Tomball Business and Professional Women hold a Ways and Means committee retreat every July at one of our members beach house in Galveston. Our member was fortunate in that her house remained intact. Everything below the house blew out. She said when she came back it was so clean it looked as though it had been swept with a broom. She did have a baby sting ray swimming in the pool. It unfortunately ended up being a casualty also.
She is doing a wonderful job getting her house back in order but as you can see from the pictures her neighbors house did not fare as well. These pictures give a visual representation of the devastation that Hurricane Ike caused to Galveston Island.

I grew up in Tornado country not Hurricane country but the way this picked and chose it reminds me of the devastation after a tornado.
Mel's Country Cafe is in Tomball TX. This is the second time I have written a post about Mel's but some things are just SO GOOD they are worth posting on more than once. That would be Mel's Country Cafe!
Mel's is on the outskirts of Tomball on Stanolind Rd. It is on a country road that I use as a short cut over to Tomball so I drive by quite often. It is amazing no matter what time of the day you drive by it is ALWAYS busy. I have learned to slow down as I drive by as there are so many trucks I'm always afraid a car will be hidden behind one and not see me. The picture to the left was taken about 3:30 PM on a Sunday afternoon. I wrote this prior to going to take the picture so this just validates my point.
Mels Country Cafe is nothing in the looks department but the food is GREAT and the help are Texas friendly. This restaurant is all about good old country cooking. Lunch time is normally packed as it is a quick place to get a home cooked meal at a reasonable price in a
short amount of time. They have a steam table with 3 different daily lunch specials, Tuesday through Friday. The prices are reasonable; the steam table is $7.00 and that includes your meat and two sides along with your drink. Our daughter's favorite day is Tuesday as that is chicken and dumpling day. Our daughter commutes and is here on an occasional basis (with no rhyme or reason) but if she happens to be here on a Tuesday you can bet she will be on her way to Mel's. If I can't go with her she drives over and gets her meal to go.
As you come in you will probably wonder what all the names on the wall are about. That would have to do with the Mel's Mega 
Burger. If you can eat the Mega Mel Burger within 2 hours your name goes on Mel's Mega wall of fame. The burger contains 1½ pounds of ground beef, 1 pound of bacon, and a ¼ pound of American cheese. Personally I have never seen anyone eat the Mega Burger but I had some friends who moved here and the first time they visited they saw someone eat the mega burger within the time frame. Note that someone ate it in 9 minutes. Mel's has all different sizes of hamburgers ranging in price from $2.95 to the Mega Mel Burger at $15.95. I have trouble finishing the smallest size hamburger so I can't even fathom eating the Mega Burger.
Within the last couple of years Mel's started opening on Sundays and are now closed on Mondays. It is always so strange to drive by on a Monday and see an empty lot as that is the ONLY TIME I see an empty parking lot. Evenings are busy also. I called in an order for pick up recently and noticed they had a waiting line. They are known for their catfish and chicken fried steak. Friday evening is all you can
eat catfish and pop corn shrimp.
My parents love Mel's Country Café. They fly in to visit us once or twice a year and prior to their visit my Mother is making arrangements to visit Mel's. The owner was gracious enough to tell her how he made his cabbage. He was gracious on three different visits as she would forget and have to ask him again. The third time she finally wrote it down.
To find Mel's take FM 2920 to the east of Tomball. Go north on FM 2978 and then make a left on Hufsmith. Take a right on Stanolind Rd.; go over the railroad tracks and you will see it on your right hand side. You won't be able to miss it you will see all the cars and trucks (well mainly trucks) lined up in front and over to the side.

Village Automotive in Spring TX is located on Kuykendahl where Spring meets the new Creekside Village of The Woodlands. The owners Christy and Tony Moore are Woodlands residents and their goal is to serve the local community. They do this bringing a quality and excellence that is rarely seen in the automotive industry. Tony has been in the automotive industry for over 15 years and they have been in this location for a little over 2 years.
They are a full service automotive shop. They do Inspections, oil changes, engine over hauls, transmission fluid exchange etc. Basically they do everything but body work. Village Automotive has a team of certified technicians who have the knowledge, technical skill and experience 
to keep your vehicle running. Their technicians can work on import and domestic vehicles, including cars and light trucks. They have worked on everything from Chevrolets and Hyundai's to Lamborghini's and Rolls Royce's.
They also can provide service for extended warranties. I had always thought when you bought an extended wa
rranty you had to go through the dealer but that is not the case.
Here in this northern area of Spring we have not had many amenities so we were thrilled to see Village Automotive open. One of the automotive services that I have enjoyed is their free customer shuttle. I can drop my car off for an oil change or state inspection and they will bring me back to my home office. When my car is finished they give me a call and pick me back up. What a time saver that has been for me. No longer do I have to sit in sterile waiting rooms waiting for my car to be ready. Although if you have noticed the pictures that I have posted; their waiting room is far from sterile.
Christy runs a faux painting business from an office upstairs and she had a hand in creating this beautiful office. It is unlike any automotive shop I have ever seen. One of the things I love about living in Spring TX are the wonderful day trips you can take. Our daughter recently took a trip with her photogrpahy club to Brazos Bend State Park and after seeing her pictures we had to visit. It is quite INCREDIBLE!! I had NO IDEA that we had alligators living so close to us (this was only a little over an hour from our house). For the most part the alligators were being very lazy as it was a very hot day. We will need to go back when it cools down a bit so we can maybe see more activity.
The pictures in the slide show are taken by our daughter as our camera lens is in being repaired. I may be a proud Mom but I think she takes some incredible pictures!

For a VERY HOT July evening (we have been beating heat records in Houston) we had somewhere between 3500 to 5000 people show up for our North Houston - The Woodlands July 2nd Independence Tea Party. We had to change the venue from our Tax Day Tea Party as we were so successful with that tea party we had to find a new place to go. We ended up at the Lonestar Expo Center in Conroe TX. It ran from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and we had a fun educational evening. It was again a peaceful gathering to unite our voices and express our love for this great nation we live in. We had speakers such as our own local Jim "Mattress Mac" McIngvale, Joe "the Plumber"Wurzelbacher and a surprise visit from General Patton.
I'm not for sure on this but it is my understanding that our next Tea Party will be on September 12th, 2009. If you would like to get involved or just find out more about the North Houston Tea Party please visit their website at www.thewoodlandsteaparty.org.

Spring Texas real estate is plentiful with new custom homes, new builder homes, and resale homes available. Housing Prices Range from $70,000 to over $1,000,000. Homes on land are getting a little harder to find but there are still some properties available where you can get small acreage sites with a home. Spring is an easy commute in to Houston. It is also very assessible to all the amenities of The Woodlands..
Spring Texas covers a large geographic area located along I-45, about 20 miles north of Houston. Most of Spring is in unincorporated Northwest Harris County but part of Spring extends in to unincorporated Montgomery County. Spring" does not have official boundaries since it is not incorporated; there is not an actual town of Spring. The area is close enough to Houston to be able to enjoy the amenities but far enough away to still feel like you are in the country. It is very accessible to the amenities of the Woodlands
The Spring area covers three different school districts. To the east of I-45 in Harris county you will find Spring ISD. To the west of I-45 also in Harris county is Klein ISD and to the north in Montgomery county is Conroe ISD.
Golf is big around the Spring area with many golf course communities such as Augusta Pines, Gleannloch Farms
, Windrose and Northampton to name a few. They all offer exceptional amenities with a variety of lakes, walking paths, aquatic centers, equestrian complexes and community centers.
The area was settled by German immigrants in 1840. The Wunsche family settled in the area and began farming the land. The area had a tremendous growth after the railroad was built through the town in 1871. The town served as a railroad center in the early 1900's. You can visit the Spring Texas Historical Museum to find out a more complete history of the area.
Old Town Spring is a restored railroad village of the early 1900s with some 150 shops featuring antiques, arts, crafts, clothing, and restaurants. It is open Tues.-Sat. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sun. noon- 5 p.m. I-45 at Spring Cypress Road, Exit 70A, and one mile east.
The area is booming with many new shopping facilities opening up. A new Wal-mart has been built at the corner of 2920 and Kuykendahl which has made shopping much more accessible for the rural areas of Spring.
Tomball Texas is located approximately 28 miles northwest of Houston along State Highway 249. Unlike most of Northwest Harris County which is unincorporated the city of Tomball is an actual town. The City of Tomball has a local government, city ordinances, public works, city council, community center. The City's slogan is the hometown with a heart and with the warm friendly people they truly are.
With a rich history; the town has been around for over 90 years. It was first a railroad town and then became an oil town. The town was named after State Senator Thomas Henry Ball in 1907. Thomas Ball helped the town get established as a railroad center. Dramatic changes happened back in 1933 when oil hit. A 100-foot gusher totally changed the area attracting hundreds of new people to the community. The city made a deal with Humble Oil and Gas allowing them to drill in the city. As part of the agreement the residents had free oil and gas for 50 years. The town was featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not as being the only city with free gas and water and no cemetery.
Magnolia Texas is located about 45 minutes to an hour from the city. If you are looking for a home on land close to the city this is the place to go. Magnolia TX Real estate is booming with country subdivisions popping up all over the place. All you have to do to enjoy the landscape is look around you will find beautiful forest, rolling hills and much more. The town in the last few years has experienced phenomenal growth.
Horses and Magnolia TX goes together. This is the area where you can find horse property and still be able to commute to the city. The town has several stores that stock feed, supplies, tack, clothing and more. It is not hard to find veterinary services in and around the Magnolia area. If you don't have a horse, no problem, there are plenty of horses for sale around Magnolia. Typically the country subdivisions will allow one horse per acre.
The town of Magnolia is actually very small as you enter the city there is a sign that says population 1,111. Now the market area of Magnolia is HUGE. It extends from FM 2978 to the East of the town of Magnolia clear over to Roberts Cemetery Road on the west side of Magnolia
The Woodlands located along I-45, about 25 miles north of Houston in Montgomery county. The newest village is being built in Harris County just to the south. It is one of the original master planned communities in the nation. From its inception in 1974, the Woodlands have continued its concept of blending nature with today's modern conveniences. This creates a lifestyle unequalled almost anywhere in America. The Woodlands is nestled in 27,000 acres of towering pines, oaks, dogwoods and other assorted vegetation. You sometimes feel like you have to search through the trees to find anything but that is the ambiance of the Woodlands.
Community service organizations organize resident programs such as The Woodlands Watch and they also provide resident forums for community involvement. Some of the community events that are organized include a Fourth of July parade, the First NightTM New Year's Eve celebration, National Night Out, art shows, flea markets, Earth Day, and dozens of other neighbor-to
-neighbor events. The developer is always looking for ways to better the Woodlands, such as giving Free trees away on Arbor Day. Free seeds are made available at the wildflower festival through the Lion's Club. Some other events in the village centers include Pumpkinmania and Halloween costume contests, a Winter Festival, and an annual Heart Walk.
The Woodlands newest village The Village of Creekside Park has their grand opening in October of 2007. Creekside Village is being built on 3,492 acres and they are planning for 7,100 residences. There will be a mixture of single family homes, age qulified homes (55 and over), multi family residences and custom and estate homes in the gated community of Carlton Woods Creekside. Rob Fleming Park will be opening in the first phase. The park is named for Texas Parks and Wildlife Naturalist and artist Rob Fleming. The park has playgrounds, picnic areas, tree lined promenades and will be surrounded by wildflowers.
