Inklings Bookshop & The White Hart Cafe Lynchburg Va

08-10-09
Pat Preston

picInklings Bookshop was established in 1995 in downtown Lynchburg, with a vision to promote "the good, the true, and the beautiful," with a special concern for fostering good reading from a Christian world-view.

The bookshop offers a wide variety of new, used, and rare books, with an emphasis on religion, philosophy, literature, children's books and classical education. There are also strong sections of local and Civil War history, plus a wide variety of books in many areas of interest. They are happy to order for you any book that is in print, and can assist you in out-of-print searches as well.

The Inklings is the name given to a group of men, friends of C. S. Lewis, who met together in Oxford, England to read and discuss one another's literary creations. These meetings usually occurred either in Lewis' residence in Magdalen College or in the Oxford pub called the "Eagle and Child," or affectionately, "The Bird and Baby."

Many of these men were scholars from the Oxford colleges, and some were students of Lewis. One female author, Dorothy Sayers, is also sometimes included as a kindred spirit, though she never attended the meetings. Since the opening of the White Hart Cafe most of their stock is now at the cafe.

picThe White Hart where they combine the sale of books with a café, coffee shop, and live music venue. offers organically grown and fair-traded coffee with a menu featuring locally grown, organic food products. They feature pastries made in their own kitchen every day. Whenever practical, their ingredients are purchased from local farmers.

The White Hart is a name frequently used in England for some of that nation's oldest pubs. The image of the white hart or white stag is found in the Arthurian legends, as well as legends from Celtic and other cultures. In some cultures the animal may appear as a reindeer or a unicorn.

The appearance of a white male deer is symbolic of the presence of the numinous or divine. The legends of the conversions of St.Eustace and St. Hubert include an appearance of a white hart displaying an image of a cross between its antlers.

Below are some of the interior pics. They are located at 1206 & 1208 Main St Lynchburg Va. Cafe is open Mon-Sat 8 am-10 pm

Daily specials compliment the menu ranging from liver and onions through duck, lamb and pork with fresh interesting soups always available. The well-rounded menu of superbly cooked dishes is a treat for a family night out or impressing business clients. The railroad antiques and the charm of the old N&W Depot building make the perfect setting for a smoke free dining experience

The N&W Room

A small private dining room within the Depot Grille decorated with railroad prints The space is available for lunch and dinner-It is ideal for a lunch or dinner meeting which require privacy or intimacy.

The large open dining area flooded with natural light is the ideal environment for a casual business lunch. The regular passing of trains just outside provides a wonderful treat for the kids.

The booths are actually church pews from Grace Evangelical and Congregational Church in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The church was established in 1906 and has since been made into an antique store.

Their kitchen can be seen through the back windows of the dining room. Built in the 1960s, these two Georgia Northern Railroad freight cars were fully functional until their transformation.

They were purchased in Marietta, Georgia where one had to have its brakes replaced specifically for the move to Lynchburg. After being lifted by cranes from the railroad tracks to the back of the building, they were converted to The Depot Grille's kitchen.

pic

The back bar is from a pharmacy in Edinburg, Virginia. A local legend persists that a stray bullet shattered the original mirror during an attempted bank robbery by none other than Frank and Jesse James who decided to rob the bank next door to the pharmacy on their way back to Missouri after the Civil War.

picModel trains on display at the Depot-Many of the guests comment on the beautiful hand built model trains on display there. Mr. Fred Reburn has built twenty two models since 1985 and has kindly agreed to display his collection - Fred, who retired from the N&W after thirty two years, crafts each model from various wood over many hours. His choice of wood is interesting as Fred had a near fatal accident on Percival's Island when he was impaled by a tree while riding on the footplate of a locomotive in 1979.

Bob Evans HISTORY-A great place to eat-BREAKFAST IS AVAILABLE ALL DAY!!!

08-04-09
Pat Preston

PIC

Bob Evans Farms got its start when founder, Bob Evans, began making sausage on his southeastern Ohio farm to serve at a 12-stool diner he owned in nearby Gallipolis in 1948.

They served a lot of breakfasts, but they couldn't get any decent sausage," Bob recalled. "So he decided to start making my own from hogs raised right on their farm, using all the best parts of the hog, including the hams and tenderloins." The restaurant drew many truck drivers who traveled through the region. "You might say the truck drivers did my research for me," Bob said. "They would tell me that this was the best sausage they ever had, and then buy 10-pound tubs to take home."

picThese good reports prompted Bob Evans to go into the sausage business. The building where he made the sausage was built with open ends, at the suggestion of his father, so it could be used as a machinery shed if the sausage business failed. But, it didn't fail. In 1953, a group of friends and family recognized the growing demand for Bob's sausage and became business partners by establishing Bob Evans Farms.

As the reputation of Bob Evans Sausage grew, Bob Evans invited people to his farm in Rio Grande, Ohio. "There were so many people coming to the farm that we finally built a little restaurant in 1962 just to take care of them. It started out with only a dozen stools -- just a convenience place," Bob recalled.

The original Bob Evans Restaurant on the farm was called The Sausage Shop. Although it started with 12 stools, today the restaurant can seat 134. The farm has evolved into a tourist attraction with camping and hiking and events throughout the year. The largest event is our Bob Evans Farm Festival, being held the second full weekend, Friday through Sunday, in October.

Bob Evans lived on the farm for nearly 20 years. He and his wife, Jewell, raised their six children in the large, brick farmhouse known as the Homestead. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Homestead was once a stagecoach stop and an inn.

picToday you can visit the original Bob Evans Restaurant and experience the traditions of an all-American farming community. Hay, corn, sorghum, wheat and tobacco are grown on this nearly 1,000-acre working farm.

Visitors to the Homestead Museum may:

  • sit at the reconstructed counter of the original Steak House owned by Bob Evans,
  • see life-size models of Bob and Jewell Evans, filming their television commercials in their original kitchen,
  • view these commercials on an old television console or through the lens of an actual television camera of the era and
  • follow the displays as the 53-year history of the business unfolds, with its dreams and goals, personalities, challenges, growth and success.

In 1987, Bob Evans Farms added to the family through the acquisition of Owens Foods, then Owens Country Sausage, based Texas and again in 2004 with the acquisition of Mimi's Cafe based in California.

picAt Bob Evans Restaurants, quality homestyle food and friendly service are our trademarks. From classic breakfast favorites like sausage, omelettes and hotcakes, to our tasty dinner classics such as slow-roasted turkey and our Knife & Fork Sandwiches, Bob Evans has something for everyone.

The company currently owns and operates nearly 600 full-service, family Bob Evans Restaurants in the 18-state area of: Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

They serve breakfast all day. My favorite breakfast is: Banana Nut Bread with Fruit Dish. Delicious and low cal.

pic

They also have these different breakfasts:Farm-Fresh Egg Breakfasts which include: Farmer's Choice Breakfast

pic

Fit from the Farm Breakfasts which include:Bob Evans Egg Lites Cholesterol egg blend, and one turkey sausage link are served with your choice of one of the following:

  • One fruit & yogurt crepe

They have lunch and dinner specials as well so if you are hungry for good home cooking look no further than Bob Evans Restaurant. Check out their website to see if they have one near you http://www.bobevans.com/Default.aspx
