A Brief Interview with Tamara, the manager of the Owasso Delta Cafe

This is Tamara. She's the manager of the Owasso Delta Cafe. My wife and I met her tonight while eating dinner at the restaurant. Let me introduce you to a wonderful lady who believes in going the extra mile for the customer.

Tamara told me that she's been working for Delta Cafe, Inc for sixteen years. Yes, that's 16 years. You don't stay in the food service industry that long unless you love what you do and you're good at it. And Tamara is very good at what she does.

I asked her why she decided to work at Delta Cafe all those years ago. She said it was because the company offered her flexible hours that allowed her to be with her children. Thanks to Delta Cafe, she didn't have to put her kids into daycare, which was something she didn't want to do.

Tamara's favorite part of working for Delta Cafe is meeting new people. I'd say she chose the right job for that since this restaurant has quickly become a busy Owasso favorite. The Owasso Delta Cafe opened in March of 2008 and was thrilled as they saw their business take off right from the start. Of course, you could guess this, but just in case you were wondering...weekends are the busy times.

It's always good to know what the manager likes on the menu, so I asked. The answer? Catfish!

One thing you might not know about the Delta Cafe is that you can come in just to grab dessert, if you want to. You've seen their special area by the ice cream fountain, right? Well, that area is for when you need something to satisfy your sweet tooth! And speaking of things you might not know, check this out. You can book the ice cream area for birthday parties! Tamara tells me that they're beginning to be pretty busy with the birthday party booking side of business. Not a bad idea, I'd say! Interested in booking a party? Just call 376-9333.

If you're going to be coming to Owasso and want to stop in for a great meal and super service, make sure you check out our Delta Cafe.

One other thing you might not know about Delta Cafe is that they have gift certificates for kids in your organization or group. Tamara gave us a bunch to use in our church as awards for kids who achieve certain goals. When they get a gift certficate, they can take it to the restaurant and get 10% off their meal.

As I like to say...How cool is that?!

If you haven't made it down the Delta Cafe in Owasso yet, make sure you go soon. You'll enjoy good food, great service and top notch management!

Writing Blogging Spelling and Misspelling

IT'S FUN FRIDAY HERE IN THE RAIN!!!

I found this description of a home for sale in my little part of the world. Now for the fun part...what is wrong with the description??? Do you see anything? Is there anything wrong with it???

Come home to this great home in (name of neighborhood) in (my town). (Name of floorplan) plan. Owner purchased then got transferred. Must see this home with 4beds, 2baths, gameroom, formal dining, 3car garage in (name of neighborhood). Rear covered patio, security system. Great location.

I don't know about you, but I'm finding spelling and grammar mistakes creeping into real estate writing in huge numbers. And the funny thing is that I'm not even any good at spelling and grammar. Okay, maybe I'm okay at it, but in school I wasn't a straight A student in my English classes! It is unfortunate that our computer program spell checker doesn't know the difference between things like

know and no
got and was
there and their
your and you're
to and too (speaking of which, too means also...I think!)
right and wright

And there are many others as well (or is that to, or too, or also???)

I found this fun and helpful website called www.yourdictionary.com. It has a list of the 100 most misspelled words. Here's an example...

  • a lot
    • Two words! Hopefully, you won't have to allot a lot of time to this problem.
  • It's a fun website to visit and a great one to point your kids towards - or your clients kids.

In the meantime, remember that the image we present out there is critical to our success. Proper spelling and grammar help you look like you know what you're talking about, which isn't a bad thing! Do you have to be a straight A spelling student when writing emails or blogging? NO, but for Pete's sake use your spell check and have someone else proof what you write BEFORE sending your email or posting your blog. Even better, write it, spell check it, save it and come back and read it later before positing it. OR go ahead and post it and then go read it. It's amazing what mistakes you'll catch!

I oughta know. I lost count of how many blogs I've had to go back in and edit to fix mistakes long ago!

Introducing the NEW Owasso Magazine (and its editor!)

Owasso is a growing community. We're the kind of town where we were all excited when Wal-Mart decided to build a supercenter here. That was several years ago and since then, we've added a Home Depot and a Lowes and lots of new restaurants.

One of the newest features to come to our town is the brand new "Owasso" Magazine. This publication is the vision of its founder, creator and editor Anna Holton-Dean. The first edition just hit the streets and the response around town is...wow!

Here's a pic of the first cover.

    First Cover

I sat down with Anna today to get to know her a little bit better and to find out about the magazine. Here's a couple of facts about her that I thought were interesting...

She was born in Lake Charles, LA (anybody remember which hurricane hit there?)

She and her husband moved to Owasso in May of 2007 to take a job. On top of moving she also...

got married, graduated from grad school and lost her grandmother all in the same month. Needless to say, May 2007 stands out in her mind as one of those life changing moments when her life seriously changed.

I asked her why she decided to publish the new Owasso magazine. She told me that she had been thinking about publishing a magazine of some sort for quite a while. Most of this thinking happened when she was working as an editor for the Oklahoma magazine and other publications. Her husband was supportive and when they arrived in Owasso, she saw immediate potential. "There wasn't anything like it in Owasso," she said. So with a little bit of faith (or is that a lot???), their own money, a Macintosh computer and a ton of invested time, off she went.

When you pick up a copy, I think you'll agree that it was a good investment!

Currently, the magazine is free, but subscriptions are available. It will be published monthly beginning in October.

This first edtition focused on back to school with stories about the Owasso football program. However, each month will include stories on each of the following:

A special feature (like a person of interest)
    A local church
    A local business
    A city official
    An Owasso "when" photo
    A dining directory

Anna wrote the copy for the entire magazine and edited it herself. In addition, she oversaw the pics, put together the intial advertising and worked with a graphic designer to create the beatiful Owasso logo for the cover.

    Owasso magazine logo

She has a website up at www.owassomagazine.com. There will be content added to her website soon, so be patient as it is still under construction.

If you'd like to contact Anna to submit story ideas or to advertise, she can be emailed at publisher@owassomagazine.com

I'll post up a pic of Anna as soon as I get one that she "approves"

Why They Don't Build Basements In Oklahoma

I used to live up North. I understand how valuable and useful basement space is. However, here in Oklahoma, basements are NOT something you want to dig into. Instead of going down, we go UP with bonus rooms and second floors.

Check out these pics from an actual basement here in our area. The home is in foreclosure and the story is that the people just left the basement flooded when they found out they were going to lose the house. I don't know if the story is true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me. From what I understand, this basement has flooded more than once!

Notice the lovely mold spots. They kind of add a certain "ambiance" to the room! How High the Water Was

I'll bet there's been some yucky stuff down that hole in the floor!Nice and clean now!

Yep, that's mold on the wall. You can make your own penicllin!"Hey mom...I think there's water in the basement again!"

Do you think this should be disclosed? The answer is YES!View from the bottom of the stairs

Oklahoma has had flooding problems for years. We are located in the great plains of America. That means our ground is very flat. When it rains the water runs to the lowest point and it doesn't really care if that lowest point is your basement or a creek. Thankfully, Tulsa spent the money and had the vision to put in one of the nation's leading flood control systems citywide. We no longer flood in Tulsa by and large...only in basements!
