Southport Waterfront Market

Be sure to go to the Southport Waterfront Market tomorrow, Wednesday, and every Wednesday until Thanksgiving, from 8am-1pm at the Fort Johnston Garrison Lawn. Home made baked goods are generally available, crafts, and wonderful farm fresh produce. This is sponsored by Downtown Southport, Inc.

Tennis at St James Plantation

Tennis is a very popular activity in St James Plantation, according to my friends, the Ammanns. who live there and love the game. Thematches are generally set up by skill levels, so you usually play against someone at the same skill level or at least close. One of my friends is a 3.5 and the other a 4.0. I don't play the game, but I always enjoy hearing about their matches. The sport is so popular out there that they have spectators for certain matches. I guess the spectators are checking out the competition! So if you think all the retirement activity in Brunswick County is golf you need to think again!

Oak Island Lighthouse

Last weekend I bicycled on Caswell Beach Road, past the Oak Island Golf Club, to the entrance to Fort Caswell and then back to the Oak Island Lighthouse which is beside the Caswell Beach Coast Guard Station. The lighthouse was open because it was during the standard hours on a Saturday (they will open it by appointment as well). I sat and waited while our friends climbed the ladder like stairs up to the first level and then back down again. After a while I wandered over to a table display of lighthouse items for sale. The sale of these items keeps the lighthouse open, as it is now operated by a Friends of the Lighthouse group rather than the US Government. The quality of the items was wonderful, and many of these item are going to show up on my Christmas list. These items may be available online but I'm not sure of that! It's worth the trip. I do know that these items are for sale at the Caswell Beach Town Hall during the hours they are open during week-days.

Kayaking from Wildlife Boat Ramp Access

There are many excellent places to access kayaking water in Brunswick County. Launching from the Wildlife Boat Ramp off Fish Factory Road is ideal with immediate access to the Intracoastal Waterway and the creeks that branch off of it through the marsh. Last year I was kayaking behind the Ocean Greens waterfront homes after putting in at the Wildlife Ramp and a porpoise surfaced just off to my right.

Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry

One of the best deals in town is the opportunity to ride the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry across the Cape Fear River. You can walk on, drive on, or take your bicycle, then enjoy the breezes and views. The ferry runs year round but check their schedule by calling their local number, (910) 457-6942, or Call 1-800-By Ferry. Visit the North Carolina Aquarium and Fort Fisher Civil War Museum while on the other side.
