Raleigh is a great place to live and work. Being only a couple of hours from the mountains and a couple of hours from the beaches, what more could you want...?
If you find yourself near Wilmington or the beaches for a day, you may want to take a free tour of the US Coast Guard Cutter Dilligence, provided it is in port on that day! For additional information visit www.uscg.mil/lantarea/cgcdiligence.
If the kids are getting bored with your community pool you may want to travel to the West side of the state to the mountains. Here you can visit one of the many waterfalls and hiking opportunities that exist. For example, if you visit Sliding Rock near Brevard, you can actually slide down a 60 foot sloping slide into an 8 foot deep mountain pool! How is that for excitement? 11,000 gallons of water flow down over the rock face each minute. Where else can you have this much fun on a hot summer day?
Are you interested in history? North Carolina is very rich in culture and history. There are a few places that you may want to put on the family vacation calendar for this summer. For example, Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. After this discovery, gold mining spread rapidly. During the peak, gold mining was second only to farming in North Carolina. The estimated value of gold mined reached over one million dollars a year! North Carolina led the nation in gold production until the mid 1800's and the California gold rush.
You can acutally take guided tours in some of the underground tunnels at the Reed mine. A visitor center displays exhibits of gold and historical mining equipment. http://www.nchistoricsites.org/Reed/reed.htm

With all of the banking turmoil over the past few years, the Obama administration has announced the latest strategy to get us on the right track. It is met with some skepticism by mortgage brokers but the less complex the mortgage products are made, the better for everyone! This new consumer protection agency would overhaul current U.S. mortgage lending practices.
The new agency would require lenders to offer mortgages with much more simple terms. Mortgage brokers would be required to present home owners with the best available mortgage loans and ensure that borrowers could afford them. This is a great idea, provided it is kept simple. There would be bans on prepayment penalties and so-called "yield spread premiums," which provide incentives to brokers to steer borrowers to more expensive loans.
