Owensboro, Kentucky has experienced one of the worst ice storms in its history. It paralyzed the area because of ice, snow and the the widespread power outages which has left many without heat, water and electricity, or phone. Many families had to scramble for shelter and were iced in for days. It is amazing just how much we tend to take the simple luxuries of life for granted. (at least I know I did)
My family was very lucky that our gas log fireplace worked rather well and we were able to keep warm. We had flashlights and batteries, and hurricane lamps. We spent five evenings listening to the radio to keep abreast of what was going on in Owensboro and listening to 102 which was a great christian radio station. I certainly did NOT miss the TV, but I think my husband did!
Another thing that was interesting is that many places could only accept cash as their computers were down and banks were closed. Be sure to keep some cash on hand in case of emergencies! I tried to find batteries and there were no C or D cells to be found! I went ahead and ordered some from the internet today, just to be safe. A generator is next on the list. Unfortunately, there are still many in Owensboro and the surrounding areas with out power. I know that as late this afternoon, my office, Home Realty GMAC was still without power! I would have thought that they would be up and running before me! It just goes to show you that Kenergy and OMU do the very best they can in these trying times. I am just thankful that it only took them 5 days before our powere was restored. It could have take much longer. So go on and get out there and make sure you have what you need on hand in case of an emergency! Get those flashlights, and battery operated coleman lanterns, plenty of flashlights, bottled water, non perishable food items, maybe even a generator if at all possible. It is as easy as ordering over the internet and getting it delivered right to your front door. It just doesn't get any easier than that! Being prepared is always best!

Is your horse with the Dogwood tree available for purchase in a 16 x 20? WHAT ???
This is the question I received about the above Horse photo in my email on Nov. 11, 2007. At first I thought it was a silly joke. He couldn't be serious, could he? Here are the actual emails, with last names xxxx out for privacy.
Date Nov. 11, 2008 Actual email I received: "Good morning, I was wondering if the photo of the horse with the dogwood tree in the back ground would be available for purchase in a 16x20. I work for Atmos Energy Corp and we are building a new office just off the bypass in Owensboro and need additional photos to hang." Larry xxxxx
I thought surely he doesn't mean my activerain picture?( I show a bigger photo later in blog that is easier to see :)
My response: "Hi Larry,
Are you serious? Did you see it on the Internet? I am honored that you like it that much! "Vickie McCartney
His response: "Yes, my wife and I travel around Kentucky and do photo work for Atmos Energy when they build new offices, I also work for Atmos. I was searching the web looking for additional Owensboro photos when I saw your photo. I really do like the photo, you were in the right place at the right time. Did you take it with film or digital?" Larry
My response: "It is digital. I love that picture too! Hey, If I let you use it for free, could you give Vickie McCartney, Realtor in Owensboro, KY credit for it? I could really use the advertising since I am new to Owensboro? (But I am not new to real estate)" Vickie

His response: "When the photo is hung we put a label underneath with the photographer name and something about the photo. I can have a local lady with our company there in Owensboro arrange to contact you and if you can download the photo onto a cd that would be great. If you need a cd we would furnish also. The lady is Kay XXXXX, manager of public affairs."
His email to Kay, that she forwarded to me: "Kay would you contact a Vickie McCartney, broker at Home Reality Owensboro. 270-315-5354. She has a photo that would look good in the new office. She is willing to give us the photo (we would pay for enlarging) for photo credit. I agreed to this. Photo needs to be download onto a CD so I can have enlarged."

Well, I actually just clicked them through my front windshield, so they may not be the best quality.
The sky color was so unusual and I had to try to capture it rather quickly since cars were whizzing by so quickly! You would think they were in a hurry because Santa was coming.....
You really had to be there to experience the unusual hues of purple, pink, blue and yellow skies!

This is NOW! I just can't can't help myself. I am just a proud grand-mom and have got to share this beautiful christening picture of my Baby Boy! For those of you that remember, I posted a baby photo of him when he was first born the end of April. I am going to post it again just to show the reality of how quickly time flies and how quickly our little ones grow up. Is there any way I can keep this grandson little? There are two public school systems, Owensboro and Daviess County, plus the Owensboro Catholic School system, comprise the K-12 education system in the community. Heritage Christian and Good Shepherd operate Christian schools providing education from preschool to middle school and preschool to high school respectively. The Triplett School offers private education for kindergarten through high school.
The Adult education programming is available at the Longfellow Education Center.
Owensboro is home to two four-year liberal arts colleges--Brescia University and Kentucky Wesleyan College. Each has an enrollment of approximately 800 students. The region is home to the Owensboro Community College, one of 13 community colleges in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). More than 2,300 students attend the community college. The two locations of Owensboro Technical College, located in Owensboro, are also a part of KCTCS.

The RiverPark Center
The curtain is always rising on a new event at this performing arts and civic center which is located on the Ohio River in downtown Owensboro. The RiverPark Center includes a 1,500 seat multi-purpose auditorium, an experimental theatre that seats up to 300, lobbies and support facilities, a riverfront plaza, an open-air courtyard, and meeting/reception rooms. Each year, the RiverPark Center hosts more than 150 performance events and more than 900 civic events.
The RiverPark Center is home to several local performing arts organizations including the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, Owensboro Dance Theatre, the Owensboro Community College Oak Island Theatre, and the Owensboro Concert Association. The International Bluegrass Museum
Bill Monroe, known as the "father of bluegrass music," was born and raised in Rosine, Ky., just a short drive from Owensboro. That tradition is still alive and well in the area and is celebrated at the International Bluegrass Music Museum, which displays the history of bluegrass music through interpretive exhibits, posters, costumes and instruments. Other local bluegrass events include a winter concert, the Yellowbanks Dulcimer Festival at English Park and the annual Bluegrass Blast during the last weekend in September.
Owensboro Symphony Orchestra
The Owensboro Symphony Orchestra has an annual concert schedule and performs at the RiverPark Center. The symphony performs with some of the best musical talent in the world and annually conducts a Christmas Pops concert.
Theatre Workshop of Owensboro
Theatre Workshop of Owensboro (TWO) is celebrating 40 years of presenting community theatre to Owensboro and Daviess County. Shows planned for 2004 include "Rope", "Sylvia", and "Painting Churches". TWO is housed in the Old Trinity Centre, which is a registred historic landmark.
Museum of Science & History
The Owensboro Area Museum of Science and History and the Wendell Ford Government Education Center is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the region. Among the features of the museum are historic memorabilia, including arts, crafts, and antiques, as well as natural history exhibits and a planetarium. A new Speedzeum opened in 2003 and celebrates the rich racing heritage of the Owensboro-Daviess County region, covering everything from Soapbox Derby to local dirt track auto racing to NASCAR, motorcycle racing to hydroplane boats. With six active NASCAR drivers and countless crew members in service in NASCAR's various racing circuits, Owensboro claims one of the highest levels of motorsports participation of any city in the country. The Speedzeum demonstrates and celebrates this connection, beginning in the early 20th century and following the developments right up through present day, featuring displays of racing vehicles, audio/visual presentations and interactive displays, including a full-scale NASCAR simulator.
Owensboro Museum of Fine Arts
The Owensboro Museum of Fine Arts is housed in two historic structures-the Carnegie Library and the John Hampden Smith House, which dates back to the Civil War. The museum features a permanent collection of 19th- and 20th-century paintings and sculptures, decorative arts dating back as far as the 16th century, and the spectacular Stained Glass Gallery. The museum also features traveling exhibits and hosts educational youth tours during the school year.
The Public Library
The Daviess County Public Library provides services to the entire county population from a single facility located in Owensboro.
