Are your photos safe on Facebook?

For the most part. Third party advertisers can use the pictures you post on Facebook without your permission! I know I wouldn’t want my photos endorsing a product, person or behavior without my consent. Would you?

Here’s the fine print:

“Facebook occasionally pairs advertisements with relevant social actions from a user's friends to create Facebook Ads. Facebook Ads make advertisements more interesting and more tailored to you and your friends. These respect all privacy rules. You may opt out of appearing in your friends' Facebook Ads below.”

So here’s where you find “BELOW”

facebook ad privacy photos

Now for your 123 get rid of it!

1- Select News Feeds and Wall/ads tab

2- Choose NO ONE from the drop down menu (Alicia Keys is genius!)

3- Save your changes

Now you’re safe…or are you?

Remember this shocking facebook event?

While you’re at it, take a look at your other privacy settings:

Profile Control who can see information on your profile page.

Search Control who can search for you, what they can see, and how they can contact you.

News Feed and Wall Control what Recent Activity is visible on your profile and in your friends' home pages.

Applications Control what information is available to applications you use on Facebook.

Hope this FYI helps Facebook Your Identity only the way you want it and with NO surprises.

So... you wanna tweet your Flickr...?

Flickr and twitter

Did you know you can actually upload directly to Flickr and Twitter simultaneously?

You can also tweet a photo that is already on Flickr using a special short Flic.kr URL?

Did you know it is a LOT of fun?

Let's set it up!

STEP ONE (NKOTB tone LOL) Select Twitter from the add a blog page (oh yeah, you can add your BLOG here, too...I bet you did NOT know that either, did you?

Flickr and twitter

STEP TWO: Authorize posting to Twitter by clicking ALLOW (you've done this before if you've read my sharing post).

You'll be provided with a "2twitter" e-mail address so you can Tweet...isn't that Tweet?!

"Hurray! You're ready to tweet" said my Flickr and then added:

"From your mobile device, just send a photo or video to the 2Twitter address. The Subject line of the message will be both the Flickr title and the tweet. You have 116 characters to tweet, the rest will be the URL.

From Flickr, just use the "Blog this" button on a photo page when available. Flickr members can chose to turn off "Blog this" on their photos, so you may not always see it."

I just have to say.. Tweet! Tweet me! Tweet this! Tweet now! Tweet later! Flickr my Tweet! Tweet my Flickr!... I gotta go get breakfast!

I'm on the market; are YOU a great catch?

While it may sound like I’m looking for a date or an eligible bachelor, I’m simply sharing an interesting statement I stumbled upon (wink) on none other than the famous online dating site e-harmony.com:

“Profile pictures can tell your story. If done well, your profile pictures can act as a photo album of your life, illustrating the different layers that make you such a great catch.”

Background Story:

Elayna Fernandez - Founder of Positive Mommies NetworkI was in the midst of answering a question to a fellow ActiveRainer girlfriend. She was puzzled as to keeping her profile picture up and wished to find out whether I had gotten any creepy messages over my profile picture. I answered with the utmost honesty: “Few comments about my smile but from both men and women, and very respectfully stated, I must add. You should definitely have a profile picture up because whether you are trying to connect with possible partners or prospect clients, they would love to know who you truly are and what is important to you. You become relatable to them as a human being. People want to do business with real people (real people they know, like, trust and have a product/service that makes THEIR lives easier).”

Amusingly, I was searching for an article on profile picture tips and e-harmony.com came up (no, I did not sign up for it LOL). It really made me think how social media is a lot like online dating. After all, I am the one to always ask the “if people search for a significant other online, don’t you think they’d search for a –fill in the blank with desired profession?” question to the still skeptic “beings” out there. This really gets them thinking.

So, it’s time to follow the e-harmony.com advice to “let your personality shine, underscore your interests and give a glimpse into your life”.

1. When your prospect is searching online, will you stand out as a great catch?

2. Will you be the lucky one to “take them out”?

3. Will they be interested enough to want to be in a “relationship” with you?

When I moved to the United States, the dating system was very foreign to me. In our cultures, the boy comes to your house and taking you out happens after your mom and dad know everything there is to know about him AND his family, and there is a wedding date set (well, it’s not that bad LOL). So my point is, even though I am a single-working-devoted mom and don’t date, it makes sense to compare the selling process is a lot like American dating.

1. You say hi and get their name

2. You get their e-mail address or phone number

3. You go out for hot chocolate (I don’t drink coffee LOL) and you listen to what they’re looking for, and then tell them how you can be “IT”

4. Both develop a trusting, fun and mutually beneficial relationship

5. The relationship continues as long as it keeps meeting each side’s needs

Online, the selling process starts with that very picture on your social media profile or in your website’s bio section.

While some of the e-harmony.com tips don’t really apply to finding your ideal customer online (well, at least that’s true for me), I like that they were talking about simplicity, scenery, lighting, eye contact and, yes, honesty – this last one is often compromised by “Everyone knows this picture of me, even if it’s 15 years old, it’s my personal branding” (Elayna, very ladylike clears her throat).

Seth Godin has some recommendations to make your profile pictures improve your brand and make a favorable good impression. These are my fabulous favorite four:

1. Have a professional take your picture

2. Use a white or neutral background

3. Go solo

4. Crop useless elements out of your picture

Remember my saying “Personality is the ultimate marketing plan”. Are you a “great catch”? Say it with a picture.

Become a “Do-er”: Pop it out, fill it out, and cross out!

I teach classes at the local Adult Community Program (Barron Collier High School Naples FL). I teach Web Design on Dreamweaver, Blogging and Social Media.

Your access to the REAL cool stuff!

gmail tasks gmail marketing gmail tools elayna fernandezI tell all my students – and everyone I come in contact with, for that matter – that the first step to online marketing success is to register for a Google Account AKA have an @Gmail address.

From Blogger to YouTube to Google Analytics, a Google Account will grant you access to tools that simplify your life and make you savvy in easy steps.

I'm a Gmail Do-er Now!

gmail tasks gmail marketing gmail tools elayna fernandezThe newest feature I adore is TASKS. A cool system that allows you to have a To-Do list in front of you while you’re Gmail-ing (Gmailing is e-mailing supersized: chat, audio, video, e-mail, calendar, document sharing, etc.).

How do you enter a new task?

Just click in an empty part of your list and start typing. You don’t even have to click a button to save it. When you hit Return, a new task field is generated for you to add more tasks.

This tool allows you to become more productive and to actually get your stuff done. Becoming a Gmail do-er doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Look at my task list! (of course, I just wrote the fun stuff, but I’m adding work items IRL).

The coolest thing for me is to know I can convert emails into tasks. So let’s say you have a do-er Gmail message, then you select it (or them) and go to More Actions | Add to Tasks…and Voila! I can’t wait to get a real message so I can convert it over. Wait…I think it’s funner when it’s all play. Of course it doesn’t support the lifestyle on my “Play list”.

If you don’t have a Gmail account, become a Do-er. Once you do that, you’ll be able to see your Tasks on the left hand side where you’ll find your Inbox, Trash, Sent Items and the like.

Pop your Gmail Tasks menu out, fill in our tasks, and cross the tasks out as you do’em! Beautiful, I tell you…just, beautiful.

Are you still reading this? Good, that means I’m interesting. Now go become a G-mail do-er and get back to me to let me know how it’s working out.

Be postive and you’ll be powerful!
