Head 'em up- Mooooooooove 'em out!

Don't ask me about cows -I have a cowboy hat, but I don't know beans about cows. Like most people, I know about milk, beef, leather...and I know that every June the cows move from the low pasture to the high pasture. I know, after 13 years of commuting to the city, my office thought that a cattle drive was about the best excuse they had ever heard of for being late!

It happened yesterday!

The first cattle drive of the year!

I first saw them on the road near my house

Yesterday was cool, cloudy and drizzling rain

and they mooooooove sooooooo slowly!

Who says happy cows are from California?

The cows move about 3 miles per hour

It's a long day for the cattle drivers

and of course, I ran into them again on my way to work, I took this through the windshield.

It looks like a lot of work to keep those cows moving, but this kind of a traffic jam just makes me smile.

Tiny Alpine signs of Spring!

It's a spectacular mountain day in Glacier View Meadows!

It's 78 degrees today, with the exception of a few small patches of snow in some areas, there are tiny signs up Spring popping up all over the hillside.

Here are a few signs of Spring from my walk today.

(There was even a Bee on one of the tiny flowers)

Alpine Gyposophila

These little pink flowers would be easy to miss.

It looks like soon the Honeysuckle will be in Bloom

and the Mountain Mahogany is starting to bud

Our dog decided it would be a good day to wade in the water

I think she's grinning!

The best find of the day was the Purple Pasque Flower

a sure sign that Spring is here!

Purple Pasque Flower

There are no big beautiful displays yet...these tiny little signs are out there,

I just had to go on a walk and find them!

I hope you found some tiny treasures in your day too!

Let’s go to the Oxygen Bar, I’ll buy you some air

mountainsLack of oxygen causes High-Altitude sickness. At higher altitudes the air becomes "thinner," which means there is less oxygen is in the atmosphere. With each breath, you get less oxygen in your lungs so the amount of oxygen in your blood declines, also.

When someone coming from a lower elevation feels sick at high altitudes, it's called High- Altitude sickness or Mountain sickness. There's a medical term for it too, but we'll leave that one for the doctors. The symptoms usually become noticeable around 7,000 or 8,000 feet. People who have heart or lung disease may experience symptoms at even lower elevations.

This post is not about climbing Mount Everest or Annapurna! (the higher the altitude, the greater the effects) and I'm not a doctor, but our own Red Feather Lakes doctor, Dr. Janice Weixelman travelled to Nepal in 2006 to study the effects of extreme altitude on people who travel there to climb those huge mountains!

I have lived in Colorado all my life, and was never concerned about the high altitude except for the special baking directions - But for some people, high- altitude sickness is very real.

I started researching this topic so I would know what to look for in order to help my clients who travel to Red Feather Lakes, Colorado looking for their own special place in the Colorado Mountains.

The Village of Red Feather Lakes is approximately 8100 to 8200 feet; Bellaire Lakes which is not far from the Village is 8600 feet. There are many locations on this planet that are higher in elevation, and if you are traveling to any of them you may experience high-altitude or mountain-sickness.

Symptoms usually begin within the first 2 days after arriving at a high altitude and can include:

  • Headaches
  • Breathlessness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Insomnia
  • Swelling of the face, hands and feet

picnic take it easyGenerally high altitude sickness is temporary and the symptoms go away as your body adjusts, however for certain people it can be very serious and even life threatening causing cerebral or pulmonary edemas.

If you have any concerns or health conditions consult with your physician, before you leave home!

I've read that increasing altitude slowly is the best way to avoid the effects of high altitude. If you are coming from sea level, take 2 days to reach 8,000 feet, and then another day for each 1,000 to 2,000 feet higher.

Although that's not always possible, you will still adjust in a few days and here are some tips to help:

  • Avoid strenuous activity; don't overexert yourself for the first day or two.
  • Drink extra fluids, especially water
  • Use caution when drinking alcohol. It will affect you more at a higher altitude!

And, I recommend you go to the Oxygen Bar!

When you come to look at property you will be amazed at how beautiful Red Feather Lakes is

and if you experience any problems with the altitude,

I'll take you over to Dr. Janice's Red Feather Lakes Clinic,

there's an Oxygen Bar there and I'll buy you some "air"!

I’m not Spaced Out I’m just Star Gazing in Red Feather Lakes

moon & starsLike many places around the world, you can see a million stars on a clear night in the Red Feather Lakes area.

One of the things I love about living here, is that our subdivision covenants prohibit leaving our outside lights on at night.

We don't have street lights either, so there is no artificial light interfering or competing with the starlight...

If you have been far away from the city lights, you know exactly what I'm talking about! The abundance of stars is overwhelming.

There is something very peaceful and comforting about a night sky lit up with a million stars. Sitting outside on the deck, I am reminded how small I am in this universe! You can check your ego at the first star, and then wish upon another one.

I am a casual star gazer, I don't have a telescope and The Big Dipper, Orion and Cassiopeia are only a few constellations that I know and can recognize. There are so many stars it's hard to imagine that these same stars served as a guide for ancient mariners.

Tell me about your favorite star gazing place. Have you been to an Observatory or Planetarium in your area? Have you seen the Northern Lights? That is something I really want to see someday.

.city lights

City lights are beautiful, even though they dim the stars. They are necessary for traffic, safety and commercial buildings,

but when I get home it's nice to look up in the sky and see those brilliant stars sprinkled across my beautiful Red Feather Lakes Sky!
