Local Realty Company to Offer Online-Only Auctions
A local auction company is attempting to reach a wider audience by offering online-only auctions. “This is going to make it more convenient for our bidders to bid from the comfort of their homes,” said Carl Montgomery, auction manager of Comas Montgomery Realty & Auction Co. Comas Montgomery is holding the auctions on its Web site at www.comasmontgomery.com, using its own in-house online auction software. Montgomery said using its own software keeps the company from having to charge bidders additional fees. With the continued popularity of online auctions as eBay and Live Auction, Comas Montgomery is planning to hold several online auctions in the upcoming months for both personal property and real estate. “It will never replace the traditional auction,” Montgomery said. “It is another tool that our company is able to offer.” Comas Montgomery is a member of the MarkNet Alliance, a network of 32 auction companies, which gives the company nationwide marketing resources to compete with the big name auction sites, he said. Year to date, MarkNet companies have sold more than $40 million worth of merchandise online. Montgomery said online auctions are marketed and handled the same way as a live auction, which includes the opportunity to view property before bidding. Also, if a person bids in the last 10 minutes of the online auction, the auction is extended by 10 minutes. The winning bidder pays for items when they pick them up. Montgomery said auction bidders who aren’t computer savvy are welcome to come to the Comas Montgomery office at 817 S. Church St. to bid on online auctions. Comas Montgomery’s first online-only auction began Dec. 19. Just four days into the auction, more than 1,406 bids were placed. The personal estate auction features a luxury RV, work trucks and other vehicles, a bulldozer, hand tools, jet skis and boats. Bidding ends Jan. 6.
