Tom & Ray's Restaurant in Damascus, Maryland

Tom & Ray's Restaurant in Damascus, Maryland

Homestyle cooking, just the way your mother made it in a warm and friendly atmosphere. This is what Tom & Ray's does best. Inexpensive and fun, Tom & Ray's, located in downtown Damascus, has the feel of a community meeting place. It really doesn't matter whether you order their homemade apple pie (if you are on a diet , you can get this sugar-free) or a hot turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy, you are in for a treat. I hope you leave room for the carrot cake or the hot fudge brownie. Even the homemade chocolate cake will delight you and please your palate. If you just want a plain burger or cheeseburger, they do a great job with this as well. You are made to feel like an honored guest. Ladies, please check out the wonderful ladies lounge, complete with girly wallpaper featuring different types of high heel shoes. Even the hooks for your coats that are conveniently located along one wall feel welcoming, and the wait staff actually seem to enjoy their jobs. Advertisements for different types of community activities are encouraged and shared in the big picture window. This is when I knew that I had moved to a small town. They don't have places like this in the big city. Enjoy!

Morgan's American Grill in New Market, Maryland

Morgan's American Grill in New Market, Maryland

Morgan's American Grill, located in New Market, has just about everything one could ask for in a moderately priced restaurant. The décor is a bit edgy, with dark colors and dramatic art on the walls. The ceilings are black, and there is a separate party room as well. All of this gives the place a very modern feel. The fireplace, and the tables around it, are very popular in the winter. Now for the food: It is hearty and well prepared. If you are not hungry for a complete meal, you can order the quesadillas or the pork sliders. In any case, the hot bread is really fresh and comes with generous amounts of real butter. Desserts are unbelievable, with several kinds of cheesecake, crème brulee, and a walnut concoction that is so good, I may just have to bribe someone to get the recipe. I found the wait staff to be very helpful , with a thorough knowledge of the menu and a ready list of suggestions to please any palate. Presentation is something I admire, and I was impressed with the chef's expertise, especially in terms of the desserts. Wow!

Concetta's Deli in Mt. Airy, Maryland

Concetta's Deli in Mt. Airy, Maryland

Among my more satisfying finds in Mt. Airy is Concetta's Italian Deli. Everything is made fresh daily, even the bread and they use local produce and meats as much as possible. The results are incredible. They make a meatball sub that is to die for. Anytime I am in the vicinity, I can't resist getting one. They roast the meatballs in the oven and then make this delectable tomato sauce. You might want to try one of their authentic Italian drinks such as the fizzy orange or lemon, made with real fruit juice. Their desserts are also very tempting. Try the cannoli or homemade cookies. Concetta's is located on Main Street in Mt. Airy. One can eat in or carry out. The décor is simple but cheerful; tomato cans filled with bright flowers adorn the tables, along with authentic Italian condiments. The service is great: friendly a and cheerful.
