The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) Norm-Referenced Test (NRT) scores were released to districts this week. Okaloosa County ranked first place in both math and reading in grades 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Grade 6 students ranked second place in math and reading.
This is truly an outstanding performance by all students across every grade and all teachers in every school. The NRT provides information on student performance based on nationwide standardization. It is a nationally normed test which is an indicator of academic standing not only in the state of Florida, but also across the nation.
The current focus on improving student achievement in middle and high school is paying off. Our secondary schools have set high expectations and increased rigor in order to prepare students for post-secondary education and high wage/high demand careers. Across the nation, students in middle and high school tend to lose proficiency in math and reading, yet our secondary students are excelling according to the NRT scores.
Okaloosa County middle school students scored significantly higher on FCAT reading than other districts in the state of Florida: 14 percentile points for grade 6, 13 percentile points for grade 7 and 12 percentile points for grade 8. Every middle school in Okaloosa County improved in 7th grade reading and 6th grade math. Substantial improvement was noted at Richbourg, Pryor, Lewis, Liza Jackson, and Laurel Hill.
Congratulations to Niceville High School and OWC Collegiate High School for leading the way in achievement in 9th and 10th grade reading and math. Every high school improved in FCAT reading; Laurel Hill 10th graders improved in both reading and math.
