Is Real Estate Having a Fire Sale?

Contrary to popular belief by the general media, real estate on the Emerald Coast is not having a fire sale!! While the national media will have us all believe that "low ball" offers are saving homes from sure foreclosure, I am seeing a fair number of homes that are moving briskly. Price sells homes--if it is priced right, there is a buyer!! While speculation and investment are severely curtailed given the current economic situation throughout the country and the world, there are still businesses hiring and people moving to new places of work. Beach Renourishment--Necessary for All Floridians

For everyone who lives in Florida, our economy is driven by the beautiful beaches and water that attract so many tourists and visitors to our area. As in Hawaii and most other states in the Union, the beach is public property to be maintained and supported for the benefit of everyone. Furthermore, it is against the law of the State of Florida to use public money for private benefit. So, if we are to save the coastline and prevent all the gulf front homes from washing into the Gulf of Mexico, beach renourishment at public expense is a necessity. Therefore, the beaches in Florida need to remain the public domain for our economic viability and our own personal enjoyment!! Anyone who wrote a deed giving beach to private homeowners should be paying in court for the fraud that was committed.

Okaloosa School District Top Score on FCAT

The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) Norm-Referenced Test (NRT) scores were released to districts this week. Okaloosa County ranked first place in both math and reading in grades 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Grade 6 students ranked second place in math and reading.

This is truly an outstanding performance by all students across every grade and all teachers in every school. The NRT provides information on student performance based on nationwide standardization. It is a nationally normed test which is an indicator of academic standing not only in the state of Florida, but also across the nation.

The current focus on improving student achievement in middle and high school is paying off. Our secondary schools have set high expectations and increased rigor in order to prepare students for post-secondary education and high wage/high demand careers. Across the nation, students in middle and high school tend to lose proficiency in math and reading, yet our secondary students are excelling according to the NRT scores.

Okaloosa County middle school students scored significantly higher on FCAT reading than other districts in the state of Florida: 14 percentile points for grade 6, 13 percentile points for grade 7 and 12 percentile points for grade 8. Every middle school in Okaloosa County improved in 7th grade reading and 6th grade math. Substantial improvement was noted at Richbourg, Pryor, Lewis, Liza Jackson, and Laurel Hill.

Congratulations to Niceville High School and OWC Collegiate High School for leading the way in achievement in 9th and 10th grade reading and math. Every high school improved in FCAT reading; Laurel Hill 10th graders improved in both reading and math.
