Electrical Safety Tips For The Holidays

It is easy to get caught up in the holidays. Whether preparing to entertain guests, attempting to decorate your home and property, or employing a budget-conscious approach to holiday shopping, the intense and time-sensitive demands brought on by the holiday season can be all-consuming - often at the expense of safety.

As the excitement of the season sets in with decorative displays and festive celebrations, people are inadvertently exposed to greater risk of becoming the victim of a fire or electrical accident, such as shock and electrocution.

MJ Rooney Electrical Contracting would like to remind people to keep electrical safety in mind and follow these important safety tips when decorating for the holiday season:

1. Before decorating, read and follow the manufacturers' instructions concerning installation and maintenance of all decorative electrical products.

2. Indoors and out, use lights and other electrical decorations certified by a recognized independent testing laboratory such as UL, CSA, or ETL.

3. Outdoors, use lights and other electrical decorations certified for outdoor use.

4. Carefully inspect each decoration before plugging into an outlet. Cracked, frayed, loose or bare wires and loose connections may cause a serious electric shock or start a fire. Replace damaged items.

5. Always unplug an electrical decoration before replacing light bulbs or fuses.

6. Don't mount or support light strings in any way that might damage the cord's insulation. Never nail or staple light strings or extension cords.

7. Do not connect more than three light string sets together. Light strings with screw-in bulbs should have no more than 50 bulbs connected together.

8. Don't overload extension cords - they can overheat and start a fire.

9. Keep all outdoor extension cords and light strings clear of snow and standing water and well protected from weather.

10. Don't allow children or pets to play with electrical decorations. Even small light decorations can produce a deadly electric shock if they are misused.

11. Turn off all electrical decorations before leaving home or going to bed.

12. Plug outdoor electric lights and decorations into circuits protected by ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs).
