Houlton Maine International Airport ? Noooo...You Don't Fly In On Jumbo Jets.

houlton international airport, houlton maine, aroostook, border, mooers realty, relocation

Years ago before deregulation in the airline industry, planes from Northeast and other lines catered to and service little towns like Houlton Maine.

The government helped support the airline to these smaller off the beaten path areas but from a practical standpoint, you do not have 757 or L 1011's full of passengers coming into Houlton Maine eight times a day.  That is why it is a great place to live, not tons of people and the ones we have are friendly, caring and helpful! During World War Two the airport in Houlton Maine was very much a part of the war effort. (See earlier blog http://activerain.com/blogsview/67360/Houlton-Maine-farmer-helps about farmers hauling war planes with chains into New Brunswick Canada to help in the War II effort from Houlton International Airport)  Even if there are not hourly runs of planes in and out like some airport, you can bring you private plane in, you can charter Terry Larson the local Fix Based Operator to shuttle you, York Ford rents cars and we have local Houlton Taxi to pick you up to get you to a number of clean, neat hotels. So when someone asks me if you can fly into Houlton Maine, I don't automatically think no, and just the thought of large commerical jets.  I think sure..because lots of folks have planes and their own license, and with a little planning smaller private charters can work around the schedule. Details on the airport in Houlton Maine from the FAA below...known as KHUL.  If you were a pilot, you would want to know about radio homing frequencies, runway length, and many other houlton maine, border crossing, airport, mooers realtydetails before you hop into your Piper Cub and point it north. HIA is on the US / Canadian border.

Meduxnekeag River Canoe Race in Houlton Maine Started By Ricker College!

maine canoe race, houlton maine, meduxnekeag river

The first week of May, the annual Meduxnekeag River Canoe Race with lots of water volume this year will happen in Houlton Maine.

Heavier than normal snows mean no shortage of water for the race in Aroostook County. Paddlers from around New England and Atlantic Canada take canoes, kayaks, boats and rafts down the the river named by local Maliseet Indians. "Meduxnekeag" means rocks at its mouth.  Past race Chairman Peter Blood told me today that in the beginng he wondered why there were a number coolers with lively party canoers celebrating spring. He felt the tradition may have been because college kids were behind the intial races.  The Houlton Rotary Club took over the race rather than see it not happen as new blood to coordinate the race was needed.  Then a local group including Peter Blood, now a retired local teacher with his co-chair Clint Cushman did a superb job getting the race organized.  This year's chairmen are Todd Williard and Malcolm Nesbitt.

Different years the race has started and ended in different spots usually depending on the water levels and ease for launch and exit from the river.  Recently the race has finished at the Highland Avenue and River Street corner where there is a paved parking lot, and launch ramp to make getting off the river easier.  The race offers different classes and age groups.  There are recreational family paddlers and black belt kayakers that do the circuit and are hoping to win their division. I snapped this image from the Highland Avenue bridge in Houlton a few years ago where the race ends nowadays. In the past, the race ended at the covered bridge known as Watson Bridge in Littleton where the Rotary Club had a snack booth and hot food to feed hungry paddlers. Now there is a breakfast with safety briefing and the rules to have a fun, spirited race to celebrate spring after hibernating for some over the winter months.
