Death of a Newspaper: Goodbye Rocky Mountain News

dog fetching paperWhen we lived in the City, we taught our dog, Jesse to go out in morning and fetch the Newspaper.

What a great dog to do this for us! She would happily go out in the snow and the rain – weather conditions not suitable for slippers and pajamas! If the paper was buried under the snow, she would sniff it out and unbury it!

One Sunday, my mother-in-law was staying with us and gave Jesse a treat for getting the paper. Jess thought that was really great, so she proceeded to go to all seven houses in our cul-de-sac and collect their papers, in order to get more treats!

There was the Rocky Mountain News, The Denver Post, and the local Fort Collins paper, The Coloradoan. I did my best to return the correct paper to the rightful owners….

Last Friday, the beloved Rocky Mountain News closed. The final front page headline simply read:

“Goodbye Colorado”

The Rocky Mountain News’ first edition was produced in Denver on April 23, 1859. The paper was 55 days short of its 150 anniversary, a victim of a bad economy and the internet generation.

It was a sad day for Coloradoans and all who loved the Rocky Mountain News.

coffe and newspaperThe daily newspaper, whether you read it in the morning or the evening is something I took for granted. I would hate the day, when I couldn’t sit outside and read the paper, or cozy up in my favorite chair and “peruse the news”.

The only thing positive I can think of, for the closing of the Rocky Mountain News, is that if we still lived in the city, and if we still had our Newspaper thieving dog, Jesse, I would have one less paper to sort and return!

They are out there! ...did you think I was talking about buyers??!!

They are out there! ...did you think I was talking about buyers??!!

Yes! There are buyers out there finding great deals, after all it is a buyer's market. But this post is not about buyers, it is about mountain lions ~ and they are out there too!

One February day several years ago, I was looking out the window.

To my surprise, walking down the road, just like he owned the place, was a huge mountain lion! I ran to get the binoculars! I couldn't believe my eyes! I watched the lion continue down the road and disappear into the trees across the lake.

According to the Department of Wildlife these big cats can be found almost anywhere in Colorado where a "suitable population of deer exists."

Most people will never see a lion, because they are rather secretive, seeing ONE once was spectacular!

BUT NO!! ONCE WAS NOT ENOUGH!!

A few years after, our dog (who is always inside at night) woke us up at 3:00 a.m. Her incessant barking and growling indicated something was terribly wrong!

No, there were no intruders!

Upon further investigation, we saw that the outside motion light was on; and outside, not 4 feet from the side door was a mountain lion who had just taken down a deer! The deer was still breathing, but no amount of noise was going to make that lion let go of her dinner.

We watched the lion for awhile as she nervously dragged her prey further and further from the door. I tried to take a picture....but, sadly did not get one. Here is the picture of the mountain lion, HA!

Well, it was dark!

If you live in Mountain Lion Country please visit www.colorado.gov/wildlife for more information about what to do if you encounter a lion and safety tips for keeping your home, pets and family safe.

Don't feed the deer, as it is against the law and you may be attracting lions to your property.

Colorado's abundant wildlife is one of the things that we like best about living here. As the population grows we have grown in closer contact with deer, elk, moose and other wildlife, to the delight of all wildlife watchers!

Colorado is "Greener" thanks to 2008 legislation

Many Homeowners Associations impose Covenants Conditions and Restrictions. Protective Covenants protect the integrity and beauty of the subdivision and Restrictive Covenants, restrict the homeowner from doing certain things, i.e.:

leaving your Christmas lights up all year,

painting your house pink with purple polka dots,

having a pet pig,

or having an outside clothes line.

Wait a minute! a clothes line?!

That may be surprising, but it's true!

I remember hanging clothes on the line with my Mom when I was a little girl, and the way the sheets smelled like sunshine!

Until last year many people were forced into using their Electric or Gas clothes dryer, even if they didn't want to use the energy!

Other common restrictions might include the use of evaporative coolers, awnings, solar energy and wind-electric generators.

In case you missed it, last year Governor Ritter signed a very important piece of legislation for Colorado Homeowners. The new legislation allows homeowners to install select, energy-saving improvements, regardless if they are prohibited by the recorded covenants, conditions, and restrictions of their subdivisions.

Homeowners Associations and Condominium Associations may regulate these alternative energy devices, but only to the extent that the law allows.

Colorado homeowners can now install the following alternative energy, or energy efficient devices, even if originally prohibited by the covenants subject to any rules and regulations adopted by their community associations:

  • * Solar energy devices
  • * Wind-electric generators
  • * Awnings, shutters, and other shade structures marketed for the purpose of reducing energ consumption
  • * Garage and attic fans
  • * Evaporative coolers
  • * Energy-efficient outdoor lighting devices
  • * Retractable clotheslines

The new statute further defined solar energy devices, (already permitted for years by law) and requires that wind-electric generators meet the Public Utilities Commission's standards for interconnection.

If you are interested in installing any of these energy saving improvements to your existing home, or incorporating them into new construction, check with your Homeowners Association regarding any regulations regarding size, placement, and appearance.

The statute doesn't preclude community associations from applying any architectural review process before an owner may install a proposed device. Associations may also address any real safety concerns in their rules for these improvements.

Whether you are living in a new or old subdivision, you can help reduce our energy consumption, carbon footprint and save our natural resources, this new legislation is very beneficial in that regard!

Unfortunately, if you want to paint your house purple with pink polka dots and have a pet pig, your Association can still say "NO"! and you may need to move to a different area. :-)

Red Feather Lakes Community Library Celebrating 40th Anniversary!

The Village of Red Feather Lakes (proper) only has about 523 residents. The surrounding area, outside of the Village is vast, with homes situated throughout the mountains, in the valleys, and out on the prairie. Still, we are a small community, and in the midst of this small community you will find a gem:

The Red Feather Lakes Community Library

The Library is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year!

From humble beginnings in 1969, the first library began in the basement of the POA Building with $240.00, a gift from the County Commissioners and 250 donated books that were on the shelves of an abandoned store.

A new building was built in 1987 with community donations of "land, money, labor and love"( those are the exact words from the Library) and in 2005 an addition doubled it's size.

The Red Feather Mountain Library District is the smallest District in Colorado, covering just 37 square miles. The library is an invaluable resource providing services to this Mountain Community, such as:

A local history section

Free high speed internet access

Copier & Fax services

And Statewide courier service! The courier service opens up access to over 6 million items from libraries across Colorado!

Workshops, education, and a site for the annual 9Health Fair.

In the March 2009 edition of Woman's Day, Carol Strazer of Red Feather Lakes, CO was featured for her article on how the library improved her health, and how she found the necessary medical information she needed, with the help of our library and a free medical class she had attended there. .

Carol's article is featured with others from large Metropolitan areas such as San Francisco, Des Moines, and Minneapolis ~ so congratulations to Carol, first of all for getting well and also for putting our small community library in the spotlight in a nationally syndicated magazine.

Honorably mentioned, and so well deserved, in the article were our head librarian Sarah Myers, her staff and volunteers! How awesome is that!

The library is such an important part of our Red Feather Lakes Community, and we are so fortunate to have it!

A true Gem in our community, Happy 40th Anniversary to the Red Feather Lakes Library! Congratulations!!
