Statesville, NC - Information and Links

January 1789, Statesville was founded by an act of the General Assembly after North Carolina joined the United States. While the history of Statesville is vague, it is believed to be originally named "the states vil". The first courthouse was constructed in 1790 and built on a lot purchased from Fergus Sloan next to the Fourth Creek Presbyterian Meeting house, an area most of us have come to call "the square". Lots around the courthouse were sold at public auction for other business, thus beginning downtown Statesville. Two miles north of Statesville was Fort Dobbs. The fort was to defend the forefront of civilization from 1756 to approximately 1764. Statesville was considered to be the center of the district of the Revolutionary War. In 1847 Statesville was incorporated as a city.

The Western North Carolina railroad, was the first railroad to reach Statesville in 1858, by linking Salisbury to Asheville. Shortly after the Western service began, the Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio Railroad (ATO) started serving the Statesville to Charlotte line. Originally there were two Depots for the two separate lines but bother were burned down in the late 1800's during the Civil war and later rebuilt.

The greatest growth for Statesville came between the period from 1860's to the 1930's. The railroad brought finished and raw goods and carried out finished goods to be sold in other cities. It also allowed people to be connected to other parts of the world and to allow visitors to come to visit.

The "Ballard of Tom Dooley", by the Kingston Trio, made the Depot Hill area famous for hangings in the region. The song was the story of a love triangle and a trial for murder which resulted in Tom Dula's hanging. Tom Dula is buried in Wilkes County.

At the turn of the century industries were based around three primary products: Herbs, tobacco and liquor. Herbs were shipped from the Wallace Herbarium on Meeting Street to all over the world. The liquor and tobacco money built many of the downtown buildings.

Today Statesville has five National Register of Historic Place Districts including four residential districts: Broad Street/Davie Avenue, Mitchell College, Academy Hill, Race Street and the Downtown Statesville Commercial District.

Troutman History

In 1853, Mrs. Anne Troutman, a widow, moved with her family to a point in the forks of the Charlotte Road and the Perth Church Road and with her two sons, Jacob and Sidney. They built a home which no longer stands. The place had previously been known as Hickory Crossing. Here her sons built a shop and began making wagons and carriages.

In the late 1850´s, when the railroad was being built from Charlotte to Statesville, a construction camp was established nearby by the railroad and the place became known to railroad people as "Troutman´s". Later it was to be Troutman.

The railroad actually put Troutman on the map in addition to giving it a name. A depot was built at Troutman when the railroad was completed into Statesville and the mixed trains stopped here for passengers and to load and unload freight.

Cornelius

The town of Cornelius, the second youngest of Mecklenburg County's six incorporated towns, was founded in 1893 but not incorporated until 1905. The Town's origin has been traced by many historians to a dispute over cotton weighing.

In the late 1800's, two thriving cotton firms located in Davidson disagreed on whether an official town cotton weigher should be appointed. After a heated election was held and legislation enacted, a town cotton weigher was hired and the firm which opposed the appointment decided to relocate much of its operations just south of the Davidson town limits.

Frequently after heavy rains, the road connecting Davidson and (soon-to-be) Cornelius would become impassible. The hill leading into Davidson would become so muddy that many cotton farmers found it safer and more convenient to conduct their business just south of Davidson in a small frame building. The success of the cotton purchasing business later inspired the owners to construct a cotton mill where raw cotton could be converted into cloth. The owners of the cotton firm lacked the needed money to make the idea of a cotton mill a reality, but they knew who could provide the financial backing. Joseph Benjamin Cornelius (1833-1914) supplied the needed investment and the mill was opened. Although the Town was originally incorporated as 'Liverpool', the Town's name was soon changed to Cornelius to honor J.B. Cornelius who was the principal stockholder in the cotton mill.

The damming of the Catawba River to create Lake Norman was as influential as the cotton industry to the town's development and growth. In 1963 Duke Power created Lake Norman and provided the area with recreational opportunities and a source of hydroelectric power. The formation of Lake Norman also provided the area with choice lakeside property.
