That is right! Get that stuff out of your gutter or gutters as the case may be.
Maintaining gutters is not difficult, but too often ignored. We can face the facts, cleaning gutters is not high on the fun task list. Not too sexy. It is, however, important to your home.
One of the first things to do is to remove all debris that can slow the ability of water to drain effectively from the roof. Trapped water can be destructive not only to the gutters themselves but to the adjoining roof as well. Remember, water is a corrosive-think of the Grand Canyon and then consider what water can do to your shingles.
This same principle applies to how your gutters drain. All the gutters in the world will not help if they incorrectly drain. Make sure gutter water drains away from your home. Water must always be moved away from a house.
There are over a dozen materials from which to choose if you are replacing gutters. Choose a professional. Yes, even in the non-sexy world of gutters, you need a pro to choose the right type for your home. Handy folks like to purchase and install their own gutters and if you are so inclined, have at it. But do not think that the lowly gutter is an unimportant part of your home. That would be a mistake.
All of us would be doing our homes a favor if we maintained our gutters better. So, next time someone says, "get your mind out of the gutter," respond by saying, "Did you know there are over a dozen material choices possible for gutters?" People will be impressed...or not.

In an announcement predicted to bolster the housing industry, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday, September 23, 2009 that it intended to keep key lending rates near zero "for an extended period" and continue to buy mortgage-backed securities and debt through March 2010.
This is the second time the Fed has decided to stretch out its program to encourage spending and stimulate the economy. Economists predict that keeping the key lending rate near zero into the first quarter of next year will result in consumer loans, including mortgages, home-equity loans, and credit-card rates, remaining at the lowest point in decades.
Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com, was quoted by the Associate Press's Jeannine Aversa as warning that these rates will eventually head higher and noted that home owners interested in refinancing should realize that "it could be a different story 12 months from now," with much higher rates for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages.
The message seems clear, prospective homeowners should not hesitate to move forward in acquiring homes. Miss timing the market could prove to be quite expensive if rate tick up. It is an easy analysis to use an amortization schedule to see what an increase of .25 or .5% would mean to a mortgage loan. Buyers waiting for another 1-2% drop in pricing could be shooting themselves in the foot if they are not careful as rate increases can easily increase the mortgage many times the purchase price dollars saved. Buyers should have their mortgage professionals run a couple examples of what an increase will do their amortization. The results can be staggering.
The message is completely clear to prospective buyers: buy now!

As said many times in this spot before, Piney Z is a wonderful neighborhood in Tallahassee. One of the cool things that happens is that twice a year, spring and fall, the neighborhood has a community wide yard sale.
On average about 70 homeowners participate each time. Piney Z starts hopping at about 6 a.m. as the "professionals" scour the area while people are setting up. The regular crowd shows up at about 6:45 a.m. and the day begins.
Because Piney Z is such a nice neighborhood, the quality of items sold is quite high. Nice furniture, collectibles and even a few antiques are usually found with the normal yard sale fare. It is a great event that the Home Owner's Association advertises.
I can't promise you will find the next treasure for Antiques Road Show, but you will have a good time, meet some terrific people and maybe find that special item you just have to have! Come on out to the neighborhood and be sure to say, "hey" when you see me.

Recently, great friends of ours from Illinois stopped to visit on the way to Central Florida. When friends visit from outside the area stay for a day or two we always try to make a trip down to Wakulla Springs.
This fantastic state park is the home to an amazing fresh spring where still today, the source in unknown. The park features a wonderful boat ride on the river created by the spring with wildlife galore! Of course, this is Florida so this means alligators.
Pictured here with my wife Laurie are our great friends of almost 15 years, Lyle, Kyle and Judy Welch. Lyle recently retired from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois as a match professor.
The weather on this morning was terrific.
Wakulla Springs was used as a ocation in the filming of several Tarzan movies starring Johnny Weissmuller. Also filmed at the Springs were The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Airport 77, references lost on the young, but interesting for us oldsters. Just the name Johnny Weissmuller evokes strong memories for many.
Whenever we are on one of the cruises it is fun to watch the reaction of the different ages to learning the Tarzan movies were filmed here. It ranges from "ooohs" from the older passengers, to scratched heads or questions of "Who?" from the younger on the boat.
For those who know Johnny Knoxville better that Weissmuller, the boat ride is still a joy. The variety of wildlife, plants and fauna is amazing. Wakulla Springs is the way Florida used to be and it pleasing that the State focuses on keeping such natural wonders alive.
So, if you find yourself in the Tallahassee area, go see Wakulla Springs!
