Azar Nafisi will speak at the Carpenter Center Saturday, March 3, from 9 to 11 pm. It is an evening those concerned with human rights will not wish to miss.
Nafisi, native of Iran, is a lecturer and visiting fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute in the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. However, she is best known as the author of Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books.
Reading Lolita is the frightening yet compelling true life tale of how the Islamic revolution affected the life of a college professor and her students. First published in 2003, the book spent 117 weeks on the New York Time best seller list and has been translated into 32 languages. Since that time it has won numerous literary awards including the Persian Golden Lioness Award for literature, presented to Nafisi by the World Academy of Arts, Literature, and Media.
Nafisi's story is indeed a heroic one. In 1979, she was a professor of English-language literature at the University of Tehran. The Islamic revolution and Ayatollah Khomeini's subsequent rise to power brought about stringent rules regarding which literature could, and more specifically could not, be read, let alone studied at the university. Nafisi was subjected to a number of incidents of harassment including being temporarily expelled from the university for refusing to wear the traditional veil.
By 1995, Nafisi felt she could no longer teach literature properly at the university. She was under the constant scrutiny of the faculty authorities who kept watch on what was taught in university classrooms. She left the University of Tehran but continued to teach. She invited a group of seven women to study every Thursday morning at her home.
The books they studied included Lolita by Nabokov, Madam Bovary by Flaubert, and Daisy Miller by Henry James; books that would definitely have been forbidden by the stringent laws of post-revolutionary Iran. However Nafisi had more in mind than defying the rules. These workshops explored the relationship between culture and human rights.
When in 1997 Nafisi, who had been educated in the United States, returned, her drive to connect literature, culture, and human rights came with her. In addition to teaching at Foreign Policy Institute, she travels to other venues lecturing on the way literature can lead to transformation in the midst of a tyrannical environment.
The Carpenter Center is located at 6200 Atherton St., Long Beach, CA. The phone number is (562)985-700. Tickets are $35.
