We may not be loaded with color like the North Georgia mountain area, yet...but it is finally beginning to feel like fall in Athens, GA! We went from spring like weather with highs in the mid 80's to waking up to 39 degree temperatures this morning and seeing much much needed rain over the past few days. The leaves are finally turning! Below is one of the prettiest I've seen yet this year (found by son & girlfriend a couple of days ago in the front yard).
This leaf is so pretty, it got to come inside for some more pictures!
In the strange juxaposition of things that happen with weather like ours in Athens, one of my rose bushes has bloomed 3 times this year! Below is what will surely be the last bloom of the season, shot during the pouring down rain a couple of nights ago.
Here's hoping for a fabulous fall!

Are you looking for pumpkins in Athens, Georgia? Consider purchasing yours at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church on Milledge Avenue near Five Points! The church uses profits from pumpkin sales to fund some great projects!
Last year we decided to make Pumpkin Picking & Carving a "Family Fun Day". So I corraled all the teenagers in the car and we picked out pumpkins, then came home for carving. There are some great templates available free on-line to choose your pumpkin pattern. Here are the ones we did last year:

The pictures below show just how much fun we all had carving pumpkins!

Try Hershey's templates for pumpkin carving or just google to locate just about anything you might ever want to put on a pumpkin! Have fun!

There is something about their sweet little faces that I just love.
Pansies call out to the heart.
Their appearance heralds my favorites seasons in Georgia...spring & fall.

Ok, I will admit I just love flowers and thankfully have a husband who will take care of them for me! Did you know that people who are considering buying a home will usually drive by their favorites two or three times and just look at the outside from the curb? Make the most of your home that is on the market by dressing it up with vibrant flowers, keeping the yards manicured and putting away anything that may detract from your home. A few fresh fixes include making sure that mailboxes and porch furniture are in good condition.
One of my favorite stores to browse for the perfect flat of pansies, or any other flowers for that matter is Chamar Flower & Gift Shop tucked away at 790 Gaines School Road, Athens, GA 30605 in East Athens. They also feature special gift items that will delight your family and friends.
If you're looking for lovely pansies or fabulous mums for this fall make sure you drop by Charmar's!

In just a few month, students at the Watkinsville, GA campus of Gainesville State College will begin to enjoy their multi purpose buildings. Right now parking is a little frustrating as much of the parking area is blocked off due to the construction, but everything should be back to normal by mid December.

Students have great activities to choose from coming this October, including a poetry reading by Speaker/Poet Gabriela Garcia-Medina, and a Hispanic Film Series. One of the planned features for the new multipurpose building is to be able to offer more activities to the student body.

So I'm driving along Highway 53 from Winder towards Interstate 85 for a quick run up to Gwinnett County and I see the cutest things!

It's scarecrows, LOTS and LOTS of scarecrows. I thought "Well, somebody got excited about decorating this fall". Then about a half a mile down the road I see this:

Now I'm starting to feel like maybe I'm in the "The Twilight Zone" or a Stephen King movie and I'm the last human left on Earth with a bunch of scarecrows! I'm getting a little more excited just a little further down the road:

And then, thankfully it all became clear!

The city of Hoschton, Georgia is hosting their Fall Festival on Friday & Saturday, September 26th & 27th, 2008 and they are having a Scarecrow Stampede to set a new Guinness World Record for the most scarecrows in one area!
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution they exceeded the goal: "Did Hoschton ever exceed its goal! According to preliminary counts, Hoschton had put up about 4,800 scarecrows. That's just about one for every person in Hoschton's 30548 ZIP code, the area eligible to show scarecrows."
An estimated 5000 visitors are expected to experience the fabulous Fall Festival featuring scarecrows, arts & crafts, games, rides and of course - food! So take a short hop over to Hoschton, Georgia and watch for me - I'll be one of the ones with a camera! Just about 30 minutes from Athens, GA - this should be on your list of things to do!

Want to see more scarecrows? I have 44 photos total - can you tell I was fascinated? :) Take a look at All About Athens, GA for the rest of them!
