When you're thinking of a great place to live, think Owasso, Oklahoma! Owasso means end of the trail!
Welcome to Andolini's Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant in Owasso Oklahoma.
If you haven't been to Andolini's in Owasso, Oklahoma, you don't know what you're missing! Andolini's the only authentic New Jersey style handmade pizza restaurant in Owasso. And it's one of those places where the story of how the restaurant came into being is almost as good as the food, which by the way, is all made from scratch.
I sat down the other day with Mike Bausch, owner and founder of Andolini's to find out why he decided to open a pizza restaurant in Owasso. Now the back story here that you should know is that I had heard the story from Mike's dad, the Colonel. I had met the elder Mr. Bausch when I was working with him and his wife to sell a house here in our town. Sure enough, as I listened to Mike tell the story again, it was as rich and full as the version his dad told.
Mike's knowledge of pizza dates back to his childhood, growing up in New Jersey. He told me that New Jersey is more of a suburb of New York than New York is. It has a rich, authentic pizza culture of all different styles of New York and New Jersey pizza. He and his brother James grew up in that culture going to pizza restaurants and enjoying what they didn't realize at the time, was something pretty special.
That something special...that pizza they would remember from their childhood would come back into their lives one day in a way they would never imagine. They would own their own Pizza Restaurant in Owasso. And how did that happen? Well, it all started when his brother got transferred to Owasso. James had been working for the Alamo Rental car company which had been bought out by Enterprise. The new company, now called Van Guard, decided to relocate from Florida to Oklahoma.
Mike was in California at the time. He had graduated from college in 2004 and then signed up to serve in the military. He wanted to be a JAG Lawyer. However, he was diagnosed with diabetes and you know what that means. He would not be able to continue in the Marines due to his medical condition. Not to be deterred, he continued to pursue his interest in a law practice. He had been accepted to three law schools in California. This was the summer of 2004 when his brother James was moving to Owasso.
It didn't take very long till James called Mike up and said, "You gotta check this place out!" What he was talking about was a growing community with very few restaurants. James saw an opportunity to do something special because there were no authentic pizza restaurantsin Owasso. So Mike came to Owasso, took a look around and decided he had to consider the business opportunity. It was just too good to pass up. And the decision was made. They would open a handmade authentic New Jersey/New York style pizza restaurantin Owasso, Oklahoma. He and James began experimenting by playing around with pizza recipes from some of the restaurantsthey had worked in back in New Jersey. After lots of attempts, they finally found a recipe that just blew them away. The dough, the cheese and the sauce were all exactly right and they knew it. They had found what they were looking for...something irresistible.
The restaurant opened on January 8, 2005. Did they know what they were getting into? Not really. Mike confessed that their pizza restaurant should not have been successful. They were bright eyed and bushy tailed and had no idea how to run a small business. They had a huge learning curve the first year, but to them failure simply was not an option. They worked hard, learned tough lessons, persevered and succeeded. And they can certainly be proud. Over 30 other restaurants have come and gone in Owasso over the last four years. Not Andolini's. They are here to stay.
I asked Mike what the most popular menu item is. He said it is pizza by the slice at lunchtime. The most popular pizza they serve is the Spring Street Pizza. I personally love the Tenbysimo. You'll love that one if you're a meat lover!
I also asked Mike what the strangest thing anyone has ever ordered. He thought for a minute and then said, "Heated Dr. Pepper."
Andolini's is open every day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. They offer delivery service and also provide small and corporate catering for your special event. Wedding rehearsal dinners are becoming very popular at the restaurant.
There is a part two to this story and it has to do with Mike getting invited to a world class pizza competition with some of the finest pizza makers from around the world. I'll tell you that story later and include a link as well.
For now, suffice it to say that if you're looking for some incredible pizza, you need to head to Andolini's pizza restaurant in Owasso. You'll love the service, the atmosphere and especially the food!
You can find Andolini's at 12140 E 96th St N # 106, Owasso. The phone number for the restaurant is (918) 272-9328.

A Visit to My Childhood Home in the Memorial Estates neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Recently, our friend Jason Crouch at Active Rain ran a contest inviting folks to write about their childhood home. I decided it sounded like a fun project, so I dove in and wrote about my home in the Memorial Estates neighborhood in Tulsa. This neighborhood was a hopping place when I was a kid in the early 70's. The school was a cutting edge building, the houses was pretty new and the trees were still on the small side.
After writing my blog, I decided to go back and visit the old Memorial Estates neighborhood. I hadn't been there in sometime and I missed the place. So I went back and took some pictures of the places I wrote about and described.
Here's the neighborhood today...
First, we begin with my childhood home. You can see the gas yard light is still there.
Here's a view of 38th street where we kids would ride our bikes and spend hours playing. It's also the street where the guy would drive his VW bug pulling the kids in the winter time. This was a main "cut through" through the Memorial Estates subdivision, but it was a safe place to ride a bike and be a kid.

It's hard to see the building, but this is Robert Fulton Elementary school. It's a teacher's academy today. This school served the entire Memorial Estates neighborhood. Today the kids attend Skelly elementary.

Ah, summertime in Tulsa! Like the picture says...we would ride our bikes here to go swimming. We loved this place! This was one of two Memorial Estates neighborhood pools. The other one, called Longview Estates is now gone. It may be that the neighborhood was actually called Longview Estates too and I just don't know it! (The research I did indicated it was Memorial Estates).

This is Ronnie's house today. You can see the cul-de-sac we pulled into where the water wasn't running so high. Ronnie actually lived closer to Skelly elementary (which was a Junior High school at the time).

And here's the street where we tried to get out of the neighborhood. I've tried to show you about how high the water was. When we came out of the cul-de-sac, his mom tried to turn left (heading towards where I stood to take the picture). Instead, we ended up going the other way, down the street. Ronnie and I ended up in one of the houses down on the left. I'm not sure now which one it was.

And last but not least, the infamous creek. I promise you...it didn't look a thing like this back in the early 70's. It was a winding creek with dirt banks and lots of shady trees...a perfect place for a couple of boys in the summer time to have adventures galore!

Now that you've seen the pictures, you might want to read the original story. If so, click the link below.
Memories of My Childhood Home in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
You'll read about Ronnie and the Grundies and the Pettys and some of the adventures that kids in the early 70's were able to experience and enjoy growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
As for me, I now feel the need to try to find some original pictures of the places you've seen today. It's off to find that old shoebox of photos. Give me some time and I'll see if I can't take you back to how the old place looked back in a younger and for me, much more innocent time.

Blackberry or IPhone or both?
Recently I wrote a blog about buying a new Iphone 3G versus a Blackberry 8900. I really wanted to go witht Iphone. I mean, they are so very cool, right? But I had been using a Blackberry Pearl and had been pretty happy with it.
So off I went to the store to check out getting into a new Iphone 3G. Hello. Can you say over $170 per month for unlimited everything. OUCH. I want one, but not THAT bad. So I ended up going with the new Blackberry Curve 8900. It costs me under $100 per month for unlimited everything. Big savings.
So I like my new Blackberry, but I'm kind of bummed over the Iphone costs, right? Well, I have found great solution. It's call the IBerry Theme for the Blackberry. Yep, you guessed it, the IBerry Theme mimicks the Iphone theme. How cool is that!
Here's a screen shot from my Blackberry Curve with the theme installed and running.
As I understand it, the IBerry Theme was developed by someone named Artem Cheban. I found it online by searching for Blackberry Curve 8900 themes.
Now, of course, the Blackberry Curve 8900is not a touch screen like the IPhone is, but if you are a Blackberry user, you already know that. I believe there is a version of this theme for the Blackberry Storm also.
I found the theme online for less than $5.00. With a discount, I paid about $2.00. Once I installed it, it worked perfectly.

I like that you can move the icons around and also that you can set any icons you want in the home panel (the bottom screen). I keep my "My Faves", my Antair Spam Filter, my Notepad, my Blackberry World Icon and the Profiles Icon so I can switch the phone quickly from silent to vibrate or other modes.
The picture on the right is a screen shot of what the screen looks like when you push the "Blackberry" button to the left of the trackball. You can see all of your icons and move through them on this screen.
All in all, I'd say this application will make many of us Blackberry users pretty happy. Although it isn't an Iphone, it still gives us a great interface with an Iphone feel. And the really cool thing is that it makes your Blackberry stand out from the crowd!
