A new indoor football team in Greenville will kick off next year. It was announced at at 2 p.m. at the Bi-Lo Center.
Since 1998, four professional sports teams have called the Bi-Lo Center home. One was the Carolina Rhinos, a member of the arenafootball2 league, which played from 2000-02.
The team with the longest tenure was the Greenville Grrrowl, an ECHL hockey team that took the ice in 1998. Under former owner Carl Scheer, the team faced bankruptcy at the end of the 2004-05 season. Local investors attempted to salvage the franchise, but they folded after the 2005-06 season.
Thornhill said the Bi-Lo Center has been actively recruiting a team owner that is "well capitalized" and has "realistic expectations." Unlike the Grrrowl, where paying off building bond debts was closely tied to the success of the franchise, this deal is not tied to operations.
The Greenville Groove, one of the National Basketball Development League's inaugural teams, played at the Bi-Lo Center from 2001-03.
