Glacier View Meadows Subdivision- and other interesting facts

Glacier View Meadows, is a beautiful mountain subdivision near Red Feather Lakes, Colorado.

Glacier View Meadows Colorado homes and views

Most of the roads within the subdivision are named after mountains in Colorado, and 28 of those roads are named after "Fourteeners".

A "Fourteener" is a Mountain whose peak is over 14,000 feet in elevation. In addition to the elevation, the peak must be 300 feet above any saddle which connects it to another nearby mountain. The greatest number of the Nation's "Fourteeners" are in Colorado, however there are higher mountains in Alaska, California and Washington.

55 Colorado Peaks rise high into the clouds above 14,000 feet, that is 2 1/2 vertical miles above sea level, and well above timberline! Climbing all of the Fourteeners is popular among mountaineers.

Colorado Fourteener Panorama by wolczyk/Dreamstime.com

The Colorado Mountain Club is the official registrar of Colorado's Fourteeners and they also maintain the list of every person who has climbed all 55 of the high peaks.

People who live in Glacier View Meadows, could say they climbed Mount Massive, or Torreys Peak, or Grays Peak all in one day......but that would just be the names of the subdivision roads and not the "real" 14er mountains!

Just another interesting fact about our area.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife says that “Bears have people problems”

The Colorado Division of Wildlife says that "Bears have people problems"

Although the "Bear Activity" is moderate in the Red Feather Lakes area, in other parts of Colorado, there have been some pretty exciting and grisly accounts of bear encounters.

Recently, a bear decided to go for a stroll in an Aspen fur shop, looked around, and then left! I guess he didn't see anything he liked there, or perhaps it was too hot outside to purchase a fur?

Another bear decided to break into a house while the family slept, and help himself to all the items in the pantry!

Sadly, it was reported last week, that a 74 year old woman was killed by a bear near Ouray, Colorado. Two bears were killed by law enforcement, too. One was the murderous male bear weighing 400 pounds, and another aggressive but innocent bear that wandered onto the crime scene was killed also. Apparently, the woman often fed the bears, and had done so for several years.

Once a bear has been fed, or can get human food, garbage, bird seed, etc., they will continue to come back.

According to the DOW, a bear can easily smell food 5 miles away! There are many things we can do to keep ourselves safe and by doing so, we can keep the bears safe too.

Once they find food, they will come back for more.

Bird feeders can attract bears! The Colorado Department of Wildlife recommends not feeding the birds while bears are active, and of course do not keep garbage or recyclables where bears can get to them. The bears learn that it is OK to go near humans and their homes, when they can easily find a snack there.

Generally shy, a bear will run away from perceived danger. They become dangerous when they are used to being around humans, surprised or cornered.... Or when they are in your home!

For more information about living and camping in bear country please visit the Colorado Department of Wildlife.

It is estimated that there are 8,000 to 12,000 bears in Colorado.
