Article from The Richardson Today February 2009.

Beginning March 5, the Richardson Fire Department will conduct its 14th Citizens Fire Academy (CFA) class. The purpose of the CFA class is to make citizens aware of the services and operations of the Richardson Fire Department; to increase fire and life safety awareness and promote a positive image of the department to the community.

The intent of the CFA classes is not to train citizen to become firefighters, rather, it's an opportunity to experience first hand what duties and responsibilities firefighters have.

The Citizen Fire Academy is a 10-week program open to persons 18 and older who either live or work in the City of Richardson. The 10-week class meets one night a week for three hours at the Fire Department Training Center located at 2600 Owens Blvd. Academy participants will receive an insider's view of the vast services the Fire Department provides. Each academy participant is allowed to spend time at fire stations and ride on the fire engines to emergency calls.

US Postal Service Facing Servere Deficit

I was reading the USA Today over breakfast this morning and on the cover is an article about how the US Postal Service is needing to find ways to save cash and to keep operating.

Now I understand that with today's technology that using the post office to send letter's will decline, but shouldn't the bigger picture be how the US Post Office is functioning? We need to look at it in the terms that it is a business. The US Postal Service according to the USA Today's article, "With 650,000 workers, the Postal Service is the USA's third-largest employer, after Wal-Mart and the Defense Department. It has the nation's biggest vehicle fleet — and high gas prices cost it $500 million last year."

And since it is a government organization of course layoff's are rare "Union contracts make layoffs rare. Raises are automatic. Labor costs have been reduced through early retirement packages and cutting back hours. The Postal Service has trimmed its workforce by 120,000 since 2002. It wants to cut 100 million work hours this year. The average unionized postal worker made $66,929 in wages and benefits in 2008, the Postal Service says." (USA Today February 3, 2009 Edition).

The average unionized worker in 2008 made $66,929 in wages and benefits. Does anyone think that these wages are bit inflated? Should the Postmaster try to get the union to reduce their wages? What would be best for the USPS and for us Americans?

If you were in charge of the USPS how would you try to change things in order to make it breakeven or profitable?

1/28/2009 North Dallas Iced Over! www.NickGood.com

I woke up this morning bright and early around 5:15 to a driveway covered in about an inch of ice! I am the sane one in the family that nornally would not get out in this type of weather, but my wife, who is a Trauma ICU nurse has to go in no matter what (sick people don't stop getting sick just because Dallas shuts down due to ice!).

So after ten minutes of working to get the car door open, we get it started so I can turn on the window defrosters. We head out onto 75 around 6 AM and there were quite a few people on the road... Mostly people who were driving to fast or following too close (do people not understand that it takes a lot further distance to stop when you have ice on the ground?).

What is normally a 20-25 minute drive from Richardson to Methodist Hospital took us about an hour to get there...but we made there and I made back unharmed from the ice (yay!). So to anyone going venturing out on the roads today please use common sense when driving!
