An epidemic from SAD? (Standard American Diet)

09-02-09
Missy Aaron

Does this relate to Real Estate?? Does health-care reform? Maybe not directly, but indirectly. HEALTH relates to EVERYONE and EVERY profession, including our ability to do our job properly and our children's ability to attend school and learn efficiently...

In our office we were discussing today about the state of our society due to our diet. Here in Batesville, we have almost every fast-food restaurant known to man. We have convenience, but we don't have our HEALTH!

With the SAD (or Standard American Diet), every family is now afflicted
with blood sugar problems. Just look at the 5 Stages of Diabetes.

Be sure to check the solution to the problem from Carmel Aaron, Wellness Coach.

This one is also very helpful.

Stay Motivated! Have Fun!

Each office has it's normal spurts of activity, and our company, Coldwell Banker Choice Realty in Batesville, AR, is no exception. We have a fantastic team that strives to support and encourage each other. That in itself is a wonderful motivation factor.

However, at times, even the most dedicated agents have their slumps. So, during those times, our company makes a game of doing our job. For example, there are months that we have our 'Pizza Pizzazz' contest. We divide into teams, we have very simple rules. Each activity denotes a certain amount of points. So at the end of the month, the 'runner's up' (because we have no loosing teams) will spring for a pizza party!

This week we are playing the 24 Game. We meet via conference call each morning at 8:00 am for 24 minutes. We have 8 categories where we can up up to 24 points each, in a 24 hour period. We also have bonus points such as making goals, or blogging (can you tell I'm trying to earn my bonus points??:-) Each day we have a 'Daily Winner' who may receive a gift certificate or free coffee, then the 'Weekly Winner' will get something of greater value such as a gas card or Wal-mart gift card.

Ironically, these sort of motivational activities do wonders for our office. It's amazing that we will fall all over ourselves doing our job to get points, where we wouldn't just 'Get to Work' making Real Estate contacts! Plus the competition in the office is always fun and light hearted, and it always increases our production for the following weeks and months...which is an added Bonus!

THANK YOU!

03-03-09
Missy Aaron

You know, it's just a thought, but do we really say 'Thank You' enough today? Growing up, we were taught manners such as saying 'Please, Thank You, Yes/No Ma'am, Sir'. But have we gotten too busy for that?

The reason this is on my mind is because I want to say a great big THANK YOU to a lady named Donna Pratt with Continental Airlines. Recently my husband, Ronnie, and I were traveling back from our winter vacation when we had an unexpected delay which caused us to miss our connecting flight in Ft. Lauderdale. (OK, OK...it wasn't TOTALLY unexpected as I have never flown out of Mexico on time and without a few gate changes)

After landing in Florida, we rushed through customs--no kidding, we actually walked right through with no hitches!! And made it to our next flight 15 minutes before scheduled take-off. They had already closed the flight, however, and would not allow us to board as they would have to check our luggage. Actually had our flight not been delayed in Mexico, and had our connecting flight not changed from 4:32 to 4:14 we would have STILL made it...oh well!

So after a mad dash to collect baggage, go through customs check, re-enter, go up 3 levels in FTL airport and attemp to re-check, we were exhausted, totally out of breath, and I was shaking like a leaf as we darted to the counter (thinking we made our flight in time) to be told that they had closed the flight and wouldn't allow us to check in. At that time the lady behind the counter said "I'm sorry, there is NOTHING I can do to help you, you will just have to go to the Continental Counter and see if THEY have anything available. (we were flying Northwest)

Enter: Donna Pratt. The first thing she said with a big smile was, "Hello, how are you?" "Been better", I replied on the verge of tears. At that point Ms. Pratt just stopped what she was working on and looked at us and said, "come here and tell me about it." Now, mind you, this was NOT her problem, I wasn't even flying on her airlines. I told her my story as I tried to calm myself down and she asked for all my info, including my frequent flyer numbers. She took everything, called my ticketing company since we were using air-miles, had the points from our flight re-deposited, and searched for any availablity on other airlines, then had everything re-issued in a matter of minutes. She booked us on Delta (still not her responsiblity) and directed us to the proper are to catch the next flight out. We made it back to Memphis (with a detour in Atlanta) only 4 hours later than we had originally planned and back home to good ol' Batesville, Ar the following day.

Now to you, this may not seem like much, but Ms. Pratt had NO responsibility toward me at all. She took the initiative to take care of this situation. So I ask you (as I did my own agents), how could having the same attitude toward our clients, customers, friends or even strangers benefit me and my business, improve my life and even better yet those of others?

Thank you Donna!

Enjoy the Present!

We have all heard the saying that 'Today is a Gift, that's why they call it the Present'. I really got to have a good, long, hard look at these words this weekend. Please let me explain.

My Grandparents are 85 years old. They have always been very active and relatively healthy. My Grandpa was walking up to 8 miles/day until just recently and still keeps a PHENOMINAL garden in the spring and summer. My Grandmother also, until recently, continued to volunteer about 3 hours a day and swam in her pool seasonally. At this point in their lives Grandpa is having some heart problems and Grandma has developed Alzheimer's. I know this is to be expected because as Grandma just learned AGAIN, "WE'RE 85! When did that happen?" This is a shock she learns this each day plus she learns each day that her parents are no longer living, some of her other relatives and friends are gone as well, and that they are no longer living in their home, but an apartment attached to my Aunt and Uncle's house, among other Daily Newsflashes.

So, I drove the short distance from Batesville, Arkansas to Jonesboro, Arkansas and I spent the weekend with my Grands. They have an aide during the week, and we are trying to take turns 'enjoying our Grandparents company' on the weekends so as to give my Aunt and Uncle a much needed and deserved break.

I tell this to explain that my Mother is indeed having a TERRIBLE time with the eventuality of this situation. It's not that I blame her for this or am I trying to minimize the situation. I try to calm her down and help her to be realistic, but I must admit this probably isn't my strongest quality. This weekend my son, Tyler, joined me at my Grands and I have to say he really just enjoyed himself. THAT was the grandest present we could have given them. It wasn't a weekend spent mourning over the fact that this is a difficult situation, but it was a weekend spent thoroughly enjoying the people we love and reminiscing about the great times we had, and the friends we have enjoyed over the years. It was a weekend of watching Tyler soak in all their stories and laugh. It was a weekend of watching them soak in his youthful attention and admiration. This helped me explain to Mother on the way home: Just go and enjoy them! Quit being so consumed with this situation; Just go enjoy the present!
