Maui financial update report from the Maui news. A new state economic forecast downplays the long-term impact of recent layoffs and bankruptcies.
The report reduces economic expectations for the fiscal year that began July 1 from 2 percent growth to 1 percent but sees better years ahead.
''Some people are panicking, but the numbers aren't that bad,'' said Pearl Imada Iboshi, state economist, noting that economic trends go through cycles. She said recent developments are a shock but do not portend the collapse of the island economy.
Many people have been laid off from jobs in the state this year as gas prices soar and push other costs up throughout the island economy.
Iboshi points to good news in recent weeks, such as the decline in crude oil prices.
''I really believe that over the longer term that people will not give up traveling and vacationing,''

I know everyone has been following the Olympics. They have been amazing from opening ceremony's to Michael Phelps to the women's volleyball. There is a sixteen year old girl who in my mind is a real champion. Shawn Johnson who competes in gymnastics. At home and in the world events this girl just kills it. She was a gold medal favorite going into the Olympics. The thing is she kept making little errors and kept ending up with Silver medals.
So how did she handle not getting the Gold. Her attitude is something we need to look at real close. Under pressure she look for the silver lining in the events. Her attitude was I am here at the Olympics and I am going to enjoy every moment. Also she mention that there was something to be learned from her situation. So she just keep on smiling and not getting down.
She purpose under adversity and in the final event on the balance beam she won a Gold Medal giving it her best performance. She said she would not trade her silver medal because of what she learned about her self. What an awesome human being. I can look at the housing market and sit down and cry or kick and have a fit. This young lady choose the higher road and in the end got the Gold She desired. Above that she showed the world a more Noble side of her that is a real champion.

Looking a head at traveling to Maui Hawaii

This summer has been the slowest as far as tourist coming to Maui. With Aloha Airlines calling it quits and ATA Airlines folding it left a Hugh void. Driving through the airport on the way to windsurf this summer I notice that it's been the slowest since any time I can remember. One thing I do detect is a little change in the air. The dollar is gaining strength against the Euro and the Pound.

That also helps bring down the cost of oil. So that should directly affect the price of jet fuel. Everything is connected, so with cheaper jet fuel airline tickets are coming down to a reasonable price. Already places like the Four-Seasons are booked and the staff is working hard. So I am optimistic that this is going to get people out flying again. Most likely travelers will find some great hotel rates to match cheaper airline tickets. So what do you have to lose? Buy a couple tickets and come to Maui this fall. it is a great time of year during the fall season.

The Olympics have been great to Watch. Micaheal Phelps has been amazing gathering Gold Medals. The women gymnastics and women's volleyball have been kicking some serious but. What is amazing is what the Chinese like to eat. Like in Hawaii you have all kinds of different foods. If you go to a family reunion like I just went to you will have smoked venison, Kahlua pig, chicken long rice and lots of poi. My friend sent me a few pictures of what is on the Chinese menu. I hope you enjoy them.
I love eating bugs for protein
Anyone care for soup.
Goat cooked right in Hawaii is tasty as long as it's not a billy.
Waste not want not my grandma always said.
