For over 20 years my family and I have had the great pleasure of calling the Hampton Roads area of Southeast Virginia our home. Until coming to this area, I had never lived anywhere more than 7 to 8 years at a time due to work commitments.

What attracted me to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Chesapeake/Portsmouth/Suffolk/Hampton/Newport News/Williamsburg area was its variety of suburban, urban and rural living options. As well as the moderate temperatures, perpetual green-ness and beaches.

You can drive almost anywhere in Hampton Roads within 20 minutes, or so and it's nice to live below the frost-line. We had lived in Colorado, prior to our move south, and were looking for a break from snow storms and icy roads. While this area enjoys the effects of the four seasons, we have green lawns and trees for most of the year, and snow is a rarity. It's a great place to raise a family and I can't forget to mention the "Southern Hospitality". People seem to be more polite and aren't afraid to engage in friendly conversation, unlike some other parts of the U.S. In fact, some of our cities have been chosen from throughout the country as "Best Places" to live and establish businesses.

When it comes to year-round events for the whole family, it's hard to beat the Hampton Roads area! We have world-class tourist sites like Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg, as well as festivals and events with every type of music and food imaginable. The fun is multiplied by the number of cities that make up our area and are within driving distance. And we must not forget our great museums, nature preserves and boardwalks.
