Thanks for reading!
Designed by architect, Jarvis Hunt, Kansas City's Union Station opened in 1914 at its' present location on the northwest corner of Pershing & Main. The site was chosen because it was higher than the flood plain and close to the business district.
The building design is in the beaux-art style with stone and ornate embellishment throughout the interior and exterior.
Pictured on the right toward the end of the day, Union Station faces south. This is the eastern end of the building. The western side is where passengers boarded the trains.
At the turn of the century, there were twelve train companies running through Union Station. Though I can't name them all, most you have heard about either from history lessons or popular folk, country & western, or blues songs.
This is the Grand Hall.
I believe the clock is original - and it still works!
Talk about your high end finishes! An ancient Egyptian pharaoh would feel right at home here.
The doors are so massive that I always feel like Alice going through the looking glass when I walk through them. "One pill makes you larger....one pill makes you small." I think Janis Joplin would enjoy Union Station as it is today.
Frank Nash and four of the FBI agents escorting him were shot to death in Union Station in 1933.
President Harry S. Truman traveled through Union Station many times.
Many of the early jazz and blues singers came through as well. Kansas City was a hopping place back in the day.
The craftsmen who laid the floor were absolutely meticulous. There are no uneven edges. Each cut is precise. The colors are perfect. It is flawless.
And check out some of the design on the exterior:
I could spend hours savoring the ornate details of this beaux-arts building - oh wait - I did!
Train passenger numbers topped out at over 600,000 per day in 1945 and declined afterward as automobile and plane travel became more prevalent as modes of travel.
Union Station began falling into decline by the 1960's. Amtrak was there in the 70's; gone in the 80's.
But Kansas Citians appreciated the unique beauty of the building and, in the 1990's, coughed up some additional tax monies to restore the building.
At a cost of 250 million dollars over a two year period, Union Station was restored to it's glory.
At ninety-five feet, it can't have been easy to restore this ceiling.
Shades of Michelangelo's crick in the neck!
Amtrak came back in the 2000's.
Along with train service, Union Station is now home to the Science Center, Gottlieb Planetarium, Regnier Extreme Screen, KC Rail Experience, the Irish Cultural Museum, City Stage, Harvey House Diner, Pierponts, Fastracks Deli, and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.
There are always interesting displays such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Bodies Revealed, Narnia, and others.
Standing by the west stairway looking up at the second story balcony in the lobby. This is a wonderful place to listen to a jazz quartet.
It is possible to rent the Grand Hall or other areas within the station for private parties, benefits, or receptions.
Educational trips for school groups are quite popular with students and teachers. You can even spend the night! Just call 816-460-2020 to make arrangements.
Thanks for visiting!
Hope you enjoyed the mini tour of Union Station in Kansas City enough to come see for yourself.

Kansas City's "Rainy Season."
This is Brush Creek, on the Plaza KCMO, yesterday. We were just heading back to the Prudential Kansas City Realty office after Agent Tour when we noticed the rushing water that had accumulated in the normally calm creek.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Kansas City, here's what Brush Creek looked like in February when the geese were migrating.
Here it is 9 June 2009:
Water is awesome!

Browne's sponsored the annual fundraiser for the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education today at 3300 Pennsylvania. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people enjoyed food, drink and music by Eddie Delahunt, Mike Dugger, Enter the Hagis, the Elders, and other musicians.
F.I.R.E. is dedicated to protecting and defending the individuals' rights on our campuses.
"These rights include:
freedom of speech
legal equality
due process
religious liberty and
sanctity of conscience."***
Not only does F.I.R.E. stand up for individual rights at the university level, they also advocate for elementary age school children who have special needs. They have assisted many children in the Kansas City area to obtain what they needed to remain in the school of their choice.
The face painting booth was very popular with the children. Here is one of the volunteers working the beer booth with her exquisitely painted face.
Enter The Hagis was one of the groups that played for the fundraiser. Not your traditional Irish music, this band rocks!
I'll have to invest in some recording equipment so that you can hear the bagpiper and the saxophone playing off one another. - Next time, eh?
The food, as always, was superb. The atmosphere - friendly and laid back. Browne's Irish Market & Deli has a huge lot behind their shop with ample room for bands, booths, the stage and still plenty of room for the children to run around.
