Best of the Twin Cities: Minnesota's Economy Then and Now.

Map of MN Furs, wheat, pine lumber, and high-grade iron ore were once the basis of Minnesota's economy. As these resources diminished, however, the state turned to wood pulp, dairy products, corn and soybeans, taconite, and manufacturing, often in such food-related industries as meat-packing, canning, and the processing of dairy products.

Minnesota's economy has transformed in the last 200 years to emphasize finished products and services. Perhaps the most significant characteristic of the economy is its diversity; the relative outputs of its business sectors closely match the United States as a whole. The economy of Minnesota had a gross domestic product of $234 billion in 2005. Thirty-six of the United States' top 1,000 publicly traded companies (by revenue in 2006) are headquartered in Minnesota, including Target, UnitedHealthcare Group, 3M, Medtronic, General Mills, U.S.Bankcorp, and Best Buy. The second-largest privately owned U.S. company, Cargill, is headquartered in Wayzata. The per capita income in 2005 was $37,290, the tenth-highest in the nation. The three-year median household income from 2002-2004 was $55,914, ranking fifth in the U.S. and first among the 36 states not on the Atlantic coast.

Forestry remains strong, including logging, pulpwood processing and paper production, and forest products manufacturing.

The manufacturing sector now includes technology and biomedical firms in addition to the older food processors and heavy industry. The nation's first indoor shopping mall was Edina's Southdale Center . This mall has udergone a significant remodel and addition to create a very modern and comfortable shopping atmosphere. The nation's largest indoor shopping center is Bloomington's Mall of America.

The state produces ethanol fuel and is the first to mandate its use, a 10% mix (E10) since 1997, and a 20% mix (E20) in 2013. There are more than 310 service stations supplying E85 fuel. A 2% biofuel blend has been required in diesel fuel since 2005.

In 2002, employment declined more rapidly than in the country as a whole because of the large share of Minnesota workers in sectors most affected by the national slowdown: manufacturing, information technology and airline industries.

Office vacancy rates in metropolitan areas increased from 12.2% in 2001 to 19.6% in 2002, above the national average of 16.5%. On the other hand, having escaped the drought conditions that afflicted many other states, corn and soybean harvests were large in 2002, and Minnesota growers were in a position to benefit from drought-induced higher prices for both crops. The dairy sector, however, faced historically low prices, increasing the number of dairy producers leaving the industry.

Minnesota's employers added 6,900 jobs in November 2007 according to figures released by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). The state unemployment rate fell to 4.4 percent, placing it three-tenths of a point below the national unemployment rate of 4.7 percent.

Throughout 2007, employers have added 2,566 jobs in Minnesota, which reflects an upward revision of October’s jobs by 400. The Minnesota job growth rate is 0.1 percent compared to the national rate of one percent.

As one of 12 regional Reserve Banks that serve as the nation’s central bank, the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis is responsible for making and carrying out monetary policy, supervising and regulating banks and bank holding companies, and providing financial services to depository institutions and the U.S. Treasury.

Minnesota's work force is well educated. Minnesota earned 13th place nationwide in the 2006-2007 Smartest States Rankings by Morgan Quitno Press. Rankings are based on 21 indicators that include student achievement and attendance, strong student-teacher relationship and high school drop-out rates.

Minnesota has the eighth highest percentage of people with college degrees or higher (33.5 percent) among all states, according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census (2006).

Today's FEATURED EVENT is Parade of Homes: Spring Preview.

Though many economists are warning that American economy headed for recession this year, the National Association of Realtors projects "economic growth, increasing existing-home sales, and improving housing demand for 2008" in its latest Housing Forecast, released Thursday, February 7,2008. NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun believes the housing market has been through the worst, and estimates that existing-home sales will start 2008 at an annual rate of 4.9 million, before increasing to an annual rate of 5.8 million in the second half of the year.

Regarding the new home sales, they will continue to decline in 2008 before they will start rising in 2009. This will allow for selling off the access inventory. Global Insight Chief U.S. Economist Nigel Gault says "new-home starts will hit bottom at a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 850,000 starts in the middle of 2008".

However, if you are in the market for a new home, the pricing and selection couldn't be better. Check the homes available by prices and location by going to http://www.paradeofhomes.org/index.aspx

The Parade of Homes: Spring Preview goes on through March 16, 2008

Market is starting to move!

I'm not sure if this activity is here to stay but here's what happened yesterday (Sunday) : phones were ringing "off the hook" yesterday at our office with appointment requests and a couple of agents had several visitors at their open houses. My website has showed increased traffic in the last week, triple that of the week before!

I'm not sure what that means but I like it! Let's keep it going!

  • How many homes will attract serious buyers?
  • How many contracts will last through the inspection contingency?
  • How many buyers will get "cold feet" and back out of the contact?
  • How many sellers will give up and stay put?
  • How many sellers are facing financial difficulties and have to sell no matter what the cost?
