Scituate, MA wants to spend $1.9 million to buy the former Pier 44 restaurant property, which is headed for a foreclosure auction. The issue will be addressed at a special town meeting Monday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Scituate high school gym.
There was an informational meeting about the purchase yesterday at the Scituate library. Many of the approximately 60 residents who attended spoke in favor of buying the former Pier 44 property, which is at 44 Jericho Road.
The property is assessed at $2.57 million and has been the site of several failed development attempts during the past four years.

May is the start of the busiest time of year for moving companies. Make sure you hire a reputable company.
If you're packing up your home anytime soon, you may want to consider a few tips, courtesy of the BBB, to make sure that your moving company is trustworthy:
Research the company thoroughly: Interstate movers must be licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration; they are assigned a motor carrier number that you can verify at www.protectyourmove.gov. Also, you can check with the BBB, which maintains more than 17,000 reliability reports on various movers.
Other potential sources of information include Attorney General Martha Coakley's office, the state Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Get at least three in-home estimates: Legitimate movers typically do not offer to give you a firm estimate online or over the phone. Keep in mind that the lowest estimate might not be the best - it could be an unrealistic lowball offer that could end up costing you more money in the end.
Know your rights: Research your rights as a consumer in your home state and, if you are moving out-of-state, your new state as well. More information can be found at www.moving.org, the web site run by the American Moving & Storage Association.
I was pleased to read in yesterday's Patriot Ledger that a tree in front of Quincy City Hall has been adorned with yellow ribbons bearing the names and ranks of members of a National Guard battalion based at a Quincy armory.
The family support group for the 186th G Company Basic Support Battalion hung the ribbons on May 2 in Quincy. Members of the 186th were recently deployed to Camp Phoenix and Camp Dubs near Kabul, Afghanistan.
The 70 weatherproof yellow ribbons will hang on the tree until the soldiers return home.
"It is a simple but poignant way of showing our support to the soldiers and families," said City Councilor Kevin Coughlin.
The city councils of Quincy and Boston passed resolutions this year declaring the first Sunday in May "Yellow Ribbon Sunday" in honor of citizen soldiers deployed in Afghanistan.
Next time you are at City Hall, take a look at the beautiful tree.
While the South Shore real estate market has been revitalized in recent months, foreclosures are still occurring. What is a foreclosure? When a homeowner doesn't make the mortgage payments over a period of time, the lender can begin a legal process to take possession of or sell the home to recover money owed on the defaulted loan.
Massachusetts residential foreclosures in March hit their highest level since May 2008. Since the start of the year, foreclosures are running 25 percent ahead of 2009.
