Whether you’re a Bellaire or Houston area resident, new in town, or visiting the area - plan a trip to the Center and to Russ Pitman Park. The Nature Discovery Center is located in Russ Pitman Park at 7112 Newcastle, Bellaire, Texas, just inside the West 610 Loop, between Bellaire Blvd and Evergreen. You can explore the Discovery Rooms and park grounds on your own or plan to attend an upcoming event including:

You won’t want to miss the Horn Gala and Auction, High , February 19, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at The Cadillac Bar,  1802 Shepherd.

The Paul W. Horn Academy (“Horn”) is a Magnet elementary school located inside Loop 610 in Bellaire, TX.  Originally built in 1948, Horn has grown to support the educational needs of more than 600 students.  Horn has a long history of creative and dedicated teachers and administrative staff.  Over the last several years, Horn has achieved Exemplary status from the Houston Independent School District and the Texas Education Agency.

The Horn PTO is holding a Gala and Auction on February 19, 2011, and the theme of this year’s event, High Heels and Hard Hats, centers on the construction that is now underway for the new school building.  The event is funded through contributions by generous businesses and citizens like you.

Net proceeds from the Gala and Auction will go to fund the budgeted PTO initiatives for the 2010/2011 school year with additional proceeds to be used to supplement the Houston Independent School District’s plan for the new school building.  This year’s event is a chance for the community to be a part of building for the future of Bellaire!

Last year's event was a blast! It was a night of great food, fun, a chance to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. And, there were plenty of great auction items and deals to be had. This year's event is expected to be even better!

Bellaire (Houston) Texas Holiday in the Park

By: Matt Stanley, Realtor, Broker, Keller Williams Realty

You won’t want to miss this year’s annual Bellaire Holiday in the Park celebration! It will take place on Thursday, December 2, 2010, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bellaire Town Square at 7008 S. Rice. This family event is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season and no matter what the weather is like outside, you’ll find yourself swept away to a winter wonderland, no joke!

Snow is brought in by the truckloads to make a couple of snow play areas as well as a snow slide. With the areas split by age groups, even the youngest of snow bunnies can run around and have fun in the snow. My son loved throwing snowballs at me and our pictures would make you think we were far from Texas! How often do we get to see snow in Bellaire??

Santa makes a grand appearance, usually arriving on the biggest sleigh of all – a Bellaire fire truck. He stays on hand for pictures and to listen to children’s holiday wishes. So bring your camera, or you can purchase your picture from the professional photographer. The holiday music from a variety of bands and choirs will surely play all of your favorite holiday tunes and have your toes tapping. And, come with an appetite because you can have your dinner in the park with several great food options from local restaurants.

We think this may be our year to tackle the big snow slide and we have no doubt that the holiday train ride will again be at the top of our list of things to do. What a great chance to bundle up and visit with friends and neighbors. This is just one of the many activities that helps Bellaire maintain that small town feel and makes it a great place raise a family. It’s hard to imagine a better place to live or a better way to get into the holiday spirit than Bellaire Holiday in the Park!

Bellaire (Houston) Texas Halloween Dog Parade

By: Matt Stanley, Realtor, Broker, Keller Williams Realty

The fourth annual Bellaire Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade and Costume Contest will take place on Saturday, October 16, 2010, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Evergreen Park. This is a perfect opportunity for dog owners to show off their four-legged friends in creative Halloween costumes. This family event will be a good time for dog owners and lovers alike. If you don’t have a canine of your own, it might be worth borrowing one!

The Bellaire Buzz reported that more than 25 costume-clad dogs and their beloved owners strutted in front of the judges at the 2009 parade. My family and I attended in 2009 and had a fun time! We dressed our two stout English Bulldogs as bumble bees, in costumes designed to fit their svelte, stocky bodies! They loved every minute they had to buzz around the park. We saw everything from pets dressed as the Wizard of Oz characters to pumpkins and witches. Our sweet bees took home a 3rd place prize!

Halloween costume parades for dogs are becoming a local favorite with events planned across the nation, from New York’s Tompkins Square Park to Long Beach, California. Who can resist a Chow dressed for Samba or a Daschund mix dressed as Superman??

Need ideas for a costume for your favorite pooch? Check out these costume ideas and you’re sure to be inspired…or at least amused!

Prizes will be awarded in Large and Small dog categories for Best Fright Costumes, Best in Show Costumes, and even a Best Owner/Pet Costume for those two-legged adventurous types who want to share the spotlight with their furry friend. Registration is $10 per pet. The net proceeds go to a worthy cause, the Officer Lucy Dog Park. The parade route will begin at Evergreen Park which is located at Evergreen and Newcastle in Bellaire. It will continue south down Newcastle Trail and end at the Officer Lucy Dog Park.

The parade was developed in 2007 by Rachel Veldman, currently a student at Pin Oak Middle School. She coordinates and participates in the parade each year with her brother Larsen and their dog Maggie.
