Hollis, New Hampshire - Beaver Brook Annual Fall Festival

 Beaver Brook Association

One of my favorite events this time of year is the Beaver Brook Association Fall Festival.  This year marks the 28th annual festival.

The mission of the fall nature festival is to get people to enjoy nature.  There are activities to emphasize the importance of wildlife and environmental conservation as well.

art show

The theme of the art and photography show is Nature.  There is no limitation on who can submit art...entrties are submitted from kids to professionals.

  •  When:  September 27-28
  •  Time:   12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  •  Where: Maple Hill Farm, 117 Ridge Road, in Hollis New Hampshire.

You won't want to miss the two live animal shows.  I was in awe and amazed by these shows.  One live animal show is a presentation by the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center on local wildlife.  Live animals such as turtles and porcupines are featured.

The other live animal show highlights North American Birds of Prey which is presented by Wingmasters.  At the show I saw birds such as eagles and hawks and I got a couple of great pictures. birds of Prey

The Beaver Brook Fall festival has something for the entire family.  Visitors from New Hampshire and beyond make it a point to attend.  Last year there were over 1200 attendees!  You can also enjoy:

  • Live Music
  • Nature Crafts designed for Kids
  • Dried herbs and flower arrangements
  • Baked goods and Cider
  • Guided hikes on trails and beautiful gardens
  • Self-guided pumpkin trail
  • Farmer's Market and local fruits and vegetables

Short History of Beaver Brook Association

In 1964 the Beaver Brook Association was founded by Hollis P. Nichols and Jeffrey P. Smith, both of Hollis, New Hampshire. They began with 12 acres of land.  Their vision was to foster land stewardship awareness and encourage a sense of appreciation for the natural world. The State of New Hampshire chartered Beaver Brook Association as an educational non-profit organization.

beaver brook trailsCurrently there are over 2,000 acres located in Hollis, Brookline, and Milford, New Hampshire.   Hiking, horseback riding, bird watching, biking and many other activities are enjoyed by families on 35 miles of trails.  The trails are carefully mapped and designated for activities that will have the least impact on the particular area.

If you would like to find out more about living in Hollis, please give me a call.  It would be a pleasure to introduce you to this beautiful New Hampshire town.

Saffron Bistro - An Elegant Dining Experience in Nashua, New Hampshire

 Saffron Bistro

If you are looking for an elegant, relaxing dining experience without having to drive to Boston, you will want to experience the Saffron Bistro located in downtown Nashua, New Hampshire.

The Saffron Bistro was opened on June 7, 2007, by two Nashua natives, Benjamin Mercuri and Joe Drift, who is also the chef.  Saffron Bistro delivers American Eclectic cuisine with an emphasis on local organic ingredients and a tantalizing menu that changes every 4-6 weeks.

I have eaten at the Saffron Bistro several times and wanted to treat my husband to dinner for his birthday.

We were warmly welcomed when we arrived and were seated in the main dining room with its serene colors, fine linens and stripped upholstery.   The walls are accented with the art of local artists.

The bar is also very inviting, with a lovely Brazilian hardwood floor, comfortable stools and an imported marble bar counter.  Patrons can enjoy creative and refreshing "martinis" along with more traditional cocktails and drinks.

Our waitress was Jonelle.  She had waited on our table at my husband's birthday dinner last year and she made our evening a delightful experience. She was very attentive without being intrusive.

I told Jonelle that I had been writing about local businesses in Nashua and wanted to write an article about the Saffron Bistro.  She introduced me to co-owner, Benjamin Macuri.  Benjamin was very appreciative and accommodating. There was a large party on its way to dinner so I decided to take pictures before their arrival so as to not interfere.  dining room - piano

The evening began with a delicious appetizer, gratis from the Chef.  It was delicious.  We also ordered an organic Mesculin Salad and Prime Beef Carpaccio. carpaccio

For an entrée, I ordered Caramelized Day Boat Sea Scallops  -- 6 large scallops placed around a bed of risotto filled with Maine Lobster and Asparagus Risotto and topped with colorful pea tendrils.  Orange gastrique circled the edges and the scallops were seared with a caramelized orange sauce.delicious entrees

My husband ordered the Stuffed Frenched Pork Chop.  It was stuffed with spinach, fontina cheese.  Butter Sautéed Fingling Potatoes and Haricot Verts accompanied the pork chop with sauce Robert.

The wine list is small and relatively inexpensive.  Jonell had great recommendations on which wines would best compliment our entrees.

Desserts are made daily, and they change from time to time.  They often include a Passion Fruit Crème Brûlée and a super-rich chocolate version; warm chocolate cake; and a trio of fresh sorbets, including blood orange, passion fruit, and pineapple. "

Saffron Bistro is located at 80 Main Street in Nashua. Closed Sunday and Monday, and open for lunch Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and for dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.  (603) 883-2100 www.thesaffronbistro.com.

Next time you are looking for a great dining experience be sure to stop by the Saffron Bistro in Nashua, New Hampshire. If you are considering buying a home or relocating to the Nashua area, please give me a call.
