Hours: Mon.-Sat. – 9am-6pm Sunday 12pm-6pm Sept. 30-Oct. 31 2011 Includes amusements for the kids, hay rides, kettle corn, animals and food, a giant jumping pillow which will cover a surface area that is 70 x 30 feet and the “Mount Pleasant” Hay Mountain and Slide Tower where hay bales and tube slides provide a “tower of fun” that is over a full two stories tall. There’s also the traditional features including an animated talking pumpkin, hay rides, petting farm, jump castles, the 8-acre Boone Hall Corn Maze.

Hay Days at St. Marys, GA October 8 - 31 2011 Celebrate fall in St. Marys Hay Days begins in St Marys with scarecrows and fall decorations taking over the downtown historic district for this annual three-week event. Make sure to visit the downtown area to look for your favorite scarecrows.    

Harvest Festival at Oatland Island Wildlife Center Saturday November 12 & Sunday November 13 Annual cane-grinding event. Old time music, cane boiling, butter-making, apple-pressing and cooking on the hearth and open fire. Hay rides, crafts and games, cane syrup and other festival food.

Oatland Island Wildlife Center - The Halloween Hike

5-9 p.m. each night This is a fun, safe, not-so-scary “Trick or Treat” event for young children. Walk with your trickster down our friendly forest trail to meet and greet our animal friends. Comfortable walking shoes and costumes are encouraged. Admission is $8.00 per child and $6 per adult. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The YMCA of Coastal Georgia: 22nd Annual Heart of Savannah 5K

Join the YMCA of Coastal Georgia for a Day in the Park on 24 Sept at 0800! Come for the race and stay for the big YMCA party! The race will start and finish in the northeast corner of the park on Gaston Street and wind around the park and then down Bull Street through Savannah's historic squares down to Johnson Square and back up Bull Street to the Park. There will also be a FREE kiddie ¼ mile race. This race is also the launch of Y Kids Run, a program designed to encourage a healthier future for kids in kindergarten-5th grade.

After the race, a YMCA style family party will be held with activities like Zumba in the park, Health Screenings, Inflatable’s for the kids and so much more! Bring the family; there will be something for everyone.

Registration is also available at any YMCA of Coastal GA branch and at Fleet Feet Sports. The race is $30 until 21 September or $35 from 21 September to Race Day. Day Trips from Savannah Part I

Military families stationed at Hunter Army Airfield (HAAF) or Fort Stewart looking for something to do when your loved ones return on redeployment? Are you having Holiday guests coming into the Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport and need some ideas for day trips to explore? Georgia’s neighboring state South Carolina offers a wide range of Entertainment and Leisure excursions.

Hilton Head Island just approximately 45 miles north of Savannah via I-95 (Interstate 95) is a product of many cultures, history and backgrounds. Dating back to 1521 when the Spanish left their mark on the Island to 1663 when Sir William Hilton claimed the land of the new world for England. By 1698 land grants resulted in large plantations mostly growing Indigo and the area of Hilton Head made a mark on the map.

The Coastal Georgia and South Carolina region is full of history. Below you find a list of some historic sites and museums in the Hilton Head Island area that are within an hours drive from the FT Stewart and Hunter Airfield area.

COASTAL DISCOVERY MUSEUM :

  • 100 William Hilton Parkway (HWY 278)

GULLAH HERITAGE TRAIL TOURS : Discovery Museum of Hilton Head

  • 70 Honey Horn Drive (North end of the Island)
  • A two-hour narrated travel through hidden paths of the subtropic traditional landscape of Hilton Head Island. Fourth generation Gullah Family members who relate first hand stories of traditional food ways, family life and the Gullah language, will guide you.
  • At halfway point you will have a 15-20 minute rest stop at one of the Public Beach accesses allowing for a casual stroll over a boardwalk to view the Atlantic Ocean and refresh.

INDIAN SHELL RING : Sea Pines Forest Preserve

  • 175 Greenwood Drive Hilton Head Island, SC 29928
  • The Indian Shell Ring, piled several feet above the ground, was used by Indians as a refuse heap.
  • This particular Indian Shell Ring was constructed 4,000 years ago; the remains include oysters, clams and mussel shells, together with the bones of deer, raccoons, bears, fish and even some nutshells.
  • It is on of only twenty Shell Rings sill in existence.
  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Some of the Indian Shell Rings were originally 10 feet high and 30 feet wide at the base. This one is 150 feet in diameter.


ROSE HILL PLANTATION :

  • 199 Rose Hill Way Bluffton, SC
  • Rose Hill Plantation features a Gothic Revival home, once part of Devil's Elbow Barony.
  • Granted to Sir John Colleton by King Charles II in 1718.
  • Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, thanks to the efforts of Iva Welton.
  • On April 12,1996, Rose Hill Plantation House was purchased by the Middleton White Foundation and has been restored as a private home.

ZION CEMENTRY & BAYNARD MAUSOLEUM :

  • Intersection of US 278 and Mathews Drive Hilton Head, SC (mile marker 6)
  • In 1786 Isaac Fripp and Captain John Stoney built The Hilton Head Island Episcopal Church of Ease of St. Luke’s Parish.
  • In 1834 the communion service, which is still in use, was imported from London.
  • The chapel was abandoned and destroyed in 1868.
  • Baynard mausoleum built in 1846, marks the location of the Chapel of Ease.
  • The mausoleum serves as the final resting place of those who fought in the Revolutionary War.
  • Sign erected by Hilton Head Historical Society.
