Amherst New Hampshire - Experience the Black Forest Café & Bakery.

Black ForestGive your taste buds a treat and stop by the award winning Black Forest Café & Bakery located in Amherst, New Hampshire.

The Black Forest Café & Bakery specializes comfort foods with a creative twist!

Owners, Bruce and Martha Walters adopted a unique philosophy... All foods are hand made from scratch on the premises every day using fresh, local, natural ingredients! fresh ingredients

I spoke with co-owner, Martha Walters who told me that the Black Forest Café and Bakery first opened on November 25, 1988 at Salzberg Square where they remained for 10 years. As their popularity grew, they found they needed more space and moved to the current location just off of Highway 101, where they expanded their operation to include a function room and take-out.

At the Black Forest Café & Bakery, you will experience creative dishes and mouth-watering desserts that you won't find anywhere else! As Martha Walters explained to me, this is the result of the implementation of old-world techniques... and "nothing is mass produced."

With each season, head chef Bruce Walthers along with his staff create new and delicious recipes that will amaze you and delight your taste buds... Martha emphasized that the Black Forest uses local ingredients whenever possible. She said Bruce was the inspiration for the delicious pastries.

Bruce trained at the finest culinary schools in the world - including Le Cordon Bleu in London and Ecole de Cuisine, La Varenne in Paris.

Every year since 2002 the Black Forest has won the Best Cookie award from NH Magazine as well as a recent cheesecake award and "Best Dessert Cafe" of 2007. black forest pastries

I love the food at the Black Forest Café & Bakery. Everything I have tried has been excellent!

The Sunday brunch is my favorite.., I can smell the homemade rolls and fresh breakfast dishes!

When on the go, I often stop in the adjoining "market" to get lunch to take out. The cases are filled with unique wraps, salads, soups, entrees, quiche, and other seasonal creations.

Of course, you can't leave without dessert. Try one of the award wining chocolate chip cookies ... or the seasonal fruit tart or slice of summer berry pie.

Experience the Black Forest Café & Bakery .. " where the proof is in the product, and taste the difference!"

Hope to see you there!

Hollis, New Hampshire ~ A Quaint New England Town

hollis

Welcome to Hollis New Hampshire

Hollis, New Hampshire is a beautiful small, country town accented by rolling hills and small farms. While Hollis has experienced growth over the past decade, it still remains an agricultural producing area attracting people from miles away to sample fresh produce.

Hollis was part of the 1673 land grant call the Dunstable Grant. When it was later divided, then governor Benning Wentworth, named the western part "Holles" after his ancestor, John Holles, Earl of Clare. It was charted in 1746 and it became known as "Hollis," named after Thomas Hollis, a supporter of Harvard College

The town border was established in 1786 when part of Nashua was given to Hollis and part of Hollis was given to Brookline.

As of the 2006 census, the population was estimated at 7,748 people.

You can enjoy a myriad of town traditions and festivals characteristic of small New England towns throughout the year. Summer festivals such as the June strawberry festival are a common in Hollis. A fireworks festival is held at Nichols Field for the July 4th celebration. You can enjoy the apple festival in the fall!

One of my favorite events is the annual Old Homes Days held in September. There are booths and pavilions including old-fashioned games, animal demonstrations and music. You will enjoy the pet parade where pets come in costume.

The center of Hollis is a designated Historical District. You can see many historic homes and buildings.hollis historic district historic District 2 historic district church

I love the Beaver Brook Association conservation area which has over twenty-five miles of hiking and horseback riding trails. Beaver Brook offers educational programs for children and adults on topics such as wildlife and land conservation. Beaver Brook

It is easy to eat local fruits and vegetables in Hollis. Two of the farms I often visit are the Lull Farm and the Brookdale Farm. There are also several times of the year that you can pick your own fruits. Halloween is an fun time of year and kids love to hunt for the perfect pumpkin.

In the summer one can swim, fish, boat and picnic at the beautiful, Silver Lake State Park. Silver Lake Park is a hidden gem... you don't want to miss it.

Hollis has its own preschool and kindergarten, as well providing for grades one through six in the Hollis Primary School and the Hollis Upper Elementary School.

Students in the 7th and 8th grades attend the Hollis/Brookline Middle School. Hollis and Brookline students in the 9th through 12th grade attend the award winning Hollis/Brookline High School.

Real estate in Hollis is beautiful. There is a mix of farms, antique homes, rolling estates, horse property, residential homes and land. horse proprerty

If you would like more information about Hollis or the surrounding towns, please give me a call or email me. It would be my pleasure to show you around this lovely City.

Got Lead? Nashua New Hampshire Receives Grant to Get the Lead Out

The City of Nashua, New Hampshire has started accepting applications to inspect older buildings for lead paint. The grant will also provide for education and abatement for those who meet the guidelines.

Last fall the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded nearly $143 million dollars in grants to many states and local communities, health organizations and scientific research institutions to protect children and their families from the hazards of lead.

Nashua received one of the largest grants in New England ($ 3 Million) and the only city to receive a grant in New Hampshire.

The lead base paint grant is renewable if the City of Nashua can prove that it is meeting certain thresholds. The city is trying to reach 150 units to be treated over the 3 year life of the grant.

The grant is geared to assist moderate and lower income homeowners and tenants who live in older buildings (generally those built prior to 1979). There are income guidelines that apply and they generally follow the section 8 housing guidelines. Income levels are capped at $47,700 for two people (e.g. single parent and child) and $59,600 for a family of four. The actual removal of lead paint is scheduled to take place early in 2009.

To apply, call Sandra Hurd in the Nashua Urban Programs Department 603-589-3089.

Lead is a known toxin that can impair a child's development and can cause irreversible brain damage in children, impair mental functioning and have other adverse heath effects. It also can be harmful to older adults and those with an impaired immune system.

You can read more about lead base paint in this EPA Booklet.

See if your state or city has received a grant by checking out the HUD Website.

New Hampshire - Beware of Political Snow Job

snowDon't get snowed by all of the political rhetoric. The Iowa Caucus is just hours away and the New Hampshire first in the nation primary takes place on January 8th.

In the past few days, not only has New Hampshire had record breaking accumulations of snow for December, but the New Year's day storm brought an avalanche of political advertisements, brochures, door knockers, phone calls and emails.

I was beginning to wonder how to sort the Fact from the Fiction. I came across a couple of web sites I found both informative and entertaining. They certainly helped me discern who was giving the voters a snow job and who was telling the truth!

One site is called FactCheck.org. This is a non partisan site which is operated by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. To the best of my knowledge, they do not take contributions from those who would exert undue influence such as labor unions, lobbying organizations, political parties etc. You can find a lot of great information on this site.

The other site I found is called PolitiFact. PolitifactTM has a wealth of information along with the Truth-o-meter TM which gives you an indication of the truthfulness of a given statement or purported "fact". This site is a joint project of the St. Petersburg Times of Florida and Congressional Quality.

One of the most important freedoms we have in this Country is the Freedom to Vote. Hopefully, these sites will help you to get the facts you need to make an informed voting decision and cut through all the snow!vote Know how each candidate stands on the issues from the budget, climate change, immigration, foreign policy, trade to taxes!

An informed electorate is cornerstone of our great democracy! Become informed and and be sure to vote.
