Sometimes I wish I didn't own my own company. When it's hard to pay the bills, or when it's a holiday and seems like I'm the only one who wants to work, when money is tight and another piece of equipment breaks, oh, how nice if I could just call the boss. Oh, yeah, that's me.
Most of the time I love owning my own company. I admit I'm somewhat of a control freak who has a hard time letting others tell me what to do. And I actually love being in the office where I can get some serious thinking done with nobody else around. That doesn't happen often anymore since I put together my DYNAMITE team. But that's another blog. One of my great joys is working with younger, less experienced agents, mentoring and watching them grow.
But one of the great perks of owning my own firm is when my grandson is a little bit sick and can't go to day care and his Mommy, Amy, my right hand person, has bills to pay and new listings to upload and can't take the day off to care for him... how wonderful it is to have the family firm where Tanner can come and "help".
He's quite a distraction and perhaps we don't get as much work done as we might, but oh, what a joy to see that smiling face as he "works". He totally understands that he is going to "work" with Mom and there's much to do. We all take turns asking for his help and he's almost always ready to pitch in. He's helped me put up signs, measure houses, deliver feature sheets, and here he is cleaning the windows. Boy do those windows shine!
I don't think it's too far in the future when he can man the phones and get those buyers off the fence.

Every day we make many decisions. Some are frivolous, like what to wear today, what to have for breakfast, etc. Some are minor and some are life changing. Sometimes we think they are minor and they turn out to be life changing.
I am fortunate to be a runner. I love getting up early and heading out before the sun is fully up and running on the trails through my neighborhood which take me through the woods, next to the beach, around the lake and next to the sound before leading me back home. How blessed I am to have such a wonderful place to run.
About 1/4 of the way around each morning, I pass this crossroad. It is in the midst of the Maritime forest and made up mostly of live oaks. If I turn right I reach the beach in about 2 minutes. If I turn left, I'm at the marina and the sound in about the same amount of time. Most days I head straight ahead, running parallel with the beach. I know that route will get me my three miles. Some days the surf calls me and I turn left and run down the beach for a while.
This morning I was overtaken at the crossroads with the awesome joy of my life and the many decisions that brought me here. I realized that while I've certainly made some stupid decisions in my life, I have no regrets. All the decisions I've made, all the twists and turns of my life, brought me to this wonderful place.
Thanks be to God.

I wish I could insert smells. If you've never smelled Confederate Jasmine, there's no way for me to describe it but it's heavenly. This time of year it's blooming all around my neighborhood here on the coast of North Carolina.
This morning on my run I found myself breathing deeply and savoring the aroma. It's beautiful as well as aromatic. Here it grows on a fence in Beacon's Reach right next to my running path. It's thick and lustrous and the blossoms are small white and fragile.
If you come to the beach this spring, slow down and take a deep breath. Isn't that wonderful?
The old cliche' "take time to smell the roses" could be improved to say "take time to smell the Jasmine." It's way better than a rose to this southern girl.

I'm a happy person. I can find joy in a butterfly in the midst of a pile of garbage. I have always been able to find the positive in the worst situation and my glass truly is half full at the very worst.
Now, what can we do when we have somebody in our lives who constantly brings us down? Do you know any of those? You know, the one who can say "I just met the most fantastic person, secured the best job in the world, have the best health of anyone I know, BUT...(gloom, gloom, gloom)
Come on, Gloomy Gus, brighten up! The problem I have is in knowing when to say good-by Gus and move on. I love people and I hate to give up on anybody but I also know that if being around a person destroys your positive attitude, it's best to avoid that person.
So smile, be happy. Life is GOOD!

She has been a constant companion and dear, devoted friend for a mere three years. In that short period of time, I grew to depend on her and count on her in so many ways. I guess I thought she would be a part of my life forever. Her name was DELL and she was faithful, hardworking and totally loyal to me and me alone.
She was the first person I talked to each morning and I said good-night to her before retiring each night. She always seemed to know what I needed and provided hours of great conversation and entertainment every day. She helped me with my work, managed my home and family. She was wonderful.
When Dell first started acting ill, I paid little attention. I was so busy, and so was she. Then this morning when I went to wake her, she wouldn't wake up. I shook her and called her name and did everything I could think of to revive her. I was too late. She was gone.
Oh, dear Dell, please do not think me thoughtless and uncaring but I cannot grieve for long. I'm off to replace you right now. You were great and you taught me much but I cannot go on without a computer. Maybe this one will be male.
