Angel Tree Children Ministry

when mom and dad are in prison the children are so sad, lonely and scared

When mom and dad are in prison, what happens to the children?

Angel Tree Ministry is a non profit organization trying to infuse hope where there is none. They take these kids camping, teach them valuable skills and cater to their spiritual and emotional well being.

Here is a message from Rev. Donna Phelps and her husband Garry:

Yes! It's that time of year again and right now we have 568 kids waiting to see if they will be remembered as one of the Angel Tree Children Ministry.

When Mom or Dad is in prison, it's the innocent children who do hard time. But you can let them know they aren't forgotten. You can give the child of a prisoner the joy of Christmas this year. Each gift is given as though it is from the incarcerated parent. In addition, every child also receives an age-appropriate presentation of the Gospel message--the true meaning of Christmas. And when Christmas is over, you'll enjoy opportunities to continue to minister to these families year-round.

We ask you to please invite them to your church & pray for these needy families. Right now we need volunteers to: buy and wrap gifts, to purchase gift cards of any kind, donations of stockings, candies, socks, gloves, coloring books, DVD's, etc...and monetary donations to sponsor Angel Tree events. We ask you to please pray about this tremendous need, and remember: what if it were your child? Please try and see them through the eyes of Jesus. To find out how wonderful it feels to "welcome the children" in Jesus’ name, just call us at 910-842-9418.

At present there are over 32,000 children of prisoners across North & South Carolina. Let's not let any be left out. We want to thank these individuals in advance for their hearts of compassion and for adopting children.

They Wear Hats, Berets, Scarves and… Body Hair?!?!

Picture this: a sunny afternoon at the Zoo. The young couple holding hands decides to take a break from it all and sit down on a bench under the trees. She lays her head on his lap and stretches her arms, revealing…

“What? What’s THAT?” he exclaims pointing to her armpits.

“What do you mean”, she innocently asks, fluttering her eyes.

“That, that”, he maintains, vehemently pointing to her armpits.

“You mean this”, she says touching the hair under her arm.

“Yes, THAT! You have hair under your arms” he says incredulously.

“Of course I do. Don’t you?”

That was many years ago. The girl was European and the date was her first boyfriend, an American boy. That’s how she learnt that in America girls are not supposed to grow hair under their armpits. …Or on their legs… or on their… never mind!

For those of you who travel the World, you have some stories to tell, I’m sure - so please share them with us! Here are my observations: they wax in Spain, but the rest of Europe typically embraces hair under the armpits for both genders. Especially in Germany and France, where women are tres chic, dressed in the latest fashions. They wear hats, berets, scarves and… body hair?!?!

Thinking about getting a Divorce? Not in this Market!

divorce during hard economic times

2009 may go down as the year with the least divorce filings in recent history.

Nationwide, the number of divorce filings is down substantially. When the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers polled its 1,600 members, nearly 40 percent said that filings were down by 40 percent. "There is a lot of fear, so people are staying put," says Gary Nickelson, president of the Academy. "People look at their assets and their liquidity, and they realize they don't have any."

During these hard times many couples are opting to postpone getting divorced for obvious economic reasons. In the past, the proceeds from the sale of the marital home was a solution to many post-divorce cash flow issues, including down payments for new homes, getting a new car and paying the lawyers and experts in a case.

With the decline in property values, many people are facing situations with negative equity or much less equity to divide, so many just stay put and wait for the market to turn.

During the Great Depression divorce rates dropped sharply, but domestic violence rates went up. Unfortunately, the statistics for 2009 reveal similar trends.

It’s hard to make marriage work during the best economic times, but when job losses, home losses and financial upheaval hit, marriages are severely impacted. Still, couples are staying together. They can't afford the attorney fees. Child support is impossible to pay. Having two homes is unreasonable in a time when they can barely afford one home together. So they decide to stay together. As one observer put it: “it’s like sleeping with the enemy”…

The Surprising Science of Motivation

The new Business Operating System is based on three things:

1. Autonomy: The urge to direct our own lives.

2. Mastery: The desire to get better and better at something that matters.

3. Purpose: The yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves.

The 20% rule Google employs: Engineers can work on anything they want for 20% of the time. Almost half of the all the new Google products were birthed during this 20% time.

There is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does. The typical Rewards programs 20th century businesses employ (the carrots and sticks philosophy) work, but only in a surprisingly narrow band of circumstances. The secret to motivating people to produce lies in the unseen intrinsic drive to do things because they matter.

There is a great business lesson here. I hope you take the time to watch this important video. Your company’s future productivity may hinge on it.
