The Pest house at the old Cemetery Lynchburg Va.

Lynchburg's first hospital

picThe Pest House, or House of Pestilence, was Lynchburg's first hospital. It was located at the outermost edge of town, on land next to the Public Burying Ground (or City Cemetery).

picThe small, white-frame "Pest House Medical Museum" building-now located in the Old City Cemetery was moved to the Cemetery in 1987 from Dr. John J. Terrell's farm in Campbell County, Rock Castle. The structure was originally built in the 1840s and served as Dr. Terrell's medical office after the Civil War.

Throughout the 1840s and 1850s those infected with contagious diseases like smallpox, cholera, and scarlet fever, were quarantined in the Pest House which was originally located near Third and Wise Streets, within what is now the Old City Cemetery. The medical care and standards of cleanliness we know today were virtually non-existent, and most patients died. The dead were buried only a few yards away. By 1862 Lynchburg had become a major Civil War hospital center, and the Pest House was used as the quarantine hospital for Confederate soldiers.

pic

Thirty-three year old Dr. Terrell discovered the wretched conditions in the Pest House and volunteered to assume responsibility for the soldiers. He put his painter and carpenter to work, using lime and yellow paint on outside and black on inside to save his patients' eyes. To overcome the offensive odor he had dry white sand put on the floor. He had a barrel of linseed oil and limewater to use as an ointment, with which he greased sores, so they had no more sticking of clothing. The reforms enacted by Dr. Terrell reduced the Pest House mortality rate from 50 percent to five percent.

picDr John Terrell lived in Rock Castle Farm for 40 yrs He did a "heavy country" practice around Lynchburg. The beloved Quaker physician died in 1922 at age 93 leaving heroic medical legacy to the community. Many patients came to Dr. Terrell's office, and he traveled on horseback to others in their homes throughout the counties. Dr. Terrell's operating table(pic on left), "poison chest,"(pic on right)pic "asthma chair," and some of his instruments are part of the simple, colorful country furnishings.

picAmong the collection of medical instruments, the surgical amputation kit is pre-1885. also a 1860s hypodermic needle, clinical thermometer, and chloroform mask, which Dr. Terrell was the first in the area to use.

picA monument to the memory of the 102 soldiers who died of smallpox during the Civil War is near the entrance to the adjacent Confederate Section of the Cemetery.

Outside the museum there was a button you pushed that gave you the history of the pest house. Also there is two plaques outside the front of the museum. It was really neat and I took pics of the inside but since I had to look thru the window I managed to get just a reflection of myself instead of what was inside. They had a room that was used as his Dr Terrell's office. It had a sand floor with sheet type beds on the floor and in addition they had a primitive bucket There also was the asthma chair, bookshelves and a potty chair that was in the room in the front part of the museum. I plan to get the interior pics later in the fall when I visit as some of the trees will be in blossom then.

These were the plaques outside the front doors and the pic on the (left bottom) is out back of the museum as the doctor used medicinal herbs when he practiced medicine. The bottom right pic is the museum front view

A little history of the Old City Cemetery Lynchburg Va

picA little History of the Old City Cemetery Lynchburg Va

The 26-acre site is an arboretum of 19th-century trees, shrubs, and flowers. Of particular fame are the hundreds of antique roses which reach their peak of bloom in mid-May. The Old City Cemetery, established in 1806, is one of the oldest public cemeteries in the United States that has been in continuous use since its founding.

More than 20,000 people are buried here—most before 1925—including political, religious, social, and cultural leaders, the city’s indigent and “strangers,” veterans of every major American war and conflict, and over 2,200 Confederate soldiers from 14 states. Three quarters of those buried here are African and Native American, both free and enslaved. More than one-third are infants and young children.

The Southern Memorial Association, a non-profit organization originally formed in 1866 to care for the graves in the Confederate Section, has led a citizen effort since 1993 to rehabilitate the often neglected Cemetery. The City of Lynchburg’s Department of Public Works now has a unique partnership with the Southern Memorial Association to provide routine maintenance and horticultural care for the sacred grounds. The management of the Chapel is the responsibility of the non-profit Southern Memorial Association. SMA staff will be glad to answer questions and assist with planning details for your event.

picSituated on a bluff in Lynchburg's historic Old City Cemetery amidst ancient graves, small museums, antique roses and flowering shrubs, and overlooking a natural dell and pond, the Chapel is unique and beautiful. It provides a charming setting for weddings, recitals, lectures, memorial services and other special occasions.

Built to commemorate the 200-year anniversary of the founding of Lynchburg's Old City Cemetery in 1806, the non-denominational Chapel is both functional and inviting. Completely handicapped accessible and climate controlled, the building’s ambience transports the visitor to a different era of a simpler, more humble life with the warmth of old building materials and the charm of architectural details of early craftsmen.

pic

Also held at the chapel are weddings, meetings, recitals, lectures, and memorial services are all occasions easily accommodated in the charming little Chapel at the Old City Cemetery. Small groups of 50 adults (perhaps 60 if children are included) can be seated in the 100-year-old handmade pews.

The Columbarium is located beneath the chapel at the Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg, VA. It provides 288 niches for permanent storage of cremains in a tasteful, secure room. Twelve crypts installed beneath the brick floor of the columbarium allow for the burial of caskets or cremains in a very special setting. Both niches and crypts are available to the general public. The chapel meets the changing needs of the community and keeps the Cemetery open to citizens of all segments of society.

pic

On the walls are sealed niches containing the cremains of Lynchburg citizens. Beneath the brick floor are crypts for in-ground burials. On the opposite wall is a lovely, peaceful terracotta image. It was cast in 1875 and salvaged from an old public building in Kentucky. It is over 130 years old. We call it “Peace.” Flanking it are two antique Scottish chimney caps holding arrangements of greens. The floor is laid of old patterned bricks salvaged from sidewalks in the older parts of downtown Lynchburg.

There is so much more to share at this unique cemetery that is rich in history. This is a small sample of what is here. So I will be sharing more on blogs to come.

picEstate Specialists Inc. was established in 1978 as a tag sale conductor and estate liquidator. In 1987, their first retail store was opened in Historic/Downtown, Riverfront Lynchburg, Virginia, in a small church building which had been greatly remodeled and had served for many years as the C&P Telephone Company office. Their many years of experience have enabled them to conduct well-handled and efficiently managed estate liquidations by conducting tag sales from the home.

In 1991, Estate Specialists was moved to a slightly larger building in the center of town and in 1994, moved into a large, 10,000 square foot building and became a true estate retail business in which everything from fine antiques to lawnmowers were sold. In 1997, a second store was opened to accommodate the growing inventory of local estate purchases. This move was into an historic building erected in 1902 and located in the downtown area near the city's Community Market at 1300 Main Street

Their sales allow your home to be converted into a retail venue for the weekend. All items to be sold are arranged, tagged, and displayed for the most effective presentation to the buying public. The sales are advertised in the appropriate newspapers, on their website, and of course, in their retail stores. The owner or executor is provided with an itemized list prior to the sale and the same list is used to show the final sales totals at the conclusion of the sale. Most unsold items are then purchased as inventory for their stores.

pic

As Estate Specialists business continued to grow, the decision was made to leave the center city location and relocate downtown to an old tobacco warehouse located only half of a block away from their Main Street store. The rear of this store affords great views of the James River and both the Carter Glass and John Lynch Memorial bridges.

Each estate settlement needs individual attention. Whether you are dissolving a large estate with many rooms of furniture, disposing of accessories and household items, or simply disposing of remaining items after distribution to relatives and heirs, Estate Specialists is a company that can ably assist you.

pic

A complete inventory of items to be sold is made and a formal offer is prepared and presented for your consideration. Their offer can include a complete purchase and removal of the contents, disposal of any unusable items, and broom sweeping of the premises. With a team of experienced employees, they can work efficiently with your estate whether large or small.

Today, Estate Specialists Inc. is the largest single-owner company selling antique and estate items on the east coast, employing nine full time and five part-time employees. An expansion of the organization and facilities was done in 2008 to accommodate both the growth trends seen in the industry sector as well as in the local market

Betty J. Davidson, owner and professional appraiser, has many years of experience and training to determine a fair evaluation of the contents of your property.

A native of Covington, Virginia and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia, Betty J. Davidson is a very people-centered and family-oriented individual. She not only enjoys her role as wife, mother, and grandmother; but also thrives on the daily excitement of her own estate liquidation business.

A graduate of E.C. Glass High School and Phillips Business College, she believes strongly in continuing education, and as such, has also completed many higher education classes in human relations. She is a staunch supporter of the Mission Statement formulated by her high school alma mater, E.C. Glass.

Some of the other items they have in the store are below. Each location has something different and is in walking distance of one another. So if you are in Lynchburg be sure to check out Estate Specialists Inc.

Wyndhurst prides itself on being a close-knit community

07-27-09
Pat Preston

Wyndhurst prides itself on being a close-knit community. Wyndhurst offers not only plenty of unique shopping venues like but also friendly, convenient neighborhoods.

pic

Nestled in Historic Lynchburg, Wyndhurst is a new community with an old-fashioned feel. Wyndhurst was designed around the idea of a time when life was simpler, when people knew their neighbors. Here, their vision of community comes to life, with well-built neighborhoods, unique, eclectic shops and restaurants and an emphasis on health.

Unlike so many new developments these days, Wyndhurst is designed around people instead of the automobile. Shopping, eating, exercising, and community options are all within walking distance. As a traditional development, Wyndhurst is designed to function like an older neighborhood, where friendships are easy to develop, and life feels simpler and uncluttered.

Wyndhurst is a version of a classic American small town, with its own neighborhoods, its own parks and its own town center. Almost everything will be within walking distance, and that's just what you'll see in Wyndhurst, people walking to the store, the park, church, the gym. It's simple: the more people walk around, the more they get to know each other. When people have front porches instead of back porches, they talk more. Neighbors become friends. And when things are close by, people have more time for themselves and their families

Within the community of Wyndhurst is a retirement community called the Summit. A unique continuing-care retirement community, featuring garden homes and apartments that offer service and support to residents seeking an independent lifestyle
