RELAY FOR LIFE OF NEWTOWN
JUNE 13TH, 2009
ONLY 63 DAYS UNTIL RELAY!!!
Relay For Life® is the American Cancer Society's signature event that brings more than 3.5 million people from 4,900 communities across the country together each year to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much.
Relay For Life® is a fun-filled, overnight event that empowers everyone to help fight cancer by raising money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission. Teams of people camp out at local high schools, parks, or fairgrounds and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relay For Life® symbolizes the hope that people lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face the disease have support, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.
This year our Newtown's Relay For Life has moved to a new site . . . Fairfield Hills! This will be our 6th year of community participation. There is great support form the community and local business. It was listed in the top 11 favorite thing about Newtown in a 2007 survey of Newtown residents. This years theme is "All American Picnic"
In 2004 our town raised $174,000
In 2005 - $250,000
In 2006 - $335,000
In 2007 - $361,000
And last year our town raised $410,000! What a fabulous opportunity to experience such an uplifting event!
This year our "Kids for a Cure" will start 3:00pm - 5:00pm. The Relay kicks off at 5:30pm!

Or is it just temporary? On February 14, 2009 the Hawleyville Post Office clerk was surrounded by supportive customers as the flag was being lowered - the faces that patrons had come to associate with service at the Route 25 branch of the United States Postal Service (USPS) were already missing the friendly staff.
A committee was developed, "Save Hawleyville Post Office". They immediately sprang into action and collected more than 1,400 signatures including my support, Mandy Beckett along with gaining the support of Congressman Christopher Murphy, Newtown First Selectman Joe Borst and local area residents. While the group was not successful in halting the February 14th closing, on February 4th the office of Congressman Murphy issued a press release announcing that the USPS has procured final approval for funding to build a new Hawleyville Post Office and would expedite that work, hoping for a late summer re-opening. "After months of uncertainty concerning the fate of the Hawleyville Post Office, today 2/04/09 Congressman Chris Murphy declared victory and announced that the United States postal Service has approved a new facility, to be built under an expedited schedule, so that Hawleyville residents will continue to have their postal needs fully served". He also stated, "This is a tremendous victory for Hawleyville, and the shining example of how a community rallying together for a common cause can make a difference"!
