Townships vs Towns

What exactly is a township? I think this often confuses city dwellers when they first become interested in buying rural land. Generally, the different between a town and a township is a township refers to a surveyor's township. This is an older historical way to measure land whereas a town is a generally a unit of government.

A Town is a square tract of land measuring 36 square miles in total. Each township is usually 6 miles long and 6 miles wide. The town is then divided into 36 townships, or sections each being one square mile in size. These sections are then used as a way to describe a tract of rural land. Vernon County has 21 townships, with a total of 816 square miles of land a population of a little more than 28,000. This Photo is looking across the town of Liberty nearby the intersection of County SS and Highway 56. Here is a tip: if you are searching for land the municipality could be a town name, not a village or city name, which can cause some problems finding where it is located within Vernon County.

Southwestern Wisconsin has many scenic vistas, hidden valleys and many great trout steams. The Bad Axe River is such a stream. It meanders across the basin floor though parts of Crawford County on into Vernon County. It's approximately a 40 mile journey, until the Bad Axe reaches its mouth at the Mississippi River. Many fly fishing enthusiasts can be seen casting a line along this well known stream. The area's hillsides around Purdy are steep and densely wooded, with the valley floor being quite level. With open meadows and many springs feeding this cold groundwater stream its good habitat for trout.

The Land: The remnants and location of a former RV-Camper site are clearly evident on this parcel. There is a cement pad, a septic system and electric service. This building area or campsite is just a few steps to the stream. With plenty of room to install a new cabin, home or RV, it is an ideal location for any fly angler. The majority of the acreage is up hill, behind the camp site. A portion on top is somewhat flat and that can be accessed by several hiking trails. Whether you are a veteran fly fisher or a newbie, this property is positively worth a closer look. This is a 15 acre tract of land.
