January 23rd, 1556 was the day of what is believed to be the worst loss of human life from any one volcano. Records were not that accurate, but it is estimated that as many as 830,000 people died as a result of the Shaanxi Province earthquake in China.

Hello Everyone! This is your friend Nate Rowe the realtor in Richmond VA representing homes in Richmond VA and homes in Henrico County VA. I love Richmond VA real estate.
Today, I wanted to share a very dangerous situation that I walked up to this past Wednesday. I know most of you would never do anything like this, but I am posting this experience just in case it has crossed your mind.
One of my good friends, who's also one of my "A" clients and me went to look at two homes yesterday. The first was in Mechanicsville, VA, which is about 20 minutes outside of Richmond. The home was very dated and we left quickly and decided to go grab some lunch. We went to eat at Panera Bread in Henrico County which is just to the west of Richmond. Most people around here just call it the "West End". After a great lunch, we headed to our second and final showing of the day.
Arriving at our second showing, a short sale, we were actually pleased with the look of the home. There were some qualities of the yard that we did not like but other than that, it was cute. I retrieved the key out of the lockbox and started to open the door......that's when it hit me. My eyes started to burn and my chest started to get tight. My friend asked "WHAT'S THAT SMELL". I yelled "RUN". You guessed it, it was a gas leak. Not only could we smell it, we could hear the gas leaking inside (I was in construction for many years before I got into real estate and know the difference between a little gas and the house getting ready to explode). I closed the door and told her that we needed to move our cars out of the driveway. I then called the fire dept. and told them that I would wait in the street until they arrived. Next, I placed a call to the listing agent's cell phone and left him a message telling him that the fire dept. was on the way and it smelled like the whole house was filled with gas.
The fire dept. got there pretty quickly and I told them what I smelled and explained that I was trying to show the home before I smelled the gas. One fire fighter went to the door with a meter and he slowly cracked the door and leaned his head in. He then quickly jerked back and signaled to the other firefighters that there was a serious leak. They made sure the gas was off to the home and started to do their thing. In the meantime, the listing agent called me back and instead of thanking me for looking out for him and his clients, he started to call me a liar and belittle what I had done. "Why did you call the fire dept., I was just there a little bit ago and I know it does not smell like gas" were the words I heard instead of a simple "thank you, I will be right there". I told him he needed to learn some manners and for him to get out to the home now to deal with it and I hung up.
I noticed the fire fighters setting a propane tank attached to what looked like a turkey deep fryer burner (with no pot or turkey) on the sidewalk. I then saw someone pull up and walk up to where the firefighters were, so I walked over. The listing agent asked if I was a police officer (I get that a lot) and instead of answering, I asked if he was with the fire dept. and he admitted that he was the listing agent. I then told him that I was the agent that could have been killed showing his listing. I told him one more time that instead of calling someone a liar when they try to look out for you, you need to learn some manners, be a man and thank someone. At this time one of the firefighters looked at me and said "hey bud, I am not sure who was stupid enough to put that thing in this home". Going from cocky to slumping at the shoulders, the listing agent said that he was the one that put the propane burner in the home so the pipes wouldn't freeze. HE PUT A PROPANE HEATER IN HIS CLIENTS HOME! I CANNOT BELIEVE IT! CAN YOU SAY HUGE LAWSUIT! The fire fighter then asked him if he knew that propane heaters put out carbon monoxide and he answered yes. He was talking to the fire fighter in the same manner as me saying that "it's not a big deal, I was just heating the pipes", wrong thing to say to a firefighter. The fire fighter told him that we could have of course gotten blown up from the gas because the flame was not lit and even if it was, we could have passed out and died because of the carbon monoxide. The listing agent probably felt very small when the fireman told him "since it doesn't seem to be a big deal to you, I will let you explain it to the Fire Marshall". He kept trying to small talk it and the firefighter told him" whatever man" and got on the radio. I told the firemen thanks and I left. I wonder what the Fire Marshall will say. I am sure this guy hasn't heard the end of this.
I wanted to share this because you never know what you are going to walk into. There are some people out there that just don't think. You need to make sure you are always ready and careful and please try to understand the dangers before you attempt something.
A little note to my friend that was with me: Thank you for a wonderful day. You are a great friend and I enjoy it every time we get together, even if we almost get blown off the face of the earth.

Queen Victoria of Great Britain ascended to the throne at the age of 18 in 1837. She reigned over the vast British Empire for nearly 64 years, the longest serving Monarch in the United Kingdoms history. The Victorian Era is considered by most as the golden age of British history. ‘Victorian' architecture, furniture, and clothing all refer to her and the time in which she was Queen. She died on January 22, 1901.

On January 21st, 1954 the USS Nautilus was launched and so was the era of nuclear submarine power. Over the next several years Nautilus rewrote the record books for submarine speed and distance benchmarks. For the first time in submarine history, a ship was able to go to the absolute North Pole (diesel powered submarines were not capable of staying submerged long enough to accomplish this). Nautilus logged about 500,000 miles in its 25 year long career.

John Marshall was nominated for the Supreme Court on January 20th 1801. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on the 27th, and took office on February 4th of the same year. He served on the court until his death in 1835, the longest serving judge in Supreme Court history. His former home at 818 E. Marshall St. in Richmond was a museum to his honor until recently. I understand it is being turned into condominiums.
