code!
Have a happy day -

SOPA and PIPA OPPOSITION
FOCUS ON THE SIDE EFFECTS
Atlanta Metro ODAT Realty CDPE Advanced Buy Lease Sell Buckhead Atlanta GA
I try not to watch TV news because it is generally both negative and slanted. However, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as I walked in the airport corridors on my travels, there was no way to avoid the TV at the gate areas.
My issues with SOPA and PIPA were not addressed in the news reports and interviews. My observations of SOPA and PIPA focus on the side effects. The side effects are many but the two to review here are "deep packet" and "guilty until proven innocent" - both are antithetical to the founding principles of our country.
As a REALTOR(R) in 2012, I am dependent on the internet. "No two ways about it" as my older relatives used to say. I don't want my accidental search of a site to put me in a group of sites being investigated. And shut down until proven innocent - unAmerican!
"In practice the presumption of innocence is animated by the requirement that the government prove the charges against the defendant Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. This due process requirement, a fundamental tenet of criminal law, is contained in statutes and judicial opinions. The requirement that a person suspected of a crime be presumed innocent also is mandated in statutes and court opinions.
The two principles go together ..."
My other objection is to "deep packet filtering" as SOPA and PIPA focus on the side effects reveals. To ascertain whether or not I am violating a regulation of SOPA and/or PIPA, my ISP must conduct "deep packet" level filtering. Deep packet filtering is defined by Wikipedia as
"Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) (also called complete packet inspection and Information eXtraction - IX -) is a form of computer network packet filtering that examines the data part (and possibly also the header) of a packet as it passes an inspection point, searching for protocol non-compliance, viruses, spam, intrusions or predefined criteria to decide if the packet can pass or if it needs to be routed to a different destination, or for the purpose of collecting statistical information. There are multiple headers for IP packets, network equipment only needs to use the first of these (the IP header) for normal operation, but use of the second header (TCP, UDP etc.) is normally considered to be shallow packet inspection (usually called Stateful Packet Inspection) despite this definition.[1]
Deep Packet Inspection (and filtering) enables advanced network management, user service, and security functions as well as internet data mining, eavesdropping, and censorship. Although DPI technology has been used for Internet management for many years, some advocates of net neutrality fear that the technology can be used anticompetitively or to reduce the openness of the Internet.[2]
DPI is currently being used by the enterprise, service providers and governments in a wide range of applications."
As Marge Piwowarski commented on my previous post about SOPA and PIPA - "I think we will defeat these two but others will appear to take their place. We need to remain vigilant."
So one bill is postponed and the other is still coming up for a vote in January 2012. Contact your elected officials - the postponment of the Senate bill was directly due to citizen objections.
“We have increasingly heard from a large number of constituents and other stakeholders with vocal concerns about possible unintended consequences of the proposed legislation, including breaches in cybersecurity, damaging the integrity of the Internet, costly and burdensome litigation, and dilution of First Amendment rights,” the senators said in the letter. Signers of the letter include Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Jeff Sessions (R-AL), John Cornyn (R-TX) Mike Lee (R-UT), and Tom Coburn (R-OK). as cited on Yahoo.
The Senate bill Stop Online Piracy Act (S.968) is not up for a vote now. SOPA and PIPA Focus on the side effects. Let's now focus on the House bill Protect Internet Privacy Act (H.R. 3261) and get the vote postponed on that as well.
Voter contact stopped the Senate bill. Don't know how to contact your elected Representatives? Find your House of Representatives contact information here and get in touch today.
