The Florida Keys are full of varied wildlife. You will see many wild birds here like Pelicans, Osprey, Kestrel, Owls, and doves to name a few. With so many birds it's not suprising there will be many that are injured and in need of help. That's where the Marathon Wild Bird Center comes into play.
Thursday night I was walking out to put my dinner on the grill when I see a bedraggled little baby bird chirping for it's life. It was clearly distressed and in need of help. So I called the number in the phone book for the Wild Brid Center thinking I would get a machine but a nice lady answers. I tell her about the bird and she asks me where I am, I tell her Bonefish Towers, and amazingly she is right down the street working on something else but says she will come shortly. And sure enough, true to her word she arrives in less than 10 minutes. Which is a good thing because by now the no see um's are eating me alive and I have to keep dancing around this baby bird that seems to like pecking at my turquoise colored flip flops. Kelly Ginter arrives, knows right away the baby is a distressed pigeon, I can't believe I save a pigeon, and offers to take and rehabilitate him.
I went on their site to check them out and they are a fantastic organization located right here in Marathon. If you would like to visit them or make a donation they can be reached on their website.
By the way, according to their site it is illegal to keep a wild bird do I strongly suggest if you find an injured bird while on vacation in Marathon, Florida Keys you call the professionals and let them nurse it back to health.

Florida Keys Diving Enthusiasts get New Thrill
Second largest intentional Reef in Florida Keys
This Wednesday the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, a massive, 523 foot World War II ship will be sunk in 140 feet of water 7 miles off shore from Key West Florida.
Fishing and diving are two of the most popular reasons tourists come to enjoy the Florida Keys and this will add another reason to come and visit.
According to the AP story the sinking on Wednesday will only take 3 minutes but should provide some interesting entertainment. How often do you get to see a war ship sink?
