Live vs Silent Auctions

Live Auctions vs Silent Auctions

"Live auctions are the most effective way to sell your items or real estate for the highest prices possible."

Most of your auction attendees have more fun with the live auction vs the silent auction at a benefit event. However, in order to sell a lot of items for a benefit event in a short period of time and keep your audience captivated, a silent auction could be utilized. Real estate auctions that are conducted in a live format do much better than silent auctions or 5-day sales.

Benefit auctions should have no more than 15-20 items or 1 hour in the live auction portion. These should only consist of your highest ticket items. People are not attending a charity/benefit event to hear an auctioneer all night, however in order to capture their full attention for the big ticket items, a professional auctioneer is essential.

Silent auctions are ideal for charity/benefit events or real estate that have a strict time-frame and a lot of items to sell. Attendees can enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while they place silent bids on some of the lower to mid-range priced items, which can get them in the mood for the higher dollar items to be held later in the live auction.

If you are not holding a charity/benefit event and have more of a ballroom setting with many lots to sell, then the most effective way is by live auction. All-day events like prop auctions, memorabilia auctions, or any type of multi-item auction work best with a live auction event, because the silent auction format simply takes too long and does not keep the bidders' attention.

What are Professional Ringmen?

The Ringmens Corner... with Rick Werner

"What in the world are Professional Ringmen?"

Professional Ringmen is an auction term used to describe a person or persons who work the auction floor before, during and after the live auction. They work directly with the Auctioneer, your staff and your guests. They have received in depth training on all aspects of the auction process, are experienced in bid spotting and making guests feel comfortable to make just one more bid. They can assist with taking your event to the next level. Simply put, they help "Make it Happen".

The Professional Ringman's objective is 3 fold:

Prior to the Auction: Ringmen help "warm up" the audience; answering questions and making sure everyone is comfortable with the auction process; they do this with initiative, a genuine caring and a keen sense of humor... a perfect balance.

During the Auction: Ringmen become an extra set of eyes and ears for the auctioneer during the live auction process. Their communication link with the Auctioneer is solid and trusted. They are the auctioneer's "Right Hand". Ringmen bring an energy to the room that promotes excitement and fun; this increases the number of bids and ensures every one is having a great time at your event. They play a key role in bid spotting; are trained to spot bids in a split second and react immediately. That trained split second reaction is just one of the keys to a successful event. No missed bids. Sounds simple, but it really isn't.

Post Auction: There is nothing quite like a congratulatory handshake and a pat on the back for a job well done. The Ringmen provide the subtle reassurance to every winning bidder they significantly helped the cause. This is no small matter; it is genuine, gracious and complimentary.... this is huge.

Bottom line, Professional Ringmen are entertaining, respectful and add a nice touch of class to round out your event, just one more element to assure your event is an incredible success and will be the talk of the town. Once experienced, your guests will lead the message and let everyone know..."You must attend next the next event"

"We have volunteers for bid spotters, we don't need to spend the extra money"

· Be careful where you decide to "save money".

· Professional Ringmen are very cost effective, their presence can easily add 10%, 15% or more to your event bottom line.

· Professional Ringmen will work directly with your volunteers. The Ringmen will help instruct and guide your volunteers giving them inside tips and "how to" ensuring this will be a night to remember for your volunteers and your guests.

· We recommend 2 Ringmen for events with 150 to 250 guests. Under 150, we suggest a minimum of 1 Ringmen.

· Are 2 Ringmen, beyond your budget? Add one Professional Ringman to your volunteer staff, this will save you some money, but will add significant impact to your bottom line. Next year you will want to add another Ringman.

Hope this helps you with some behind the scenes insight of the auction process and allows you peace of mind with your decision. You are officially one of the few who understand what the word Ringmen means in the auction world and understand the value Ringmen bring to each and every auction event.
