Did you know that Owensboro, Kentucky is the home of the world's largest Sassafras Tree? Well, it is. This natural wonder is almost 300 years old and it measures over 100 feet tall with over 21 feet in circumference. It is one of the first things we came to find during our relocation and home search.
It was very interesting especially for my husband and son, as my son is an Arborist and together they have planted over 1000 trees just this year. This natural wonder right in the heart of Owensboro, Ky is located on Fredericka Street which is one of the busiest streets and a main thoroughfare in town.
Call or email me,Vickie McCartney, if you are coming this way, I would love to take you to see it! It really is pretty amazing to see.
I have included a recipe from wikipedia for sassafras tea from this wonderful tree. First, You will need to find a "sassafras tree." It is usually found in cool damp shady areas in the southern united states and can be smelled. It has a unique leaf pattern of one leaf the next has two because of a split on the side and the third three parts to the leaf because of the splits. Look up online to find a picture of the plant. The roots of the plant runs underground connecting to the next plant.
#1 Go ahead and Dig up the roots, wash and cut into 2 to 3 inch pieces.
#2 then you will need to let dry for a week or so. The longer the curing process the better the flavor but they may have a shelf life of a season or so.
#3 You will need to boil 4 to 7 pieces of the root in a quart of water for twenty or so and let steep.
#4 Then go ahead and add sugar the same amount of sugarthat you would add to that of regular Iced Tea and let cool down.
#5 Now, go ahead and add more water to make it a gallon and enjoy.
#6 If you want to make your tea stronger or sweeter add more or less roots / sugar. Enjoy!

Oh! Look at the little "Snowbabies".....in their own back yard in the snow. Well, they are not actually snow babies, but they are in the snow -They are so snuggly and they are "best friends" and they live for and totally trust each other too. They are with each other every step of the way. They are simply enjoying each other in the snow. Don't they just have the life? Did you get a chance to get out and play in your own neighborhood and frolic in the snow?
These two furry friends are named Jillie, she is the Golden Retriever, and Bela is the yellow lab. They are actually my daughter's dogs, and she really acts like they are her daughters... my daughter has a form of Autism, she is 26 years old and these dogs truly are her life! She lives for them and is very attached to them. The house we bought in Owensboro,KY was bought so that the dogs would have a place to go and so that our daughter would have her own space within our house. They have helped her in life too. Did you know that pets are great for children with autism? I must admit, these furry creatures adore her too! These dogs provide her with something that she can take care of and love and they love her right back. They love her unconditionally and would protect her to the end. And, I thought diamond's were a girls best friend?
