Nashua to Boston Commuter Rail Picks up Steam!

train

Nashua to Boston Commuter Rail may be closer to becoming a reality!

The federal economic stimulus package, if passed, coupled with appointment of New Hampshire Senator, Judd Gregg, to the Obama administration may get the plans for commuter rail back on track!

New Hampshire is ready for commuter rail!

The engineering has almost been completed. It may be possible to extend the commuter rail north of Nashua to Manchester and Concord!

George Campbell of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation reported that the Nashua to Boston commuter rail project is "shovel ready." A recent article in the Nashua Telegraph reports that Dave Fink, president of Pan Am Systems, which owns the track estimated that the the work could be completed in about a year if everything else is in place! New Hampshire Business for Transportation and Infrastructure annouced its support.

The New Hampshire legislature has taken the first steps to making commuter rail a reality. A rail authority was established in 2007 and a $75 million liability cap was passed. Steve Williams, executive director of the Nashua Regional Planning Commission pointed out that the rail is already in place for freight and only has to be upgraded.

There are still details to be worked out. Peter Griffin, president of the New Hampshire Rail Revitalization Association, has noted that the idea of commuter rail is becoming more widely accepted. However, there are many who believe that the east - west highways should be improved rather than building a rail system. Another significant challenge is finding a mechanism to provide a subsidy to the rail system.

In my opinion the commuter rail is vital piece to the economic development in Southern New Hampshire. It is the centerpiece of the New Urbanism in the Nashua/Manchester corridor ~~ where people can live in and work in communities without the necessity of driving their cars.

Moreover, a commuter rail system will go a long way toward solving the problem of retaining younger workers in New Hampshire and would bring companies and workers from Massachusetts into Southern New Hampshire. Another obvious benefit is that rail will decrease the need to travel by car and will improve the environment.

What is your opinion ~~ Roads or Rails? What would be the best source of funding for the commuter rail system going into the future?

Find out why Nashua is the best place to live in America.

Naughty or Nice?

gift A few years ago, I decided to get away from the snow in Nashua, New Hampshire for the holiday and visit my friends and family in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

For over twenty years, on Christmas evening, we gather at my cousin Sue's home for a holiday dinner and gift giving.

It is an established tradition that one person is designated by uncle Lenn to be "Santa's helper" and pass out a gift to a family member.

As the gift is opened, the other family members look on -- and then another family member will receive a gift ... and so it goes.

On this particular evening, Santa's helper delivered a beautifully wrapped gift to Aunt Judith.

She carefully removed the ribbon and folded the paper neatly so she could reuse it again.

As she lifted the lid to the box, she let out a scream. My first thought was that there was a live mouse in the box! It turned out to be a coffee maker with automatic everything -- radio and timer included.

The problem was two-fold: Aunt Judith hated coffee and she had given the coffee maker to my cousin Ellen as a wedding present a couple of years prior ... Well, it turns out that Ellen received 3 coffee makers and regifted THIS automatic coffee maker to my cousin Paula a year later ...and Paula regifted it to Aunt Judith!

Regifting ~~ Apparently, the word can be attributed to a 1995 "Seinfeld" episode. Although experts tell us that regifting has been around a long time, with the economy being down, it has made a big come back.

A recent survey found that nearly 60 percent of the people polled admitted they had regifted!

Here are some tips for regifting:

  • Don't regift something that has been used
  • Put the gift in a NEW bag or new box
  • Don't leave on part of the tape or old wrapping paper
  • Don't give a partially used gift card
  • Don't give a gift card to a company that has gone out of business
  • Don't give something you have owned for many years
  • Be sure to remove the greeting card that came with the gift!
  • And Don't return the same gift to the person who gave it to you in the first place!

Regifting makes the holidays GREEN! (it is a good way to recycle gifts and save money)

Have you ever regifted? Have you received a "recycled" gift"

Do you think regifting is Naughty or Nice?

Happy Thanksgiving - Put your Turkey on Lay-Away

happy thanksgiving

I have finally finished raking all the leaves and the squirrels are busy gathering acorns for the winter. New Hampshire just missed a snow storm and everyone is getting things ready for Thanksgiving.

It has been a challenging year. However, it is when times are the most difficult that we tend to grow the most. We are strong, resilient and have hope!

Perhaps, this bad economy has some benefits. One benefit is that many people are rediscovering what is important in life! It allows us to focus on all that we have and what is possible to achieve.

The other day I was in a store with one of my grandnieces and there was a sign stating "We have Lay-away!"

My grandniece exclaimed -- "what is lay-away"? --

So, I explained that when there is something you want, but you don't have all the money you need to buy it, you put a down payment on it. Then each week you make a payment until you have paid the full price. Then you can take the items home!

She saw a beautiful sweater she wanted and we opened up the lay-away account! She is SAVING part of her allowance each week so she can make the weekly payment and she is requesting to do more chores so she can earn a little extra cash! ....Hmmm- maybe we don't need all those credit cards after all

So, I wish for everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. May you enjoy friends and family and all the wonderful flavors of the season.

A Tribute and A Prayer

veteran's day

TODAY IS VETERAN'S DAY!

It is a day to remember all of the men and women who now serve our country and make sacrifices so that we can remain free!

Verteran's Day is a day to thank all of the men and woman who have died, become wounded or disabled.

memorial

My broker's son, Tim, is now on his fourth tour of duty in Iraq. For the past 4 years, he has been home for only 3-4 months and has spent Thanksgiving and Christmas in Iraq, far away from his family.

His wife and children have scarified as well. Tim is one of many veterans who has repeatedly volunteered to spend time in Iraq to keep the the peace and to ensure our freedom at home!

To Tim and his family, and all of the families who have given so much, we pray for a speedy return and for peace in the world! We thank you and your families for sacrificing so much.

It cannot be denied that although we can become passionate during the election process, once the election is over, our great country comes together.

One of the hallmarks of our great democracy is the transition of power from the out-going President to the President elect as we witnessed yesterday when President Bush welcomed President elect Obama.

America is not perfect, but it is the greatest democracy in the world and for this we say THANKS today.

If you have not done so, please consider making a contribution to one of the Veteran organizations today!

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR VETERANS AND GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
